Welcome to Sam's Town's first ever contest.
The idea of this contest is fairly simple.
Take your favourite Killers song, and weave the lyrics into a story.

EXAMPLE:

Quote:
He's with the hippie in the park
Coming over the dark
Just trying to get some of that little girl play

YOU COULD WRITE:
"Once upon a time there lived a guy named Steve.
One day he decided to take a walk to the park.
Once he got there he met a girl named Pine Flower."

Only, of course, you need to write a full short story, based on the whole song, not just one part.
Entries will be judged on composition, coherence, and how well they represent the song.

RULES:
+ Keep the story PG 13
+ Keep the story relatively short
+ One entry per person, no mules please
+ You can use any Killers song at all except covers.
+ Please pick a single song to work with, UNLESS you are doing the Murder Mystery Trilogy.
+ Post HERE that you would like to enter, then PM entries to Michael-Valentine.
+ Follow the guild rules, and the Gaia ToS and all that good stuff.
+ there must be at least 10 entries for the contest to finish
+ DEADLINE: TBA
+ PRIZE:
First Place: 5k
2nd place: your choice of one cash shop item worth 25c or under.

An Interpretation of The Killers' "Murder Trilogy"

Part 1: "Leave the Bourbon On the Shelf"

"Finally, we can have a night where you aren't working late!" exclaimed Brandon.
"Yeah, we can watch that movie you wanted to see. What's it called, Control?" asked Jennifer.
"Yeah, it sounds pretty cool. You might like it, too." Jennifer's pager started beeping.
"Oh, I have to go. Let me put this back." Jennifer said while holding a bottle of bourbon.
"No, it's okay. Leave the bourbon on the shelf, I might drink it myself a little later." said Brandon. "What's that rhyme I made for you again? Leave the bourbon on the shelf... I'll drink it by myself... I love you endlessly... darkin' don't you see... I'm satisfied."
"Oh, thank you, honey. I need to go now. I love you!"
"I love you too!" they said as they shared a brief kiss. As they broke off the kiss, Brandon felt empty, for he would not see his lover until 6:00. And all he could do was watch TV and drink. Jennifer ran out the door in a hurry. As she left, Brandon saw that the television was on. But he felt like drinking the bourbon she had left on the light green shelf. He turned it off, and smiled.

At about four 'o clock in the afternoon, he had finished the bourbon up to the amount where he was at the highest point of "buzzed", almost to the status of "drunk". But he knew better, so he turned on the TV. As soon as he pressed the glowing maroon power button on the small remote, the phone rang. He stumbled, but tripped on some of his furniture. As the phone continued to ring, he decided to have no more alcohol of any kind that day, considering how damn clumsy he'd become. Or maybe for the next week. But then again, he'd gone a day once before, but never a week without anything with alcohol. Some would call it an addiction, he would call it self-medication. He struggled to get up, but he couldn't. As the call finally reached the machine, Brandon was delighted to hear Jennifer's voice. "Hey, it's me. Listen, I am really sorry. I need to work till 11:30. I really want to be with you. Sorry!" Jennifer's voice said.

The final "beep" of the machine seemed to last forever, like a heart monitor's long "beep" after the heart had been stopped. He cried, "Why? Why can't you see me? Where do I stand? Tell me!", while on the floor, crying and broken like a dog with a broken leg in the rain. He bawled for about six minutes more. He thought, "You know what? I'll go down there myself. Then I'll ask her where I stand with her. And then I'll hold her tight, and this will go away!" He hopped into his car with a smile, and drove off to see his girlfriend.

When he got to the park near where she worked, he decided to sit down and think about what he was going to say. He was almost drunk, after all. He thought about it for fifteen minutes. He was going to say, "Jenny, I need to talk to you. You've been doing this for 5 years. Do you really love me? Is it your job or me? Where do I stand?" As soon as he got up to walk to her building, he heard a laugh. A sweet, high-pitched laugh, much like Jennifer's when she was having fun with Brandon. He turned to the laugh, and saw his Jennifer and another man rolling together in the green grass and gold autumn leaves. He had never been so devastated in his life. But then his girlfriend and the man shared a long hard kiss, and that devastated him even more. He saw them walk back to her building together, holding hands.

He sped back to the house. He grabbed the bourbon and drank it straight from the bottle. He cried even more than earlier that day, soaking himself it the pain reliever, though it did nothing to calm the pain. "I know what I'll do." he whispered to himself. As he finished drowning himself in bourbon, he planned a less-metaphorical drowning for Jennifer.

Part 2: "Midnight Show"

At about eleven-twenty pm, Brandon called Jennifer.

"Hello?" asked Jennifer.
"Hey it's me!" Brandon exclaimed.
"Oh my gosh, Brandon. I missed you all day!"

She was lying through her teeth.

"So honey, guess what?" said Brandon.
"What?" responded Jennifer.
"You know that nightclub we wanted to go to? The one with the cool band?"
"Yes?"
"I've gotten us VIP passes!"
"You're kidding me! I've wanted to go VIP style there ever since I moved here!"
"Yeah! But I need to pick you up quick, the band is playing a midnight show."
"Oh my gosh! Yes, get here quickly!"
"Okay honey, I'll hop in my car right now. Love you!"
"Love you too!" she said as she hung up the phone.

He knew that the club, the Live, though small, and relatively unheard of, was one of the coolest clubs in Santa Monica beach area. He also knew it was near a pier. He thought to himself, It's amazing what a small push can do, especially if it is over a 50-foot high above sea level wooden structure into a body of water. He made a dark smile and continued to drive.

When he got to her building, he saw her breaking off a handshake with the man he saw her with earlier before. As a disgusted look rapidly grew across his face, he thought, Oh, just kiss. It will be the last time, anyways.

"Honey!" he called.
"Brandon!" she yelled back.
"So, ready to roll? I don't think it's that far from here."
"Nah, I've driven there from here before."
With that demon he thought to himself.
"Okay, if you say so. What's the name of that band that's there again?" asked Brandon.
"'The Genius something Poets'. I don't remember it all." said Jennifer.
"Oh, okay."
"Honey?"
"Yeah?"
"You seem a little weird."
"Um, I had a drink earlier, but that's it."
"Oh, okay."

After five minutes, they got to the Live. The entered, sat down in the bright red booths reserved for VIPs, had a few drinks, and listened to the band.

About three-quarters through the performance, Jennifer's phone rang. Brandon heard her say, "Hello? Oh hi. Right now. Okay, okay, don't get too excited. I'll be there in a few minutes. Lo- oh, never mind. Bye."

"Who was that?" Brandon asked.
"Oh, just work. I need to go now, so let's hop in the car." said Jennifer.
"Whoa, what the hell?"
"I need to go to work, so drive!"
"What the f*ck? No! What the hell kind of workplace demands you show up at 1:00am?"
"Mine, so let's go!"
"No. I don't believe you."
"Brandon, it's f*cking simple: I need to go to work now."
"No, you don't."
"Fine, I'll drive myself!" she yelled as she stormed out of the club.
"Jenny!" Brandon yelled back as he went after her.

They were both outside the Live.

"Brandon, I love you. But I have somewhere to go."
"Jenny, where do I stand with you? I take you out for a nice night and you walk out on me at 1:00 am?! No, I won't stand for this any longer."
"I go to my job because to get money for your f*cking bourbon!"

A few tears trickled down Brandon's cheeks. He felt like his heart had been pierced. She knew he was an alcoholic. She knew that he needed to have it to survive everyday.

"And the bourbon's the reason you can't hold up a f*cking job!" she yelled at him.
"SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP!" he cried.
"Oh, you shut up, you pathetic little boy."

He could take no more. He grabbed her and pushed her off the pier. She yelled horribly as she fell down and hit the water. He breathed a few heavy breaths, then sighed. The deed was done. He went back into the live to hear the band finish they're concert. He was almost to the point of passed-out drunk. He would need to call a cab and pick up his car the next day.

After the concert ended, he went outside.

Standing, in front of him, drenched, was Jennifer.

"What the hell, Brandon?!" she screamed.
"Jenny, I know what you've been doing. I saw you with him today."
"What are you talking about? What are you saying?"
"Liar! You rolled on the leaves and kissed him just this afternoon!"
"Okay, you're right! I was cheating on you and I did kiss him. But I was going to break it off with Ronnie the next weekend!"
"No. I'll never let you go."
"Brandon what are you do-?!" she muffled as Brandon squeezed her.

He squeezed her hard, and after two minutes, she could speak no more. Brandon let her fall down slowly, recovering from the shock of what he just did.

Five minutes passed, and the shock was over. And then Brandon heard the high-pitched, in-out sound of a siren. Someone had seen him and called the cops! He saw the nearest taxi, pushed someone who was entering it out of it, and slammed the door.

"Where to?" asked the driver. "Can you keep a secret?" asked Brandon. "Uh, yeah, sure." the driver said, puzzled by the question. "Then anywhere! Just get the f*ck out of here!"

The chase lasted seven minutes, and then Brandon was pulled out of the car. His head was slammed against the hood of the police car. He could hear something like "...arrested...murder...Jennifer Dillan..." but as he slipped away into unconsciousness, the only thing he could picture was Jennifer's face as he let her go.

Part 3: "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine"

Brandon slowly woke up. His eyes opened gradually. He had such a bad hangover. At first he couldn't feel a thing, but he soon realized that he was not sleeping on a bed. Ugh, I was so drunk I couldn't even find the bed he thought. "Awake now, are we?" said the man next to him. "Aaah!" screamed Brandon. "What the hell are you doing in my hou- wait. Where am I?!" asked Brandon.

"Wow, they said you would have a hangover, but... Aw fine." said the man.
He grumbled under his breath, "Why do I have to be the guy to tell him this?"
The man said, "Look your in prison."

For about ten seconds, Brandon made no sound, trying to comprehend what he had just heard. Why am I in prison? What happened last night? And then everything came rushing back to him. He went from shocked to angry to frightened to sad to angry again to frightened again, within the course of five seconds.

Brandon started to weep. "Dude, shut up, they'll beat the sh*t out of you for crying here!" the man whispered. "Jenny!" Brandon cried. "Fine, whatever. It's not me who's going to get beaten." said the man.

A loud voice cam on the intercom and said, "Flowers, Brandon. You will be escorted to interrogation."

"Oh man, you're f*cked. See ya later, dude." said the man.

Two guards took Brandon to a small little room with two men, one looked like a cop and the other looked like a detective.

"So, who do we have here? Flowers, Brandon. For the murder of... Dillan, Jennifer." the cop said.
"So we have a thing called Due Process, in which you get to explain what happened. So, what happened?" asked the detective.

Brandon started to explain. "Well, we took a walk last night." But it wasn't the same.
"We had a fight outside a club in the rain."
She said she loved me, "But she had somewhere to go."
She couldn't scream as I held her close! I swore I'd never let her go!
"So I drove her to her workplace. When she was done, she called me to pick her up. I picked her up, and took her back to the club. But she said that she wanted to wait outside. I came out after a little while and saw her drenched, dead body. I don't know why anyone would take a drowned body out of the ocean."

"Uh huh. So why did you catch a cab after you saw the dead body?" asked the detective.
"I thought I saw the murderer's car and hoped to find him." said Brandon.
"I find that highy unlikely."
"Well, how can you find a motive, Jenny was a friend of mine."

Brandon and the detective continued to discuss it more, it was becoming hard for Brandon to hid the truth.

"Look, I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time for me to go. So let me know if it's all right." said Brandon.
"Oh, you're not getting out of here anytime soon." said the detective.

The detective stared him down. Brandon could barely control himself.
"I JUST CAN'T TAKE THIS! I SWEAR I TOLD YOU THE TRUTH!" sreamed Brandon.
"Jenny was a friend of mine!" he yelled again.
"How did you kill her?!" yelled the detective.
Brandon couldn't take it anymore.
"SHE COULDN'T SCREAM AS I HELD HER CLOSE! I SWORE I'D NEVER LET HER GO!"

For about ten seconds, Brandon didn't make a sound.

"Well, we're not putting you in here." said the cop.

"Really?! Oh, thank you! I swear, I'll never do it again!" yelled Brandon.

"We're putting you in the asylum." said the detective.

"What? No, you can't! I won't let you!" Brandon yelled as he tried to strangle the detective. The cop shot him with a tranquilizer gun.

As he slowly passed out, he whispered, "Leave the bourbon on the shelf... and I'll drink it by myself... I love you endlessly... darlin' don't you see... I'm not satisfied."

Did anyone ever enter this??
PostPosted: Fri Dec 14, 2007 6:49 pm

No.... >.<

Come on, guys! This is an easy contest! You can make this story as silly and crazy as your heart desires. I'd enter, but I'm a judge, so it'd hardly be fair.

And there will be a prize (that still needs to be determined).

I'll enter if the contest is still going. Aww why can't we write about those stories? They'd be fun. I really want to do one involving Romeo and Juliet haha but yeah, the main people would probably be two guys. If you bend the rules I'll do a Romeo and Juliet one.

But if not, I'm sure my strange mind can come up with something else.. lol.

I'd probably write a story based on Andy your a star. But I'm not sure if this contest is still on? If it is I will. 3nodding

Well, since no one's won (or entered), I guess the contest is technically still on. You should probably PM Dramatica Away II since she's in charge of this thing before you actually take time to write out anything.

Hey, I'm entering! Just give me a day... no, but please don't close this contest down! I've been interpreting Killers songs ever since I've heard them (I even wrote an interpretation for the murder trilogy!). This is one contest that I actually am very into, so please, PLEASE don't close it!

Thank you.

Remember to PM your entry to Michael-Valentine. Also, remember that you can't write about the Murder Trilogy or covers. Other than that, you can pick any song you want.

Now, it'll probably be a while before any winners are announced, since you might be the only one who's submitted anything... But good luck!

Hmm, I pm'd him a few hours ago telling him about it, and I haven't recieved anything back. So, yeah...

Actually I think I'll change the Murder Trilogy rule.
Now that Bourbon's been released, theres no point in it anymore.
I was a bit disapponited by that (not the song- its great) i mean i always thought it was something more indepth than just a mundane old crime of passion xp

Very well then, that saves me a lot of work. I was beginning to write one for Believe Me Natalie, but now I can show my work. Should I pm you or Michael (since Mike hasn't responded yet)?
