The Story
It was a quiet night when it happened. We had snuck out of our uncle's house to run away again. This time he wouldn't catch us. We knew just where we would hide. There was an old part of the woods that we could get to before dawn. No one ever went there because they thought there was a curse. That didn't matter to us though cause we just had to get away from that house.
First we crept out one of the back windows once Uncle had drunken himself into a stupor. He wouldn't have woken in that state unless the house caught fire. We had to be quiet because of the neighbors though. They would have taken us back and then we would never have been free.
Quietly we moved through the back roads and then into the tree line of the forest. The air was crisp and damp. The kind of night that you could almost feel something in the air. We had only gone a little ways into the forest when we heard something following us. We moved faster through the woods forgetting to be silent as we feared that we had been found out. At that moment we would have rather died then be caught and made to go back.
Whatever was following us was fast. It caught us with us quickly. By then we could tell from the sounds it made that it wasn't anyone from the village behind us. It was far too big and heavy for that. No some creature from hell was chasing us as we ran for our lives. Our feet couldn't move fast enough though.
With a horrible roar it pounced on us...on my sister Valarie. Its terrible jaws clamped down on her arm and her scream echoed through the forest. I did the only thing I could think of. I picked up a small tree branch that had been nearby and began to strike at the monster's head. It clawed at me but wouldn't let Valarie go until one of the many twigs at the end of the branch struck the monster's eyes.
It howled in pain and pawed at it's face as I gathered my sister up to run again. Her arm was bleeding badly and I would need to wrap it as soon as we got away. We ran and ran until the creature's howls were no longer heard through the trees. We stopped then. I took and tore part of my shirt to wrap her arm up as she breathed heavily.
"Vinny what if it comes after us again? Maybe we should go back." She said to me as we recovered. I shook my head at the very thought of returning to the village. I would rather be eaten by wild animals then go back. "There is no going back Val. We just need to keep going." I smiled to reassure my twin that we were doing the right thing. After an hour break we stood and started away again.
As the full moon faded from the pink tinged sky we found the glade that we had been aiming for. It was peaceful and welcoming. Even though we were hungry and thirsty we were that much more tired. We laid down under a moss covered tree and fell asleep in moments.
When I woke the next night I noticed the lack of my sister's weight on my side. She always slept next to me with her head on my side. I looked around only to no find anyone. The only thing I found was a furry egg by my side and the makeshift bandage that I had placed on my sister's arm.
Now me and my sister were close and we had one of those special bonds that you hear of between twins. It is with that bond that I learned that Valarie had been turned into the egg. There could be no mistake about it. The fur was the same color as our hair and I could almost feel her mind reaching out to mind as she sat in the egg, terrified and confused.
