And I dont mean just new wave, post punk and goth.

Like overall.

Personally, I find The Pixies, Nirvana, Radiohead, Coldplay, MCR, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Muse disgustingly overated.

But as for new wave and post punk bands, I'd say that Blondie, Depeche Mode and The Cure are overated.

I like The Cure and Depeche Mode but everyone listens to them and they get played to death.

Overated?

I would say that Muse and Artic Monkeys are really overated.

Hmmm. The Postal Service come to mind immediately. And I think most of the synthpop genre is overrated. It's fun music to listen to, but it doesn't take a whole lot of musical skill to produce.

And how could I forget the Sex Pistols? They're seen as an icon of rebellion and nonconformity, but they were pretty much spoon-fed their political ideals and public guises by Malcolm McLaren, who recognized a good marketing opportunity when he saw one. They were the quintessential posers.

I didn't even know that people even thought they were good.

I've always thought of them as a shitty hard rock band.

I agree with all those except I like the Cruxshadows.
Not enough that I would buy one of their cds but I like some of their stuff.

Nirvana are terrible, I can't believe people think thats underground music.

I would have to disagree with the Cure being an overrated band. Some of their songs are WAY overplayed - but that's maybe five songs. My favorite songs never get played on the radio or even in the local goth / 80's clubs.

Nirvana - maybe? but you have to remember their history. Back in the day they used to only play in dive clubs and the people of Seatle never wanted them to leave! But oddly enough they got popular and Kurt wasn't even ready for the popularity... I don't think he even knew how to shop for clothes!

Kiss - part of their *cultur* is that they even overrate THEMSELVES!!!! It's part of the act!

Beatles - if you brought that many hippies and love into the world - you'd be overrated too! - Though, I don't know... I don't really think of them as overrated. They were perfect for their time, they grew and evolved with the world and people still love them cause they were about LOVE! (and I'm sure for America those cute English accents helped but I digress...)

Cruxshadows are working their way to being overrated, fast. I think they can still save themselves... though they wont....

What get me - and why I think they are overrated is Depeche Mode. Why, puching thirty years after they were 'in the spotlight' popular do I still have to pay $100 for a ticket.... I know Ticketmaster has some of the overpriced blame.... BUT STILL!!!!

Yeah, I see where your coming from.

But Kiss, they shouldn't be even considered overrated since Gene Simmons and the boys have always put their marketing and gimmick before their music.

Mindless Self Indulgence... ugh.

Nirvana and Tool? I'd have to disagree. They don't seem to be in the spotlight as much anymore, so I can't complain that they're over-rated. Then again, I'm biased. I love both of those bands.

Tool is a very very talented band... although I could complain that they overuse certain playing techniques. My bandmates and I poke fun at it sometimes, though we really love the band.

Nirvana... Kurt Cobain was a genius. Enough said.

I don't disagree with you when you say that Tool is talented band, their songs are so complex and dynamic.

But to me, whenever I turn around I see like 3 people wearing Tool shirts. Its over exposure to the extreme.

Same goes for HIM, they gross me out. I've seen them live (was dragged by a friend) and their insanely boring yet the crowd was going crazy since they claim Vil Vallo is hot. If they were talented it would be one thing but the romanticism of death gets old and their not dynamic enough that their songs can be easily differentiated.

Very true. But would they want it any other way? Probably not. And they point out that they've sold out, and they don't care about thier fans all that much. Most of thier fans are kinda douche-y anyway, hah.

HIM...okay in very small doses. They are awfully repetitive. And yeah, very very commercial.

I'd have to say Tool. I used to like them, now they just bore me to tears.
