Do you go to local comic book stores or do you flock to Borders and the like?

Personally I shop at Geko's Books (on Waialae Ave. for those on Oahu). I can walk to it from my house/college. I like to go to Jewels or Juice which is right next store and get a smoothie then wonder around in Gekos for a while. xd

I'll go to Borders or some other place to get comics if I find that Geckos or Toys and Joys (Which is across the street) don't have what I'm looking for, which has only happened twice, I'll go else where.

On the Big Island though, Borders is kinda all that can be had so I kinda have to shop there when in Kona.

I hit up Comic Kings. I like it because it's a manga free zone and I don't have to deal with retard manga-philes like I do at bookstores. The store isn't huge, but they take pretty good care of me. There's a little place around the corner from there that has great gyros so if i have time i go there to eat after grabbing my books.

Gah- isn't it awesome to have a cool little place to hang out after you get your books?! By Geckos there is this local coffee house called Coffee Talk and I sit in there and read a lot of the time. It's really fun in a way in all it's simplicity; just sitting and reading while eating and drinking. heart

Gawd. I can say I get pretty irked when I do go to Borders and a ton of people are clogging up the comic book isles. I've done it myself in my younger days but in my defense back then the manga section in Kona only had two shelfs out of a whole row which only held Ranma 1/2, Mai the Psychic Girl, Akira, and Sailor Moon- all in reversed print and with translated sound effects (which WTF why did they stop doing that?) and thus cost 15 bucks at the cheapest but obviously Akira cost more. Now? ********' like 4 full rows of manga. All of whose floors are covered with people who won't move because they don't know your trying to look through them because they are reading a comic rather then buying it and are not aware of you. Its not a end of the world situation but it's a bit of a pet peeve, you know? gonk

There's a comic shop in Hilo pretty much in the back room of a Subway. It's like open two days per week...but if you're looking for indy novels that's the only place to go on island.

Other then that I hit up borders or amazon.com

I'm an a*****e when it comes to shopping at Borders. I have no problem with reaching through you if you're in my way. I mean if you're looking, I'm cool...I'll wait...but if you're just sitting against the shelf reading you've officially irritated me. This one time I grabbed this 14 year old kid by the shirt, pulled him to his feet, and gently sent him on his way.

What really irks me though is when kids grab a manga and sit against the comics like no one wants to get to Western Works stare

Oh God yes. Red's heard my tirades on this and me snapping a moron manga-philes. "No, that manga does not sound cool. It sounds like something a perverted 12 year old would come up with. I am as interested in reading that as you seem to be interested in eating properly and exercizing. You are the reason no one likes you. It's not that they don't 'get it'. They do 'get it' and 'it' sucks. Sod off." Not a huge fan of Borders due to pushy sales staff at the local ones. "No, I don't want your e-mails clogging up my inbox. I barely shop here. I don't need a membership. Stop looking at me like that."

Yes, both of those quotes have left my lips. No, I'm not sorry.

I actually love Border e-mail, since it's usually accompanied by a $5 reward. Then again I gave them my business/spam address so my personal account isn't spammed.

You know where I hate shopping though; Macys. They are always trying to sign me up for a freaking credit card...now if it was a reward card I might be interested...but this is a credit card, and Moki has sworn off the use of credit.

Great googly-moogly yes! I tell infamous story now.

I don't know if this has happened to anyone else but it's happened to me several times. Maybe it's because I look like I'm 12, maybe its because my body gives off a particular scent that the people I'm about to describe find alluring: but I always run into "egear to corrupt kid". I can't think of a better term, but basically this is some kid to spends most of their free time reading manga at Borders and really wants other people to too. With that set, here is the plot:

Sin City
just came out in theaters and with it new editions of the comics, right? Right. I wanna go get Family Values 'cause that's one I haven't read and being in Kona had not access to read prior. I wander to Borders and start lookin' for it in the comics section. Now, I'm looking directly at the Western comics area. I'm not even wandering into the Japanese comics and not making eye contact with any of the squatters. Randomly, before I can even really look, a kid eager to help/corrupt me shuffles over. Offers to help me find what I'm looking for because "I've read almost every manga here." In my subtle way I tell him I'm looking for a title called Sin City by Frank Miller, which I think would be noticeably not a Japanese name and I hoped he'd note I was facing the Western comics shelf and thus be like "Oh." No such luck, Mr. eager dives into the manga searching like a cracked out librarian, like the faster he finds it the more impressed I'd be. I let him go do whatever. Comes back, says he can't find it but has a stack of manga I should read. I was like "... What are you?" If I want a recommendation or was thinking out loud for what I should read, OK. But shoving a bunch of random comics in my hand without a.) me wanting it b.) hearing what type of comics I like just because you want to get people to read manga as much as you do? Or something? I don't even know the motivation there. Spaz.

Granted, I've met a few interesting and pretty neat people in the manga section as well- so it's just a wild card. Over all though I prefer the usual manga crowd at my local comic book store then I do the ones at Borders. 'cause they can't take the comics outta the plastic. They gotta know what the want and buy it if they want to read it. And they are fine with this, they understand the reason for the plastic. It's a thrilling little group too, very nice and funny.

lol, I have the same problem...although I'm mistaken for 16 instead of 12. No one has ever "offered to help" me in Borders since I think I put out this "I don't need help, damn it" vibe but it's like I have 'let's be friends' tattooed on my forehead. Every time I go to Borders someone wants to chat, and like I've said many times; I'm friendly, so I talk back >.< which is always a problem...because it's like giving food to a stray dog, speak and they never leave.

I did meet this freaking cool Tai girl that way though. Anyone who's willing to play Ninja after knowing a guy for less then an hour...is awesome.

How does one play ninja? Is it like hide and seek but no one is seeking? O_o

It's hide and seek, only with swords and you try to kill each other.

In a book store yesterday, I'm looking over the graphic novels. "Helpful" dude looks at me and says, "The Manga is on the next aisle."

I smile, "Which explains why I'm in this one." I pull out a Green Lantern trade to look through.

"Why read that when Manga is SO much better?"

"Yes, being read from right to left is a clear sign on superiority. I don't think I'm quite up for such high-brow reading material. I'll stick with these."

Dude disappears. Soon reappears with a couple of books. "Here, these are good if you're just starting out reading Manga."

I glare. "Sarcasm is completely lost on you, isn't it."

"What?"

"What have you brought me?" I snatched the books from his hand. He smiled as if he had just won me over. "Let's see, Naruto. A fighting manga where the character's sole motivation is to become stronger and prove himself to everyone."

"You've read it."

"I don't have to. The main character's motivation in nearly every fighting manga is the same. Ooo, Ninjas." I toss the book back at him. "I was around for the first ninja fad. Sho Kosugi could kick this kid's a**. Also, most ninja were women and most of then were nearly worthless in a fight. What else did you bring? One Piece?"

"It's got pirates."

"Pirates, eh. So they took thieves, rapists and murderers, cutsied them up and are shovelling this dreck upon the masses?"

I toss the second book back at him.

"But..."

"No."

"It's..."

"No it's not." I pull a Fables trade from the racks. "This is what good storytelling is. Go learn something."

Don't know if he read it. I thought for a second he was going to cry.

Green Lantern is the s**t, Kyle Rayner is still my favorite.

Hide your face (via cloth, shirt, hood, what-have-you), run around, sticking to the shadows, and assassinate people...sometimes; killing your fellow ninjas is necessary.

And Jaeger proves once again he can make men cry.

I've had something like that happen to me, where some one was like "Why Read that?" 'that' in context was Y: The Last Man and they where holding a copy of Naruto and I wanted to say "Because it has interesting social commentary with characters and plot that actually develop," but went with "I read manga too." 'Cause I'm a sissy without my internet to hide me. I ADMIT IT.

I don't read any Green Lantern but OMG Fables. heart

Ahhhh... Is this usually done in Borders or some other store?

The poor b*****d caught me after I had watched several House episodes. He never had a prayer.

I'm playing some serious catch-up on the Sinestro Wars stuff with GL. I had dropped the book because Hal Jordan bores me. And yes indeed Kyle Rayner rules.

Fables makes me smile with every trade I buy, and as for hiding behind the internet. Don't feel bad, you're not a sissy. Keep in mind I'm 6'1" and can llok intimidating when need be. I'm generally the toughest guy in the bookstore. xp
