I have no clue actually if there's one definitive goth band but if there was I'd say it was Bauhaus.
I think they have the edge on Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Sisters, Joy Division and The Cure because they never strayed from goth.
And just look at Peter Murphy! He's like a modern day Dracula.
But anyways what do you guys think?

Probably Bauhaus but Gloria Mundi is also very important. Their music obviously influenced bands in the first wave and according to Mick Mercer Bauhaus stole their look and sound from them.

Yes, that happened after a gig with them (Bauhaus and Gloria Mundi. After that Bauhaus went through an image change). I say that it was one of the greatest influences. Aww... I forgot the ornate...

That's a fresh answer. Everyone always forgets the Damned's contribution to goth, but why do you think their the definitive goth band?

alice from weirdland That's a fresh answer. Everyone always forgets the Damned's contribution to goth, but why do you think their the definitive goth band? Well, they are the first. Influencial in goth music and style. Dave Vanian's dark crooning singing voice, the psychedelic but still punk sound. Plus, they've been doing the cabaret look since the mid 1970's. And then the Vampiric look in the early 1980's. And they are still goth and still kickin'. And if you listen to them from Music for Pleasure to Strawberries and foward you can listen to the progression from proto goth punk to modern goth.

Screaming Lord Sutch def. introduced horror elements into rock.
Way to stretch out the page stare
Next time just use one picture.

the damned's more gothic music is hideously underrated. phantasmagoria = love. <3
but i'd still probably agree at bauhaus being the definitive. they're the band that everyone likes at least a couple of songs by, whereas bands like the cure and even siouxsie are sometimes quite disliked. D:

Joy Division's Closer and Bauhaus Mask are probably the most important albums for the development of Goth.
