Two weeks… It had officially been two weeks since Kamui’s life had been changed forever. Changed in the worst way possible. For two weeks, he’d listlessly wandered around this bustling world with its’ forests of concrete buildings, staring at the flocks of humans who always seemed to be in a rush. For two weeks, he found himself come back to the very spot that Seishirou had led his twin away, wallowing in the last words Subaru spoke to him. And for two weeks, Kamui slowly let himself deteriorate from the inside out, not even bothering to find proper clothes or currency for this world, or a place to sleep. Even the will to hunt for any meals was as nonexistent as Subaru’s presence was in this world. The vampire was completely hollow inside, unsure of what to do, where to go, or why he even bothered continuing on like this.
After his daily visit to that fateful abandoned construction site as if he was mourning the grave of his late lover, Kamui found his feet leading him towards a secluded little alleyway where he would most likely be staying the night. Each day, his feet seemed to move a little slower and he seemed to sleep a little longer. He could only hope that one day he wouldn’t wake up at all, when he wouldn’t have to face the agony that was this emptiness inside him.
Sliding down onto the littered ground, Kamui drew his knees up to his chest and rested his arms over them. Dull violet eyes focused on a tiny piece of broken glass near his feet as he began to replay the last time he saw his brother over and over again in his mind until he would eventually become too weary to keep his eyes open anymore; the same routine as the day before that…and the day before that, and the day before that…

Fuuma really had to hand it to Yuuko this time. She had been giving him progressively more tedious tasks as time went on and the hunter assumed it was because she grew bored easily and the thought of sending him on a goose chase amused her for all of five minutes. Nevertheless, this one was genius. She always knew exactly where the item she asked him for was, though she’d never tell him, and this time he’d spent months already trying to track down the smallest of rings and nearing the end of his journey found out the owner had dropped it on the way home from work.
So here was Fuuma, the great treasure hunter, searching the sidewalks for an itty bitty silver thing.
He’d been at it for a good eight hours when he came upon a very familiar figure in a random alley along his path. The figure was so similar, and Fuuma had been thinking about it for so long, he couldn’t leave it be. Even if it was this dimension’s version… And not the one he really wanted to help.
Checking the ground as he approached the figure, Fuuma really only found garbage and as depressing as that was, the sheer feeling of… nothingness coming from the person before him was infinitely worse. He’d spend weeks searching the sidewalks if it meant he could change to happiness the look on this doppelganger’s face. Seeing Kamui like this, even if he didn’t really know this Kamui, was painful.
“Hey,” He began, squatting to look this Kamui—was that this one’s name?—in the face, “Are you alright?”

The vampire picked his head up to look at who would be the third person to address him ever since he arrived in this world. When it processed in his head who that familiar face belonged to, the faintest spark of emotion flickered in his eyes.
“F-Fuuma?” the vampire croaked, his own voice sounding foreign to him after not using it for so long and his last recollections of it desperately calling out Subaru’s name as he disappeared, “Fuuma…...Fuuma…..”
It’d been quite a while since they’d seen each other. The more he repeated the name, the more he seemed to recall about the man. But the memories stopped when the fact that Fuuma was Seishirou’s brother clicked in his brain and refused to let go. Kamui suddenly dropped his head straight down as if his neck stopped working while his shoulders began to tremble and ironically, the next sound to come out of Kamui’s mouth was undeniable laughter; humorless and bitter as it was.
“Do tell me….” Kamui began slowly, eerily, his eyes shadowed beneath his hair as he spoke, “How is your brother doing these days?”

“Kamui?” Needless to say, the hunter could hardly believe it. What were the odds, coming upon a Kamui he left behind again in another world? There were so many worlds, so many possibilities, places to go, even in one world there was a whole world to be separated by and yet while searching for a little silver ring, Fuuma found who he was looking for by chance.
But Kamui didn’t look half as elated as Fuuma felt. “My brother? I haven’t seen him for a very long time. A few worlds after Tokyo… he seemed fine and healthy but agitated, since then I couldn’t tell you.” It was truthful. There was no reason to lie to Kamui and in Fuuma’s mind, finding out what was wrong was so much more important than keeping an air of mystery about himself, right now. “But you shouldn’t care. So why do you? Where’s Subaru? Is h—“
He couldn’t. Well, he could. And Seishirou was just that good, after all. Fuuma knew it. But he couldn’t. Because the twins needed each other and to separate them would be a horrible thing. So he couldn’t, right?
The elation from before began to drain away and in its place spilled pity and a great sorrow. But he reminded himself this was too soon. Kamui hadn’t confirmed what he thought, yet. Subaru could just be inside another reservoir somewhere…

Kamui barked out another laugh when Fuuma paused. It was so obvious what the hunter was thinking and it made him feel that much more pathetic. The familiar phrase “nothing without Subaru” echoed through his head as he dropped his arms to his sides and his knees to the ground, slumping closer to the other man while he looked up at him with a strange smile.
“Do I really need to say it? I know you already know... Just look at me…” the vampire looked back down again while he lifted his arms and reached out to grab onto Fuuma’s coat, almost as if he was searching for some kind of support, something to hold onto while came to terms with this cruel reality, “It’s all so very obvious isn’t it? Why wouldn’t it be? I bet you knew how inevitable this was even without knowing anything about Subaru….and yet….why….”
The vampire trailed off after that, not sure if he was talking to Fuuma or himself anymore or if he was even being coherent. Somehow having someone there to talk to about it with made it both better and worse at the same time. He wanted to continue as much as he didn’t and stuck in his mental debate and shell-shock, Kamui remained silent, his only movement coming from his hands that tightened into the fabric of Fuuma’s coat.

Fuuma realized his first thoughts were correct. This wasn’t his Kamui. His Kamui was angry and active and protective and strong… This Kamui was lost and confused. So lost… The hunter had to wonder how his brother could do something like this to someone. But then, Seishirou probably wasn’t thinking about Kamui when he did what he did.
Kamui didn’t need the kind of comfort Fuuma could offer. Kamui needed a safe Subaru there with them and that was something Fuuma could not do. So it was more for himself, more to make sure Kamui was still… living, when he pulled Kamui into a firm, but gentle, hug.
“I did,” It wasn’t something he felt would make it better to confess at this time, but Kamui had… sort of asked so it was appropriate and polite to answer, “I knew.” But Fuuma would not linger on something so sad. Not when Kamui needed some obvious caring for, “You look awful. Where have you been staying? Have you eaten at all?”

The vampire easily fell into the hug, Easily because he didn’t have the will to put up any sort of resistance. At least the embrace wasn’t too objectionable. It was warm, comfortable….it reminded him of how Subaru used to sometimes hug him like this….
Kamui didn’t really pay attention to Fuuma’s concerned questions of his well-being. He was instead stuck on how easily Fuuma confirmed his suspicions, each of those four words twisting the knife further into his heart.
‘Even Fuuma knew…’ was the new thought to be put on infinite replay. Even Fuuma knew how futile his life’s efforts were. Even Fuuma knew that he never stood a chance against Seishirou. Even Fuuma knew that Subaru cared about Seishirou just the same, if not more than, Kamui and that nothing would come of standing in their way. And since Fuuma knew all of that, he must have known what a pathetic and delusional person Kamui really was.
What was the point of it all? What a waste of an existence… Fuuma must have known that too.
“So do me a favor,” Kamui eventually murmured against Fuuma’s chest as if he’d been talking to the hunter the whole time while he reached his arm around one of Fuuma’s legs and grabbed the gun he knew Fuuma kept holstered there, “And end it for me.”
Kamui was totally prepared for the consequences. He had been not even two days after Subaru left him. Sure he tried to take care of this himself a few times but sometimes being a self-regenerating vampire really had its’ disadvantages. He wouldn’t be able to do it on his own. But now Fuuma was here, and there really wasn’t any other person he could think of that deserved the honor of being responsible for his death like the hunter.
Picking himself up a bit, he titled his head up at Fuuma with such a miserable expression, yet hopeful if Fuuma actually decided to help him out. Pulling the gun out in front of their bodies, Kamui used his free hand to grab one of Fuuma’s and place it on what he now considered his ticket to paradise, helping him hold it up while he rested his forehead against the end of the barrel.
“This whole starving thing is taking too long anyway…”

Fuuma wasn’t sure what to make of this Kamui. He seemed completely dead except for the few words he muttered. And the hunter was, in all actuality, still trying to cope, himself, with the fact that such a strong person was reduced to… nothing. He was still waiting for a response to his questions when he felt the vampire’s hand creep around his leg; and he would have appreciated that had he not understood what the vampire was reaching for.
Did he even know what he was asking? Didn’t he understand Fuuma didn’t want him to die? Did the other seriously think Fuuma was aiming to kill every time he shot at Kamui’s feet way back in Tokyo? How much more obvious than bad aim did Fuuma need to be?
But then, Kamui wouldn’t care what Fuuma wanted. But he might care about… “Subaru wouldn’t want to see you like this. I’m sure Subaru didn’t mean for you to wither away when he left.” The hunter pulled the gun down at the same time as using his unoccupied hand to lift Kamui’s face so he could see him properly, “Subaru’s going to want to come back to a happy and healthy Kamui, so do me a favor…”
Lifting Kamui’s head a little higher, Fuuma bent his shoulders down and hooked Kamui’s chin at his neck, the side opposite the open street, then brought his hand up to pet Kamui’s hair and keep it in place should Kamui decide not to listen, “And drink.”

For a few moments, Kamui laid there motionless in the crook of Fuuma’s neck, further devastated and confused by Fuuma’s attempt to prolong his agony. Did Fuuma hate him that much? Did he enjoy seeing his “rival” being brought down so low? Kamui believed they had more respect for each other than that. Maybe he deserved this afterall...
But then Fuuma had mentioned Subaru wants which caused him to ball his fist up on Fuuma’s shoulder and clench his teeth as he ground out with constrained emotions.
“What Subaru wants….what Subaru wants. I’m sick of what Subaru wants. I spent my whole life trying to understand and give Subaru everything I thought he wanted. And yet the whole time….” The vampire exhaled a few shaky breathes over the skin that he was so close to, as if he was on the verge of tears even though he just didn’t possess the energy anymore to shed them, “……the whole time, he never wanted any of it from me. He never wanted me at all… He doesn’t care….he’s not ever going to come back….”

All Fuuma could really think about was how badly Kamui had been screwed over by all of this. Didn’t Subaru know what leaving Kamui would do and didn’t Seishirou understand how awful a thing it was to separate the twins? Fuuma, then, had to hand it to Kamui. It did, indeed, sound like they didn’t care.
Taking the time given to re-holster his gun while Kamui wasn’t thinking about it, Fuuma re-wrapped that arm around the other and apologized, “I’m sorry, Kamui. I knew Seishirou would catch you, but I didn’t realize he was this heartless. I didn’t realize Subaru was so selfish. I didn’t know it would end up like this.” And in his mind he continued, how could Subaru leave you, knowing you had no escape from this world without him? How could Subaru leave you knowing you spent so much time protecting him from the man he went away with? Did all of Kamui’s effort and pain really mean that little, in the end?
“I’m sorry,” He said, again, “But I don’t want you to die. And that’s selfish of me, but I’m going to take care of you, anyway.”

Kamui was torn. Torn between arguing the fact that there wasn’t anything worth Fuuma’s time to take care of….and taking in the fact that someone actually wanted to take care of him in the first place. Did Fuuma really mean that? Was he really going to look out for him? Protect him? Think about the things that Kamui wanted and act on them? ….Why would he do that?
At any other point in time, he probably would have scoffed at the idea, being too proud to let himself depend on anyone like that. But now…Kamui wasn’t sure what to think. After all, what was the point of allowing Fuuma to help him like that if what he’d been living his life for was never going to return?
“Why?” Kamui eventually whispered, ultimately deciding that he just needed more information to even start believing what Fuuma was trying to suggest, “Why won’t you let me die? Why…would you want to burden yourself with me?..”

“It’s not a burden,” Fuuma replied easily. It was an easy answer, after all. The easiest he’s had to give since this conversation began. He continued, “I told you, it’s selfish. I enjoyed those three years in Tokyo and I’ve wanted for a long time to have you around to play with, again. Sometimes treasure hunting is monotonous, you know.”
The hunter decided it was safe to leave Kamui’s head resting where it was and took his hand from Kamui’s hair to wrap around the vampire’s other side, “I won’t let you die because I want you around. But…” Fuuma wondered if he really had the ability to comfort Kamui. He just irritated the vampire, after all. Realizing the vast likelihood of failure before him, the hunter started mentally preparing himself for some form of rejection.
In the meantime, he hooked his chin over Kamui’s shoulder and turned his offering of blood into a tighter hug, “I don’t want to see you like this. This isn’t you. I want the you that will shoot me in the leg with a crossbow, not put my gun to your head. So I’m going to take care of you, until you want to kill me, again.”
…
Fuuma honestly had to stop and ponder what kind of person he was to want something like that. He just smiled at his foolishness and filed it away to think about, later, “Okay?”

Now Kamui may have been spiraling into an endless sea of misery and depression but that didn’t take away his ability to recognize the absurdity Fuuma had just presented him with. The vampire turned in the hopes of looking Fuuma in the eyes but with the hunter hooked over his shoulder, all that turning managed to do is direct his voice straight into Fuuma’s ear.
“You….are a strange one,” Kamui mumbled. That had to have been the first thing that Kamui had said in the last two weeks that wasn’t somehow laced with his laden sorrow. And so far it looked like it would have been the only thing as he continued,
“But you forget…I no longer have a need to kill you. I no longer have a need….for anything…”
Yet he still hadn’t pulled away from Fuuma. He still hadn’t flat out told the man “No” and he didn’t know why. Perhaps a small part of him was touched by what Fuuma had said. The vampire didn’t think he could recall a time that even Subaru showed him this much concern. Of course it was Subaru who needed the concern more than Kamui ever did, but still… something about the way Fuuma seemed so sincere about it all almost gave him the tiniest sliver of hope. Almost.
“What if…” Kamui began again as his doubts began to bubble up; a common occurrence whenever he got his hopes up no matter how small they were, “If you do bring me back to the point of wanting to kill you again…..are you going to leave me then too?...”
Kamui didn't know why the answer to that question would matter to him but somehow he just didn't think he'd be able to take it if Fuuma somehow deliberately abandoned him as well.

The hunter felt Kamui’s effort to turn and would have loosened his hold to let him if he didn’t feel the overpowering need to hold the vampire close in case he should crumple to the ground or bolt away… or something.
When Kamui began speaking into his ear, the unexpected combination of a silky voice, close proximity, his already complex feelings toward the vampire he hardly knew, and the fact that his tone held none of the melancholy emotions Subaru gave rise to made it very hard to process what was being said; but not impossible and when it finally clicked in the hunters mind, he chuckled at the truth of it.
And what came next almost triggered outright laughter, “Are you kidding? Here I am, talking about how much I want to have you back, and you think the moment you were I’d up and ditch you? What part of ‘treasure hunting is monotonous’ did you not get?”
And to drive the nail deeper, he continued, “And you can’t tell me all of your aggravation with me was Subaru-based. I know I’m more annoying than that. You’ll want to kill me, again. I’m sure.”
