New guilds are always cool and this is original enough to last.

It was chiku's idea, but she's been banned and hence disappeared.
I need everyone's opinion on this- it seems to me like ED guilds are too centered on elitism and complaining about less able users. I enjoy a small dose of elitism every once in the while, too, but it seems counterproductive to complain, exclude, and heckle, rather than to come up with a short users guide. Which I think will improve the climate of the Extended Discussion.

Great idea.
I'm actually really terrible at debating, so this will help a lot.

Which I think will improve the climate of the Extended Discussion. Elitism doesn't bother me so much as pretentiousness...also known as pseudo-elitism or "ignoring our own flaws while moping over everyone else's." If someone is shrugged off because they have nothing to contribute to a discussion where there is actual closure in sight, that's one thing, but making a guild based entirely around excluding certain types of people is ridiculous, and in my experience, those in charge of deciding whom to allow or deny access tend to be petty and undereducated in their own right. It made me facepalm when I was invited to a guild where one of the main criteria was "must be liturate".

Saeric Great idea. I'm actually really terrible at debating, so this will help a lot. Here's a tip I generally give: debating is not about stringing facts together to prove your point. Think of it more as a jury trial -- the lawyers aren't trying to prove guilt or innocence, they're trying to convince twelve specific people that they are the more honest and trustworthy opponent. In a forum debate like in the ED, remember that you're trading blows with someone, but also that you're doing it essentially onstage. Knowledge is only part of the act -- presentation, credibility, persuasiveness... they're just as important. Your position may be absolutely correct, but if it's delivered poorly it'll be difficult to win others to your side. Meanwhile, though, you can spew blatant rubbish, but if it sounds convincing and no one calls shenanigans on you, it passes. It's just like being OJ Simpson -- guilty as hell, but with a lawyer who can convince twelve people he might not be.

That was really eloquent, faolan.
Maybe you could write a thread on presentation? Only place I've ever really touched on the idea is religion and animal rights debates.

My pleasure. ^_~ I can't promise it in a timely manner -- work takes up a lot of time and energy during the week -- but I may be able to cling to my sister's laptop long enough today to knock it out. xd

Because I can't see a person making a guild like this and then doing something terrible to get banned.
