Seriously, what happened to the more boyish girls in shoujo-ai and yuri?
It seems that most yuri portrays solidly or extremely feminine girls, ignoring the fact that girls and gay girls display a great deal more variability in gender presentation than just that. I mean, femme x femme is great and all, but having everything that way seems to be a little overboard.
Why do you think this is? Do you tend to like it this way? Do you wish there was a little more variation, and if so/not, how might this tie in with how realistic you like your yuri relationships to be?
One other thing I thought was interesting was that a lot of fan and subtext-based pairings tend to involve more boyish girls (whether one or both in the pairing).
For instance, think Tatsuki and Orihime from Bleach as a very popular and noticeably more femme/butch fan pairing. Yoruichi and Soi Fong from the same series are also both less hyper-femme than the standard depictions in yuri, and are likewise an extremely popular pairing (also from Bleach).

Its a matter of preference I guess, I mean in my opinion, I am not against penetration, and boyish girls are just...well, if I liked the look of males I wouldn't be a lesbian. It's like looking at a man sans p***s. I myself like girls because they look like girls.

I think it would be nice to variation in personalities. (as long as they don't act too masculine) Not every girl is a girly girl, I'm certainly not. biggrin

its is true that they are few and far between the only ones that comes to my mind is tsubaki from kare kano and maybe intergra from hellsing

I guess my personal desire to see more of it could be that I'm not much of a super-femme girl myself, in my own perception. I also tend to be attracted to girls (and guys) who are a little more gender-neutral. While I like femme well enough and I do enjoy yuri featuring girls of this type, I sometimes feel like it could be a little more realistic and/or representative. I like my yuri not only to be hot/sweet, but to be a little more accurate because I like identifying with it.
I guess I have a little bit of a different view than Lady Michelle Winters (and I'll stress that I'm not attacking you or anything, your opinions are yours and mine are mine :3). I do like boyish girls, just because they're boyish girls. I really can't name a reason beyond that. It's just appealing to me for a girl not to fit the traditional concept of what a girl should look like and be.

Well considering all humans are female when first conceived, I guess that even the most Macho Man, has some femininity that is left over ^^ also there are 2 boyish females in strawberry panic!

Vampire_Reiko Quite frankly I'm glad they're mostly all Nekos. I'm a Neko myself. I hope I don't offend anyone, but I believe if Tachi's want to be like a boy so much they should become transgendered and replace their va-j-j with a pen0r.
But honestly, most tachi/butch/boyish types really identify strongly as female, they just present themselves in a more masculine way. It doesn't necessarily mean going all out on the masculine thing or wanting to be a boy--the majority are not at all interested in being or becoming male.

yes in alot of cases in real life, including my own, there is a kind of tom-boyish girl in there somewhere.

There needs to be more tomboys although I still like feminine girls. Also i'm just wondering why use different terms for masculine and feminine in yuri? Seriously whats with Tachi and Neko when Seme and Uke work just fine? I'm just curious really it strikes me as strange.

As long as she looks like a girl and can be distinguished as a girl by her actions, I could care less if a character is a tomboy/tachi/seme/butch/whatever. It's the female form and personality I like to see, especially when said form is "applied" to another female form. XP
