You were expecting dogfights, weren't you? I would be. I was watching a movie just now, and they got to this part where they were talking about dogfights. Showing footage of dogs biting each other and whatnot. Brought to mind was Michael Vick, and the public backlash that hit him. On the other hand, I've never seen anyone (besides psycho religious zealots) protesting pokemon for really any reason. But what's the difference? At what point did causing beloved, befriended creatures to fight each other turn out to be ok? Why are pokemon any different than real pet fights? Simply because they're accepted as fiction? If that's the case, why do people accept that children can separate fact from fiction when it comes to pokemon?

I think it's because in the American version, pokemon never really get hurt. In the Japanese version, they die when they lose, none of this KO'd stuff. I don't know. I always thought the idea behind pokemon was barbaric, but the general stupid nature of the show/manga/movies just made me write it off as idiotic kids material.

I think Pokemon's okay because they're not real. Plus, Professor Oak makes it an issue at the beginning of the game to tell you that Pokemon are our friends and companions. Some people keep them for pets, other people keep them for fighting, and that either way the Pokemon are happy.
Besides, Pokemon takes place in another universe altogether. Their culture says that it's okay to take five-hundred-pounds monsters and shove them into balls the size of your fist for hours, days, maybe even weeks. Hell, you might shove them into a computer and forget about them for years.
You can't do that with dogs. Unless you cremate them first, but I dont know if this conversation really needs to go down that route.
And yes, I'm back. This has to be my first post in about... I dont know, maybe a month. I'm in another one of my moods. Things aren't going well for me in real life. The relationships I'm having with people are drastically changing and I dont have a clue why or how, so I'm a little moody lately. Plus it doesn't help that I have writer's block.

I don't know if that makes it okay though. I mean, yes, it's another world, but it's a world we're glorifying. Should we really be sending the message to kids that enslaving creatures for gladiatorial combat is okay, in any reality? Really, why does Ash send Pikachu to fight? His own glory and gratification. He sends his 'friend' in to combat with a very real possibility of death, because he wants to win a meaningless competition? That's kinda sick. Meh, pokemon is dumb anyway.
