This is something that I've been curious about... mostly because I seem to be afflicted with it and still am mystified by it.

Why are there so many squealing Raistlin fans?

I mean, let's break this down...

1. Raistlin is not exactly attractive in the physical sense. He was a scrawny, sickly, cynical child and the Test only made it worse.

2. Raistlin is not a nice guy. He used and abused his own brother as well as his companions, abandoned them all, plotted to kill his half sister, tortured his apprentice, and then of course there is that whole "tried to become a god" bit.

3. Raistlin is certainly NOT a people person. He's cynical, sarcastic, and doesn't really give a damn about anyone but himself.

And yet... we love him. Why? What is there to like about him? Did his momentary kindness to Bupu maybe give us hope he might be changed? (You guys didn't pay attention to the whole bit with Crysania, did you?)
Do we pity him for all the hardship he's endured and admire him for rising to power despite it all?
Or is it just because, for some odd reason, the power and cynicism is somehow attractive in and of itself?

Raistlin is the epitome of "the little guy making good", he was the weakest character (physically) in the series and he became the most powerful, enigmatic person, (and yes I mean person, because that's what he became to me at least) in the entire series. Who doesn't want to overcome the difficulties he has and become the MAN? And no NEVER pity.

Raistlin is by far the most complex off the companions. He turned to the dark side so he could do good for the unnoticed and riddiculed people of Krynn. He was searching for an acutal sense of justice and balance, but in the end he discovered that no matter what he does there is always someone who will suffer.

In my opinion he was wronged in the test as Par Salin went particularly hard on Raist in hopes Fistidanelus would come to help the powerful young man, and then made it worse when he added the "teaching tool" that was the cursed eyes. If it weren't for those two things Raistlin would probably be dramaticly different as a character.

I love Raistlin for his 'hidden meanings' and symbolism, and how no one, not even Raistlin, fully knew why Raistlin did the things he did..

heh... thanks.

I find it much easier to write out the words than to talk.

The reason I love Raistlin? It really has to do with the way the authors portray him. It's like Harry Potter, and many other books. If you look at the main characters, you'll see that they all have some disadvantage. For most people, that makes them able to relate to the character more.
Well, that's my theory, anyway.

I LOVE Raistlin for all those reasons and more, and he didn't only care for himselve he cared for all the little people, the weak, the sick, the outsiders and so on. He care for them. I mean he'd spend hours caring for the sick and injured, and what does he get? Nothing, but he still does it. And lets not forget Fizbn, and the gully dwarf(what was her name?).

I personally love Raist for all his secrecy and mysticism. He's one of the most difficult characters in any series to figure out, and once you finally think you know everything there is to know about him, something new appears. It's exciting. biggrin

bupu

Bupu showed us that Raist definitely had a tender side that not many knew about.

I think everyone can relate to Raistlin because deep down we all feel like him at times. Everyone tried to keep him back, never belived in him and what he wanted to do. He always had to try and keep up with his brother and he was teased and picked on as a child. And in the end he ended up on top and still even when everyone thought he was a lost cause... he was still looking out for the little guy. He had a heart of gold surounded by a layer of ice the world put there.
