To introduce this topic, I'd like to point out a piece which can be found in the appendices B&C:

Quote:
1482 - Death of Mistress Rose, wife of Master Samwise, on Midyear's Day. On September 22 Master Samwise rides out from Bag End. He comes to the Tower Hills, and is last seen by Elanor, to whom he gives the Red Book, afterwards kept by the Fairbairns. Among them the tradition is handed down from Elanor that Samwise passed the Towers and went to the Grey Havens, and passed over the Sea, last of the Ring-bearers.

I'm sorry for the depressing quote, but I can't help it wonder... If Frodo left with the last ship, how did Samwise Gamgee get to the other side?

We know Legolas and Gimli build their own boat, but that was after Aragorns' passing. The lifespan of Sam just isn't long anough to wait for them.

And we also know he can't swim lol

What do you think happened? Debate!

I do believe Sam left for the Gray Havens. I think the ship that Frodo took may not have been the last.

That ship was not the last. It was the last, but for the Noldor; Elrond, Galadriel and the remaining Noldor left Endor on it.

Celeborn left Middle-earth many years later to the Uttermost West. Not to mention Legolas and Gimli. So it can't have been the last.

Wow, great question.

Maybe it is one of those heresay tales, like "we'll never really know" because it is more whimsical and nostalgic not to know for sure. Not that the appendices don't say that he actually passed, only that Eleanor held that tradition.

Although I agree with Menegil, GreenInkling's idea is fascinating: perhaps that became a euphemism for death. Instead of 'he's in a better place,' one would say 'he passed into the West.'
