I don't anticipate needing many rules, so we'll get through the unpleasent stuff pretty quickly.

1. Be respectful. You can expect the same from your guildmates, regardless of whether they're more or less experienced than you are.

2. Do your best to use appropriate spelling and grammar. We all make mistakes, but chatspeak and phonetics isn't an effective communicator, unless you're in a rush and texting your best friend from your cell phone.

And that about covers it, I think.

So, anyway, why are we here? Is it an attempt to impress our values on other people? Is it to gossip about the politics of the Extended Discussion? Is it to cut-and-paste preformulated responses to common debates?

Nope. This guild is pretty much a small encyclopedia of things it pays to know in the ED: what threads already exist on controversial topics, how to cite with maximum efficiency, how to keep your posts free of fallacies- all that fun stuff will be covered. You can use the guild as a place to ask questions, or as an occasional reference guide- we're all after the same thing here; encouraging engaging and informative debate in the Extended Discussion.

So now that that's out of the way, introduce yourselves- a few sentences or a paragraph will do, with whatever information you feel like disclosing in it.

I'm Wishbone, call me Wish, or something. I particularly enjoy debate on human sexuality, social justice, and environmental solutions- my wider interests lie in psychology, anthropology, literature, baking, camping, and LARPing. Right now, I'm working on a book by the Dalai Lama (who is brilliant), and just finished up Beloved, by Toni Morrison. I would recommend The Bluest Eye, out of any of her works- it's more accessible, with a stronger focus. I have trouble with Iris Murdoch, I can't handle math, and I don't eat breakfast on weekdays.

I'm actually female, but it's not usually relevent one way or the other. I'm also fairly young, but that's not of much consequence, either. I'm scared of driving, I don't have many friends (though I'm not really disliked), I enjoy lecture notes (no, really), and I really wish I was less lazy, so that I could learn another language. Spanish would be great, though I've only ever taken French and Latin.

Your turn!

Cougar Trollhammer Draven

PostPosted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 11:24 pm

Yo. Cougar Xerxes "Trollhammer" Draven. I'm heavily involved in debates about sexuality, and abortion, and I can be seen infrequently in Morality and Religion and Sociology and Psychology, doing my thing.

I listen to music almost incessantly, and I have an issue about people not confronting me directly.

In ED, I have earned the "Trollhammer" moniker, and I am generally the tank in debates. I am not often nice, but I will be here, because Wishy demands/asks it.

I read a lot, usually Stephen King, but I do stray for a bit of other, intellectual work. I'm currently slowly working my way through Wittgenstein's Tractatus, and I'm going to work my way through some Lovecraft in a few days.

I'm a math geek, and will often define things in terms of numbers.

I watch a lot of CBS prime time television, and play a lot of classic video games. My personal favorites are Wolfenstein 3D and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.

I'm Poindextra. Also known as Dex, Dexie, Pixie, and many other interchangeable formations of my username and actual name (which I'm not disclosing, so suck it.)

So Narcissism doesn't jive with me, and I refuse to spew about myself for longer than necessary. But in the long run, I'll end up having to do it anyway.

SO FINE. scream

I'm a Forensic Science major at the University of Windsor, pondering the notion of a minor in Biochemistry to help boost my potential to be a toxicologist. I'm an avid believer in speaking one's mind, as long as the opinion is backed by sound reasoning (and not necessarily fact.) Random factoid, I'm mulling over the notion of obtaining a firearms license. Ironic, because I'm one of the least violent people you'll ever meet, but I'm developing a hard-on for heavy artillery (and that does not mean I have any intention of aiming it at someone or harming anything.)

As far as ED goes, I'm not there much anymore. However, I am responsible for this thread, and this thread, and this thread, as well as a preliminary ED directory that I conveniently cannot link you to at this time. I refuse to step in ED most days, but if anyone has questions, I'd be more than happy to answer PMs, and if requested I can provide you with alternate contact information for speedier responses. My current intellectual affiliations are in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Evolution, Anthropology, Shakespeare, History (Primarily from Ancient Greece to the Victorian Era, and a tad bit of 20th Century), Music (Theory and Study), Literature, and Dramatic Art.

And for a basic idea of how I roll, consult My rant about the Canadian education system.

If I missed something, too bad.

Ah, thank you wish for the invite.

For my introduction..

I am Evilsiletto - from what i've read it means a sharp blade -- usually small.

I have no nickname for myself, and have yet to gain one either from friends or fellow Gaians.

Yes, i'm truely gay.. But that doesn't deter me from speaking my mind about things.

My favorite reads are from Stephen King, also from my young age.. R.L Stine.
And reading up on religion and many other things, History though.. I love reading alot.

I think that's about all...

Well, I have to say I'm tickled by the invite. Thanks.

My profile has a lot about me. I'll copy that so that I don't forget anything. I doubt there's anything in it that you can't find out by reading my posts.

I'm the 35 year old mom of two boys (11 year old and a 4 year old), step mom to Khunn's children, and expecting another baby any day now! The 'step' kids aren't always with us, but we love them all.

I am traditional:
I dress modestly
I cook and decorate
I love being a full-time, stay-at-home mom
I collect vintage teacups, old cookbooks, and aprons
I do thread crochet
I own thousands of books, mostly non-fiction
I am not the head of my household

I am non-traditional:
I am active in BDSM
I am masochistic and submissive
I am sadistic and dominant, too ...
I have Dissociative Disorder
I am polyamorous
I am bisexual
I am a Fox furry
I believe in 24/7 babywearing for the first nine months
I homebirth with midwives
I breastfeed, and I don't buy baby food
I homeschool

Rose Demon Axel

Dapper Dabbler

PostPosted: Sat Oct 06, 2007 6:34 am

Hello, my name is Rose Demon Axel, but if you don't want to type that out, please just call me Axel.

I suppose that the topic I am the most at home in debating about is homosexuality. I am beginning to believe that I might be bisexual. My favorite books are mostly in the fantasy genre, as I feel that those are the most open to different kinds of relationships. My favorite authors are JRR Tolkien and Mercedes Lackey.

I am not very good at math and sciences involving math, as English and art are my main focus. I tend to look at things more deeply than many people that I know, even though I don't always share my opinions.

When I am insulted by someone, particularly by someone that I don't know, I tend to become aggressive and defiant.

Well, I think that's all about me. Next?

PROPER GRAMMAR? sad

ok wish me luck guys i haven't used anything but chatspeak in years

The name is Rachelle, but if you forget it, you can call me Chicken, Chix, Poppy, ChixPop, whatever you please~

I've been on Gaia since early '05. I'm a regular in the General Discussion, so I don't know why I was invited (but I'm honored, none the less. redface )

I'm young but look and act a lot older than I really am. Usually when I tell people my age, they think less of me. My birthday is coming up soon though. ;P

English is my passion, and I love to read. Right now I'm rereading Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita.
History is pretty great too. <3

I'm very arrogant and refuse to deny that I'm amazing in every way possible. I'd consider myself a good debater because I can see both sides to an argument, but there's always room for improvement.

I'm not into politics or religion, but I relate most to the Libertarian Party and LaVeyan Satanism.

I've recovered several mental illnesses and eating disorders. My life is still run by bottles and bottles of pills, but I'm happy with myself for the first time in my life. :}

OH AND I'M AN AWFUL SPELLER. redface

My name is Blair. I'm uhh...well, I'm a strong believer in human potential so when people say "I'm not very good at math" I tend to think someone's teacher screwed up somewhere around 3rd grade and subsequently everything flew over their head...

I'm very self-centered and pragmatic; pretty much everything I'm interested in can be tied down into a network of, "What do I want? What are the different ways I can get it? Which ones impact my other desires, and how?" etc.

That said, my interests range from psychology to sociology to language to mathematics to physics to biology to music to video games to ...well, it would probably be easier to list things that I'm not interested in:
-spectator sports
-celebrity gossip
-tedium
...then again, it seems that the first two can easily tie into the third, so for now, I can simply say tautologically: boring things are the only things that bore me smile

I have written a few topics in the ED, but only one relates to this guild, and I'm fairly certain it is the reason I was invited:
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/extended-discussion/how-to-debate-effectively-1-ad-hominem-what-it-is-and-isn-t/t.33035531_1/

Umm...yeah. I guess my hobby is to analyze things until there is nothing left. Thus, tendency to tl;dr or be told "you're thinking too much".

Anyway, that's me as I relate to this guild, I guess. smile

Hi. I'm Saeric and I refuse to tell you my real name because the ***** clowns will come for me. I'm actually a girl, which rarely matters at all, and straight as a board, which matters even less.

I'm more of a lurker than an actual reg poster, but I've been trying to post more often recently. Nothing is a better way of filling up tedium than reading the Abortion Debate Thread from start to finish. ^^

I have pretty strict ideas and justifications for my moral, political, and religious values, but I am willing to admit I'm wrong (only faced with proof, of course). These values are rare for the place where I live, but apparently not very uncommon on Gaia at all. I'd probably call myself a LaVeyan Satanist if it wasn't for the ridiculous name. Debating is something I'm new to, so this guild and it's resources will assist me greatly.

Hmmm... what else? Oh, I'm a spelling nazi. Grammar doesn't bug me as much. I'm currently rereading Asimov's robot novels and trying to write some sci-fi/horror or my own, utterly failing on the latter.

I am rather honored to be invited here, thanks Wish.

As can be seen, I am DeathWyrmNexus or DWN for short and DW to my close friends. I basically use the same username wherever I am lurking, so if you see it, there is a decent chance that there is a long haired 25/soon to be 26 year old white guy with a 3 year old son, a fiancee' called Lynn Nexus, and a baby on the way. Neat coincidence eh?

I am definitely intrigued by this guild and hope I can actually contribute. I try to think from everybody's perspective in a debate but I do have my strong opinions which sometimes lead me forward without proper thinking and too much obstinence. Actually I owe Iron Sole a measure of thanks for a grievous error I made in his thread, just hope I can properly think that out in the future.

However, I am strong believer in the Darwin Awards ideal and the ability of weird things to happen. Hence, my growing Zombie thread on the ED.

Oddly enough, Blair wasn't aware of it but I like his Debate Etiquette thread enough where I was going to actually talk to him about making a Master Thread for it when he got all the threads done, or close to done, complete with links and such. Though it seems that this guild make make the need for it slightly smaller.

Anywho, I am interested in D&D, Magic the Gathering, good movies, etc, etc. Nothing special.

Uh. I'll assume I was invited to contribute, not to read. If so, I'm certainly flattered! =D

I'm [Feminition.], but usually people call me Fem.

I happen to be extremely young, as I have just turned fourteen, so I can't quite go over some topics as I have not encountered such a situation.

Luckily, with that current 'thing', I may have less of a bias based on experience.

I was born in Russia, and everyone I am related to was born in Russia, but I left at one year old.

I'm an extreme liberal, though I often agree with other political ideas if they make sense.

I know I have quite a bit of a lean toward having crushes toward girls, so I would say I would be at least bisexual.

What I'm rather good at? I'm quite lovely at trying to imagine myself in a situation the other person is in- well, excluding religion. I'm a hardcore atheist, raised by true agnostics.

I also am good at finding sources, but it's difficult without a slight bias.

I'm actually rather confused why I was invited at all- I generally act like quite a jackass on some occasions on the ED.
