A Dark Room
Tera struggled as her mother pulled her by her hair towards the dark closet in the second story bedroom. The sound coming from her closed mouth were like the wails of the prisoners trapped in Hades’ underworld. She struggled with all the strength her plump body could provide, but it proved to be in vain. Soon she was in the shadowed closet, her mother closing the door slowly, as if create an air of suspense for the invisible viewers. The dull click of the lock and disappearance of all light put a sense of fear in her so strong it could have crushed a diamond.
She closed her eyes to block out the darkness that surrounded her like a suffocating scarf, but it still pierced through her thin eyelids. She scrambled, bug like, to the far wall of the small closet, only to pace to the other side. She was a scared cat in a unwelcome cage. After what seemed like hours she stopped her pacing to lay curled up on the floor in a fetal position. She held her head in her hands gently almost like she would a child, but her fingers dug into her hair, her knuckles turning white in her fearful grip.
Soon the thing she dreaded more then the darkness or the closed in space reached out to touch her. A ghostly hand reached out to stroke her tangled hair, softly like a mother’s loving touch. Soon more hands reached out to pet her, their own puppy to play with and praise. This happened every time she was in total darkness. They were like moths
Roberts 2
to a lamp, only they flocked towards the dark.
She was not soothed by the pats and caresses as she should have been. Instead she desperately tried to avoid them. The amount of hands in the closet with her made it impossible to avoid the touches. Perhaps the beings were only truly trying to comfort her, but in the act of comforting they scared her even more, to the point of near hysteria.
She never saw the beings, not like she could in broad daylight, which exposed their existence to her. No, in the dark they were near invisible, except for the few wisps of smoke that oddly floated in one place. The smoke was like a loose balloon that floated around trying to escape its cell, but ultimately stayed in one place.
This would be the reasoning as to why Tera feared the dark, with darkness came the invisible, misty beings and their touches. That is why she always slept with a nightlight, though she is well past the age requiring one. There was no nightlight here, no light what so ever and Tera kept awake through hours of unwanted attention from the ghostly hands untill a blinding light signified her mother opening the door and ending her lengthy punishment. That moment all the ghosts would scatter like frightened mice and disappear from her side.
Tera never loved light so much before, only in this time of freedom would she be grateful for the stern look her mother gave her. Of course if her mother hadn’t of put her in the closest in the first place she wouldn’t have to deal with the dark or what brought it. She would take any scolding and groundings over the closet punishment, and she vowed not to anger her mother again.

Letter on a Rock
Her mother’s fury could be hears as Tera ran out of the house. The screen door slammed behind her mixing with the sounds of breaking glass from whatever her mother had broken in her rage. Tera grabbed her backpack from where she left it on the porch, and walked quickly around the house. Once she got out to the back end of the barn she broke out in tears and ran for her quiet spot out in the fields
By the time she reached the unused field the dead grass reached her shoulders and she walked through is as she would walk through water. Occasional dips in the dirt caused her to stumble occasionally but the girl never fell. Here she did not run, but kept to a solemn walk so as not to break the quiet. The deadly silence around her was disrupted by a sudden gust of wind that played with the tall grass and she waited listening to the soothing sound until it stopped.
After a few minutes of walking Tera reached her spot in the middle of the field. It was a large bolder taller then the girls father who stood five foot and seven inches. The rock was wide enough for her plump rear to sit upon with room for another if she choose. As always she stood in front of it contemplating the best way to hoist herself up on to the rock, She was not a strong girl and her hefty body made climbing difficult.
She finally decided to toss her backpack up first. Hefting her face strained with effort from all the books she tossed and missed, it took three more tries to get the pack up on the rock and she was getting impatient with the whole endeavor. Finally Tera scrambled up herself that also took multiple tries and a few added bruises to her tender skin but the girl finally got up it and laid back with a heavy sigh.
The sky above her was a clear crisp blue no sign of rain what so ever. She could see a bird flying over head towards the woods at the other side of the farm. With a groan she sat up and got out a notebook prepared to do some homework while out here. Looking down at blank paper her hand wrote on its own,
Roberts 2
however, and it wasn’t homework she was writing.
The letter of hate grew freely under her black pen. Tera’s face showed the anger she felt, pent up for years and now flowing just as freely as the ink from her pen. It was a short, angry letter and Tera didn’t notice when the wind started to pick up around her. It played with her hair just as it did with the grass but it was not a peaceful play, to onlookers it just added to the girl’s angry image. Once she was done the girl looked at her letter and sighed sadly. Then instead of putting it away she tore it up and let it fly off in the angry wind. She watched as the little pieces scattered and danced across the field towards the forest. Her face held no more anger just a longing as if she wished to do as the paper and fly off with no destination.
With another sigh Tera tossed her backpack from the rock and hopped down, clumsily, after it. She slowly started her way back to the farm house taking a quick look back at her rock, then at the flying paper. Her eyes widened in fear and she turned and ran back home with all the quickness she could muster.
Outside the forest a ghost was collecting the pieces of the letter as if it were confetti and held it close. He did not posses the friendly air of Some ghost that you see in the day time, instead it was a gruesome and morbid appearance that made an onlooker shudder in fear. Once he had all of the pieces of the letter he watched the retreating figure of the girl and his lips pulled into an unmistakably evil grin

ok here it is by parts

Driving down the dirt road to the Weevil’s farm in Little Rock Minnesota, is a hardship for any car without four-wheel drive. So the thought of a school bus attempting the drive is rather ridiculous. No one lives within five miles of the farm, so carpooling is also out of the question for the teenage girl living with her parents at the house. Why someone would build a farm way out there of all places was unknown to the girl, but she did not have any say in the matter. The land is hard to get to and hard to work with, being picky and taking only the strongest seeds that are willing to grow. This makes it hard for the farm to survive, let alone thrive enough for a family to live off of.
The trees along the side of the road and through out the property are dead or dying from lack of nutrition in the soil. Only one tree appears to be living easily, that is the full-grown crab tree on the northeastern side of the house. The tree stands as tall as the wrap around porch, its leaves spread over the roof protectively. Its blossoms bloom a bright pink through out the season, lasting longer then a normal tree should.
A house stands a bit away from the road. It is an new house and kept very clean and neat. The white paint is kept clear and smooth and it has fresh new white curtains blowing out open windows. A new red oak door solidly stands behind a white screen door, it is brilliant and quite as it opens. The only sound coming from the house is the

loud bang of the screen door as Tera, the only child on the farm, rushes out of the building and down the gravel driveway.

She is late for school as usual, and she ran as fast as her pudgy body could carry her down the long driveway. She stopped once to look back at the house to see if her mother was actually going to come out and offer a ride, but the only thing she saw was the blooming crab tree. She turned to run back down the road when a glimmer caught her eye. Slowly she turned and saw the transparent figure of a small girl.
The girl appeared to be of about five or six years of age, with long blonde hair pulled into braided pig tails. She wore a black and white checkered dress that ended above the knees, and was styled in a 1950’s fashion which fanned out girlishly. Her socks were white with frills mostly hidden by black tap shoes. The girl had a Shirley Temple look about her that made Tera smile despite the fact that she could see right through the child.
Tera gasped and looked at her watch. The bus had left five minutes ago and she would never make it to school on time. She wondered what she was going to do when a cold tug on her shirt caught her attention. She looked down to see the small girl standing next to her and she fell back with a yelp. How in the world did she get next to her so fast and so quietly. She didn’t even hear a sound of approaching footsteps.
The girl smiled at Tera and pulled on her hand “I’m sorry I made you miss your bus” she said her voice clear and bright. “But if you want, you can play with me today,” Tera usually afraid of the small girl’s kind nodded. “Ok, but only as long as we go out in the fields.” she felt as if she were in a trance as she fallowed the child around the house to the unused field.

Tera was in a strange trancelike state on the way to the field, and upon reaching its edge she shook her head wondering how in the world she got there. She looked down to find that the strange girl had left her side to run through the dead grass of the field. Tera fallowed at a slower pace, the tall grass coming up to her armpits as she walked through it like water.

This was her favorite place on the farm, it was quiet and peaceful, unlike home. At home her mother constantly yelled and ridiculed her for acting childish, there was never a moment when her mother didn’t look at Tera with disapproving eyes. Tera closed her eyes as a warm wind hit her face rustling the grass. She loved the soft sound it made as the grass danced with the wind.
She finally reached the large rock in the middle of the field. The girl was already sitting on top of it looking at the clouds. Tera would have a bit more trouble being a short chubby girl with no athleticism in her body. First she tried throwing up her backpack full of books, it took her about four tries before it hit the top of the rock with a dull thud. Then she tied back her short hair so she could clamor up after it. This also took a few tries but eventually after minutes of grunting and struggle she made it up, panting and out of breath.
She rested on top of the rock for a minute or two before looking at the strange ghost girl, “Who are you?” she asked finally the question bugging her to no end.
“I’m Sadie,” she answered with a happy smile, “Sadie Moorwick of Massachusetts” she added to be more specific.
Tera paused with her next question, Her ‘gift’ of seeing ghosts was not what she

wanted, and she’d hate to find that she was right in thinking this girl was one of them. Taking a deep breath she pushed out the unwanted question, “You’re one of them aren’t you?” she asked, “You’re a ghost.” she looked over at the little girl, who was slightly see through in the sunlight.
“yup!” was the oddly happy reply from the child, “I died exactly fifty years ago today” she said it as if it where her birthday, something to celebrate.

Tera shook her head not understanding the girls happy nature, and took out a pad of paper and pencil. If this ghost was different then the others then she would have nothing to fear, and could write in her diary while she waited for the right time to go home. She didn’t know that Sadie really was trying to help her by being her friend, but Sadie being an old ghost despite dying at the age of five, didn’t want to scare the girl.
Slowly the sun rose higher and higher until it was well past noon. Tera was bored and hungry, not having any lunch to eat and having missed breakfast. Sadie had left a while ago, while Tera took a nap in the warm sun and now she was alone. Tera looked down at her watched and decided now would be an appropriate time to head for home. She tossed her bag down to the ground and fallowed after it stumbling a bit from the fall.
Tera took one look across the field before she started to walk away, her eyes widened in fear and she turned and ran back home with all the quickness she could muster.
Outside the forest on the edge of the field a ghost, one she knew was not nice like Sadie, stood watching Tera intently. His appearance was gruesome and morbid and it made Tera shudder in fear as she ran from the sight. She could not see the grin that grew across his face as she ran back home.

Tera got home quickly, and groaned inwardly when she saw that her mother was home early from what ever event she was participating in this week. She stepped through the front door calling, “Mother I’m home,” formally. The clank of dishes in the kitchen was not a good sign. Mother only did dishes when she was angry, usually it was Tera’s job.
Tera eased into the kitchen “mother?” she called looking at the stooped and angry form of Vivian Weevil. “Is every thing ok?”
PostPosted: Fri Oct 19, 2007 4:15 pm

“No, Tera its not” her mother spun and looked at her daughter angrily. “I was pulled out of the bake sale event by a phone call.” she said accusingly, “and you’ll never guess who it was”
“W-who?” stammered Tera having a bad feeling she knew where this was going.
“It was your school,” her mother said sitting down at the kitchen table and pointing to the other seat, “sit, now.” she commanded leaving no room for argument as Tera did as she was told, silently trying not to anger her mother more.
“I can’t believe you would skip school Tera” her mother said accusingly her cool eyes taking in everything about the girl.
“Mother I didn’t skip, I missed the bus and had no way to get there” she said trying to explain with out mentioning ghosts.
“That is no excuse” she snapped quickly. “If you miss the bus it is your responsibility to find another way, not take the day off.”
“I’m sorry mother,” Tera said her voice soft and small, “I wont skip again,” she was tired of fighting and it showed in her voice, which was filled with defeat.
“I am not upset about you skipping Tera; I am upset that my own daughter could do something so immature and childish. Do you know how that looks to everyone else?” Her voice remained cool and unemotional as she spoke to Tera.
“That’s all you care about mom!” Tera forgot her formal name for her mother as she cried out, “All you care about is how you look to others! You don’t care if I’m made fun of at school, or if I have problems I need help with,” tears were welling up in her eyes as she talked.
“If you have problems my dear, it’s your own fault and you must solve them on your won. I will not coddle you.”

“…I am not asking you to do that mom. I just want someone to talk to.” Tera’s voice had calmed down, but she still used the informal name for her mother. “I need to know that I’m no the only living person here. You and father are deader than ghosts at the cemetery.”
Her mother pursed her lips at the mention of the supernatural, “we are not ghosts Tera, and there is no such thing. Also, you will call me mother. You are no longer a child to be using such childish names.”
“Says you,” Tera muttered as she slouched in her chair her arms crossed over her chest as she sulked.
“Do not talk back to me Tera,” her mother’s voice was filled with anger and warning, “I will not be spoken to in that tone or way in my house.”
“It’s not your house, dad bought it,” Tera retorted angrily before she realized what she was doing.

“That is it!” her mother stood and walked around the table. “I have told you time and time again! I will not be spoken to that way,” she grabbed the now frightened girls’ hand pulling her from the chair.
“NO! Mother I’m sorry, please don’t!” Tera was scared now, her voice laced with the fear in her heart. She knew this would happen, yet she ignored the signs and provoked her mother anyway’ now it was time for the closest.
She struggled desperately as her mother pulled her by her hair towards the dark closet in the second story bedroom. The sounds coming from her closed mouth were like the wails of the prisoners trapped in Hades’ underworld. She struggled with all the strength her plump body could provide, but it proved to be in vain. Soon she was in the shadowed closest, her mother closing the door slowly, as if to create an air of suspense for the invisible viewers. The dull click of the lock and disappearance of all light put a sense of fear in her so strong it could have crushed a diamond.
