History:
Firefly is an American science fiction television series created by writer/director Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, under his Mutant Enemy Productions. Its naturalistic future setting, modeled after traditional Western movie motifs, presents an atypical science fiction backdrop for the narrative.
Firefly premiered in the United States and Canada on the FOX network on September 20, 2002. It was canceled after only eleven of the fourteen produced episodes were aired. Despite the series' relatively short life span, it received strong sales when it was released on DVD, and has an extremely loyal fanbase. In 2003 the show won an Emmy for "Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series" and in its short existence highly influenced the television science fiction genre both in style and characterization.
Thanks to rabid fan support, Universal Pictures produced a film based on the series, titled Serenity, on Sept. 30, 2005. The film gained critical success as well as relatively impressive box office results for being a motion picture based on a 'failed' television show.

Browncoats:
Quote:
Browncoat is a slang term from the space western TV series Firefly (and its big-screen "sequel", Serenity) for a member of the Independent Faction, which lost to the Alliance in the Unification War. It is also a nickname for fans of the series.
Browncoats are hardcore. There are not many fanbases that can rival Firefly in the intense amount of devotion that fans have towards the show. Browncoat factions have popped up all across the US as well as internationally, the most dominate being the San Francisco Browncoats.
