:] My first post in this guild!

I have a bit of a question and would like some advice.

I bought a skirt and a shirt not too long ago (XD from a country western store!) but it has lolita look to it.

My plans are to shorten it and add lace, bows and what not. I dont have any pictures... But if anyone has any ideas on what I could add to a plain-looking black with white accents skirt, give 'em to me~

Sewing tips for lace, ribbons and making things ruffley would also be appreciated. heart

I've noticed that when most people start out with gothic lolita fashion, they're discouraged by the high prices of the dresses. Then, they see a glimmer of light when they see how cheap square dancing dresses are.
Yes, the dresses can somewhat resemble gothic lolita fashion, but they are not quite right. Gothic lolita skirts generally are in a bell shape, whereas, square dancing dress are full circle skirts. Although you can alter the skirt to look very cute and lolita, there's always that slight offness and a hint of country western. I think that square dancing skirts and dresses would be a lovely starting post for the learner on adding embeleshes, but be careful. You don't want to end up looking like you came from a hoe-down.
Oh, I hope that didn't seem rude. I really wasn't trying to be. I made the same mistake of thinking that a square dance skirt could be used too. Luckily, I never bought one. I finally noticed the huge difference.

Hmm... *thinks hard*

I've been attempting to sew a lolita skirt. I cut out a full circle, subtracted a circle from the center for my waist, and used a tight elastic to make ruffles throughout the round skirt. This is a hoe-down pattern?????? I made this pattern up myself, and it sounds like it is very wrong.

Can you please show pictures comparing.. or provide a method for making the "bell" shaped lolita skirt?

Thank you.

Anything that comes from a western store and can resemble a square dancing skirt or dress is not Lolita nor should it be "modified" into Lolita. I suggest that you buy a skirt from a place like In the Starlight which has affordable prices or making one from scratch.
