Avery sat at his desk, swinging his legs under the chair in his usual excess of energy. He'd finished his chores in record time, including his homework, and now he had almost a whole day to do whatever he wanted.
Usually, this was a good thing. Today, however... it just meant he was bored. He fiddled with some things on his desk, almost knocking a stack of papers over, and as he caught it, a picture slid out and landed on the ground.
It was an oldish picture, and though he didn't remember when it was taken, he knew the people in it. He picked it up and for a rare moment, was still.
Colette... and Spiro... I wonder how they're doing? he thought, and felt a little guilty. They were his best friends, and he didn't even know what was going on with them the last several months.
Ever since he'd moved out here with his family, into the boonies, it was so hard to get back into town... he'd even had to switch schools. The house was bigger, sure, and he got his own room, but he missed his friends.
He grimaced, and chewed on a dirty fingernail for a moment, trying to remember their phone numbers. The decision to call them had been made with his usual impulsiveness; no thought was given to if they even wanted him to call anymore, after being abandoned for so long. He was sure they did, and so he would.
He scribbled a couple numbers down, and frowned at them. "Are these even right? Gah! Well, I guess the worst that can happen is a wrong number. Okay!" he said, and ran into the hallway to grab the phone. Rime refused to get the kids cell phones until they were at least old enough to drive, and wouldn't discuss the matter further.
Taking it back into his room, he dialed the first number on the list, that of the shy, reserved boy he'd always tried to pull out of his shell. It was the bigger risk of the two. He was sure Colette would be happy to hear from him, and if Spiro was angry, well... Avery thought he could use a pick me up.
The ring sounded, and Avery waited impatiently, his foot taking up a tapping rhythm on the baseboard of his bed.
