I'm curious as to why we choose to call ourselves Therians. Even if we never spoke a word to anyone about it our entire lives, who and what we are doesn't change. So yes, that's great, but why?

I'm a little confused about your question. Could you, maybe, clarify it a little?

I'm asking others why it is so important that we identify ourselves as therians, why we feel the need for a label in the first place.

Perhaps it is because we find comfort in being a part of a group. Everyone needs to feel like they belong somewhere or else they will become lonely, or 'lost.' We are different. We don't have many people we can confide in that will understand or sympathize with our... therian-ess? XD So, we call ourselves therians; it gives us a group identity, or a unity, of people who can truly understand us... or at least this part of ourselves.
And hi everyone ^_^ I haven't been active for a long time. I guess I'm back? XD I'll try to be more active but highschool has been very demanding lately. xp I'm not sure if anyone remembers me.... actually I highly doubt it ^_^' I read threads much more often than I post in them lol xd

because we sound a lot less crazy when we say "therian" than when we say "people who have animal spirits", imho.

I have another theory, not substantiated by anything so elegant as proof but founded on my own hairbrained thoughts, so take it as you will.
The conscious decision to call ourselves Therian came from the general need to identify ourselves as something solid. Giving a movement a name gives it power, no force in our history has ever motivated without a name because to not have something to call it means it has no significance to be noticed. In the earliest days we tended more towards the word "weres" which worked for a time, but had too much negative meaning in the common hollywood media. Werewolves being commonly portrayed as a disease to be treated or a monster to be feared meant we needed something different.
If you look up Therianthropy, you'll find that it refers to humanity changing into an animal, often used in conjunction with such stories as the old Egyptian gods and many classic Were tales (Therianthropy takes into account the fact that not all those of the shifting or the animalistic bend are necessarily lupine in nature). Therian is just a shortened, singular, version of that. The need to identify ourselves as such, as a Therian, could also stem from the general needs of the pack mentality. We can't deny that the need for a pack is important to us and that by giving ourselves one generally accepted name, we've given ourselves a sort of global "pack" in which we can feel like family.
We are all Therian, no matter our phenotype. It's a solidarity that I think we need
