Firefly // Serenity

Oh, you knew it was only a matter of time before this little shrine was made. And what a fun place it will grow to be. Join me fellow Browncoats and inquiring minds! and welcome to what might be the best fandom ever.

Summary:

Five hundred years in the future, Mal Reynolds ends up on the losing side of a war. He escapes with little more than his own skin, one trusted friend, and his ship, the Firefly-class freighter Serenity.

Every day since then, his mission has been a simple one: Hire a crew; find a job; and just keep on flyin'.

Then, one day, he takes on a couple of mysterious passengers — and his life gets a whole lot more complicated.

So far the story and characters of the show can be found in:

+ Firefly (TV show)
+ Better Days (Comic)
+ Those Left Behind (Comic)
+ Serenity (Movie)

History:

Firefly is an American science fiction television series created by writer/director Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, under his Mutant Enemy Productions. Its naturalistic future setting, modeled after traditional Western movie motifs, presents an atypical science fiction backdrop for the narrative.

Firefly premiered in the United States and Canada on the FOX network on September 20, 2002. It was canceled after only eleven of the fourteen produced episodes were aired. Despite the series' relatively short life span, it received strong sales when it was released on DVD, and has an extremely loyal fanbase. In 2003 the show won an Emmy for "Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series" and in its short existence highly influenced the television science fiction genre both in style and characterization.

Thanks to rabid fan support, Universal Pictures produced a film based on the series, titled Serenity, on Sept. 30, 2005. The film gained critical success as well as relatively impressive box office results for being a motion picture based on a 'failed' television show.

News:

A MMORPG game based on the Firefly Verse is in production. You can gather updates, news, theories, and rumors on the project here.

Fun Stuff:

Done the Impossible is a documentary of the rise and fall and rebirth of the Firefly 'verse
as told from the perspective of the fans who helped save it.

Serenity Stuff at TFAW.com - quite an impressive amount of fun things to buy.

Firefly Flik:

Filk is a musical culture, genre, and community tied to science fiction/fantasy fandoms and has been an active pastime of fanbased nerds since the early 1950s.

Firefly Filk are songs written about and inspired by the show Firefly (and Serenity) by fans. Obviously. Firefly has a pretty impressive Filk catalouge; holding its own against Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Star Trek Filk. Here are some places to find Firefly Filk:

Sing a Song of Saffron was a contest to create a song about the ever name and husband changing' 'Saffron'.

Dan Sehane wrote and preforms the popular "I'm Gonna See Serenity"

The Bedlam Bards are most certainly the most well known of Firefly Filkers, with "Ode to Joss," "Big Damn Trilogy," and "On the Drift" being their most popular songs.

River and the Reavers is a fanmade Firefly band.

Firefly Music Project is where fans create and post their own songs about Firefly and Serenity.

The Signal is _the_ Firefly podcast and have compiled a rather lengthy list of filk they have used and created for past episodes of the show.

Browncoats:

Quote:
Browncoat is a slang term from the space western TV series Firefly (and its big-screen "sequel", Serenity) for a member of the Independent Faction, which lost to the Alliance in the Unification War. It is also a nickname for fans of the series.

Browncoats are hardcore. There are not many fanbases that can rival Firefly in the intense amount of devotion that fans have towards the show. Browncoat factions have popped up all across the US as well as internationally, the most dominate being the San Francisco Browncoats.

To find a complete list of Browncoat groups, check here at The Big Damn Bored. If you live in or near a major city more then likely you have an active Browncoat faction near you.

Guild Viewing:

Because of time differences we obviously can't watch the same episode at the same time all the time (although dammit we try), so this is how it works: There is a date in which to aim for where you have a certain number of episodes watched. That's it! It's very simple. There is a "buffer" time between each viewing block so at least I can nerd out and discuss the most recently viewed episodes. There are 3 episodes per block of viewing, so the schedule looks like this:

Name of Episode #
Brief Summary
Name of Episode #
Brief Summary
Name of Episode #
Brief Summary

---> Date to have finished watching by

Of course anyone can view at whatever speed they want and of course this isn't by any means a strict schedule - just an attempt at a long distance collective viewing.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

Serenity - Part 1 & 2
The crew of Serenity is eager to rid themsleves of an easily traceable cargo they salvaged from a vessel adrift in space, totally unaware that a passenger has brought an even more dangers cargo aboard.
The Train Job
Mal has seconded thoughts after discovering the two boxes of Alliance goods his crew has been hired to steal are full of badly needed medical supplies for the mining town of Paradiso.
Bushwhacked
After encountering a booby-trapped spacecraft carrying the lone crew member of a horrific Reaver attack, Serenity is boarded by an Alliance Commander looking for Simon and River.

---> TBA

Shindig
In order to secure a job transporting cargo off-planet, Mal attends a social event where a dance with Inara leads to him being challenged to a sword fight in defense of her honor.
Safe
When Simon is kidnapped by a group of villagers in need of a doctor, Serenity is forced to make contact with an Alliance ship in order to seek medical help.
Our Mrs. Reynolds
After a celebration in which the crew is honored for ridding a planet of a group of bandits, they return to Serenity to find a woman who claims to be Mal's new wife.

---> TBA

Jaynestown
The crew lands on a planet were they are shocked to discover Jayne is a local hero of Robin Hood-like mythic proportions.
Out of Gas
When Serenity becomes crippled, Mal orders everyone to abandon ship while he stays behind.
Ariel
Simon offers the crew a proposition: if they help him sneak into a hospital so he can run-tests on her, he'll tell them where to find medical supplies that will fetch an enormous price on the black market.

---> TBA

I think we should do like a long distance watching of Firefly. Like, pick days to watch a certain episode and then talk about it. Or something. redface

I like that idea of watching episodes together... It would be epic on so many levels.

Right? We just gonna figure out a good time. I'm thinkin' starting after Thanksgiving and going until Christmas, or a shorter amount of time. Not like there are a lot of episodes to wade through (*Tear!*).

And your in friggin' Texas! You gotta check into a Browncoat group near you, see what events they hold and do- maybe get a shirt. xd

Except I don't have many friends here... And know nothing on how to find things here... Since I'm not in a big town and all.

But Browncoats are your friends. You just haven't met them yet. Contacting the nearest faction near you would be just the right step forward in any direction, if that makes sense.

What?

I'm saying you'd go to a Browncoat event and then you'd know people.

What? How do you know about events? I don't even know of these events... Because there aren't any! I live in the middle of nowhere! Not a big city like Matt... Middle of nowhere Texas.

You don't have access to a Car? Shindigs are usually like mini Firefly cons that last 2 or 3 days. In the first post under 'Browncoats' is a link to a large list of Browncoat groups around the world, I know there are a least two in Texas.

You don't have to go or look into them or anything, just letting you know you could go to an event. I can't.
