I know you've probably though about it before. I started thinking about this more after seeing the preview for the next episode where Sokka gets a teacher. What if he was getting a bending master instead?
Forget the fact that he is from a Water Tribe. What element could you see him bending?

Sokka is actually going to learn how to use a sword, and therefore, he needs a teacher.
However, I could definitely see Sokka as an earthbender.

I have been think a lot about that 2, I think that Sokka could be a great bender. I've been wondering, how come some people are benders and some people arent?

its probably hereditary, and i think soka would be great as a earth bender heh heh, it would funny also mrgreen

Bending is a recessive trait. However, what element you bend is not genetic at all. It's simply how you are trained. Technically, if one had infinite intellectual capacity like the Avatar, one could learn all four. However, normal people are limited to a single element due to the fragility of their bodies and weak minds. The Avatar has learned all four bending styles many times, so each new Avatar is simply relearning them. In contrast, normal people can spend a lifetime studying a single one and not master it.
The reason all Air Nomads can bend is simple. They all have the trait for bending. maybe they didn't at the beginning, but eventually all the non-benders died through natural selection. You know, falling to their deaths and all that.

I'm going to assume that you've read harry potter and use that as an example, similar to the way muggles can have magical children, and magical parents can have squib, or muggle children. It all depends on the aptitude of the person, we've been shown time and time again that sokka is not the brightest crayon in the box. i doubt that he could master any for of bending.

Personally, I wouldn't want him to be any type of bender; being a non-bender has effected him greatly and formed him into the character he is. Plus, it's nice to have some non-benders to show us that you don't need bending to be awesome.
I believe bending is more based on spiritual connection to nature, hence why just about every air nomad has been able to bend air. Of course, a lot of this is sepculation.JewelWoods we've been shown time and time again that sokka is not the brightest crayon in the box. i doubt that he could master any for of bending.

Yeah, I mean Sokka is awesome bender or not. But I think it would be cool if he like discovered he could bend and save everybody...or something. I could just see him and Katara side by side, bending and kicking butt. cool

Bending is not just a heredutary thing, but also a spirtual thing. It tells you hting on wikipedia, but I think uf Sokka were to bend any element it would more likely be fire because he has an attitude, and a temper. He says he hats the fire nation, but he is very much like most of their citizens, he has a huge love for meat, he gets angry quick, and he thinks he is God alot of the time. But for all of his weak points he has good ones as well, such as his loyalty to his friends, his compassion for those in a lower place than himself, and his brains many people don't realize it, because it hasn't been shown very much, but Sokka is extrememly intetelligent, which that alone makes him one of my favorite characters.

i think soka would be a good water bender because earth and fire are really brute elements and soka really isn't forceful air you have to be patient and well soka is not patient so the only one left is water
