4Chan is a popular online message board, which originated from it's counterpart 2chan, which was made (and is popular in) Japan. While 4chan is the most popular English- speaking spinoff of the site, 2chan is far larger, and has a major place in Japanese popular culture. For example, 2chan has such a devoted following, that back in the early 2000's the users on 2chan banded together and voted a popular Japanese comedian notorious for peeping in a woman's bathroom man of the year. Runners up were George Bush and Osama Bin Laden.

The term anonymous comes from the -Chan board's most defining feature: On the sites, everyone is encouraged to post under their uniform name, now famous in their pop culture, Anonymous. This was designed to dispel the usual hierarchy you usually find in online opinionated boards, eliminating the aspect of certain posters, due to their popularity on the boards, having more political sway.
