In my class I am the only one who wears a hijab. The other kids treat me different. Mostly after 9/11.

I do not have a hijab. I wear bedouin scarfs to cover my hair, at least I used to do so frequently. People gave me filthy stares. I could feel their hatred penetrating me and I live in a very liberal American City, Seattle Washington!

Sometimes I try to smile at a Muslim woman but you are sometimes so shy or afraid that mostly you look away from me.

My name is Noora and I am rabbat manzil.

I can't say I get treated the same way at school. A lot of people ask really stupid questions regarding my khimar. Others just don't ask at all because they're afraid I'll get mad or something.

Oh, and, it isn't racial discrimination. This type of discrimination refers to religion, not race.

Yes reactions to the hijab can vary quite a bit. I am a guy so i don't wear one lol, but I teach culture and history and the moment I bring it up I get heated responses. Most people immediately assume it is a tool of oppression...and those with at least an open mind are never sure how to approach it or what it represents.

I get weird looks and stares but no one really says anything because many other muslim girls wear it too. But still, someway it's hypocritical if they say things. I mean nuns cover too even if it's for a differnt reason. Why are we only being opressed???

I think it is a problem of the greatest myth that I have seen about Islam...that Islam oppresses women. I really don't see why they believe this, seeing as to how Islam is pretty clear on the equality issue. I suppose they see certain cultures in Islamic countries and apply it to all Islamic countries...i.e. 'the Taliban treated women like crap so that is the Muslim stance'. That actually is one of the most asked questions in my class as well.

Noora of God
You may call me Noora mush quoez (Bad Noora) today because I posted on the Mormon FAQ and now I deserve to be beaten. crying

... What?

As for the topic on hand, no one discriminates here. There are many Muslims in schools, a lot of girls wear hijab and my mom works at the elementary school as a lunch supervisor.

Only once did someone discriminate against us and that was only after 9/11- some guy who was driving past yelled at us to go back to our country. Nothing happened after that, though.

I'm from Canada....Calgary specifically....lol I'm 18 and I was practically born here....but no one has discrimanted against me....ever......

except that time a rude little girl who was haniging out on the street asked what the h*** I was wearing...

People believe what they want to....but the hijaab promotes modesty in women........

and men have guidelines in Islam too....for example they are not to stare at women (which most brown guys do I notice? (I mean me standing at the bus stop and those wierd brown guys turn their heads all the way around as they are driving past me (is there something on my face?))

Anyways my Messiah said (I don't know the exact quote and I am too lazy to go look it up on our site) "that in the Holy Qur'an Allah has stated that eventually the world powers will fall....and currently they are....from the inside" --->I mean they are killing their own future generations with drug rates rising.....divorce rates rising......number of single mothers rising......kids hanging out on the street rising....etc. And this is all because those people do not practice modesty!

Peoples morals are drowning........ crying

Actually while we are on the topic of Hijab......

what is up with those MANY arabic females who wear a hijaab and VERY tight clothing.....

seriously there is no point to the hijaab because you are not practising modesty!

A secondary but important thing about the Ħijāb I think is that it can be a form of da3wah. For example, when other people see you wearing the ħijāb and recognize it for what it is supposed to be, they would be reminded of their religion if they are Muslim, or informed of Islam itself if they were not Muslim.

I see it as a physical manifestation of modesty that only goes hand-in-hand with good morals: piety (taqwā), virtuousness (3iffah), kindness, generousity, helpfulness, truethfulness... ect. And in some places in the world, bravery (facing persecution, and in some countries a ban on the ħijāb).

NOTE: If you are a speaker of Arabic, you might regognize the number "3" as the voiced pharyngeal letter ع or 3ein.

If you are a mutaħajjibah, I hope you know how positively you impact other Muslims around you emotionally. 3nodding

What is hijab?
The word "hijab" is Arabic for "cover" or "barrier". It is generally the clothes adult Muslim women wear during prayer, in public... It in the least covers the entire body except the face and hands (with stricter interpretations that it covers the entire body including the face and hands).

It is also speciffically used for the scarf a woman wears around her face covering (most notably) her hair.
