Here here!!

Here's to this thread surviving the first few weeks. Hopefully we will gain new members and exchange stories and experiences.

But a quick question: Can you add a little sub-forum or something for musicians? Or should I just start a thread somewhere??

...And the trees are all kept equal, by hatchet, axe and saw. .. .

I'm curious as to why you delete threads that are only a week old from activity. Just because a conversation might reach a natural end wouldn't necessarily mean the thread lacks merit, and might be of interest to newcomers.

Also, what's to stop someone who's new from posting a thread that was just discussed/debated/used to beat a dead pony a couple weeks ago and get jumped on by the current members for bringing it up?

I'm just wondering because it's an odd policy. I've moderated in numerous places, including some that can have a tendency to "eat their own" so to speak, such as LJ's Childfree and Fanficrants, and it's typically encouraged in most places, including other guilds I've seen here on Gaia, to read back a while to 1) get a feel of the place and 2) make sure what you're posting hasn't already been recently done to death.

It's just an odd policy that I've never come across and I'm wondering on the rationale for it and what measures you might have in place to prevent the issues from coming up on a regular basis due to threads being deleted and people -- not even necessarily n00bs but regular members who might not have been able to come around in a week or so -- from bringing up a topic that's already been done to death. Repetition of posts/issues and stagnation are common culprits in guilds/communities/forums becoming ill or dying.

To answer your question about the deletion of threads, it's more an issue of members starting threads in the main forum when there is another subforum already in place where they should have posted their comment or question. I can see your point however, about the same issue being brought up my a new member, which has previously been discussed in an earlier thread. I will review my policy and probably just ask people to move their topic to the appropriate subforum in the future. Thanks for your input and concern.

If that's actually the case, wouldn't it be easier and more efficient to simply move the misposted threads to the correct subforum? As far as I can tell in the guilds I run, that's well within the control levels.

Yes and in cases where the post can be moved to an existing subforum, I do just that. But in some cases, there is a post in this forum, which needs to be moved into an existing thread in this forum and the system does not allow you to move one thread into another in the same forum. In those cases, if I think it's important enough to keep the post, I will ask the person responsible for it, to start it over in the appropriate thread. I will take a closer look at threads in this forum in the future before just deleting them. If it's something of importance for new members to read, I will move it to the best place for it. What I am trying to do is keep the main forum down to one page of threads, sticky's and announcements. We have enough subforums to provide places for people to chat about random things or start threads about some particular issue or thought.

I solemnly swear to follow the rules!

If you ever need any help with anything at all I'd be more than happy to lend a hand. Despite how long it says I've been a member, this is a new account and I first joined Gaia in 04. <3 I also have a lot of experience in owning and molding guilds, I am at your beck and call.
