Well, it's basically in the name - what defines a UC Gundam is if it's part of the Gundam Project... The long name for FAZZ would be "Full Armor Double Zeta Gundam" and Z-Plus is a limited run version of the Zeta Gundam, so i'd class it as one too.

Well what technicly classifyes a gundam bieng a gunmdam is that it's armor is made out of some form of gundarium. If you follow that even a Rick Dias would qualify as a gundam. The gundam mark II wouldn't qualify since it is made out of Luna Titanium. I guess if it's head looks like the 0079 gundam and/or it has "gundam" in its name, then it qualifys unless otherwise stated.

If it was a GUNDAM PROJECT mobile suit, it's a Gundam.

What I meant was that a person could consider a MS to be a Gundam by what it was made out of. That would be really wierd and all, but it is one way of looking at it. I personaly do not use that method, its all in the name to me. Besides, I don't think anyone would consider a Kapool to be a Gundam just because it's made out of Gundarium. I don't at least.

Armor does not make it a gundam ( the Seed gundams dont have a specified material, just written as "unknown")

If it was a GUNDAM PROJECT mobile suit, it's a Gundam. Wrong. A Gundam in the Universal Century is defined as such simply because of its name and its appearance. Take, for example, the RX-78-2 Gundam. The name of the project it was developed under was Operation V. It was made out of Luna Titanium Alloy (it was only after the Gundam's success that the armor was renamed "Gundarium"). It was simply called the Gundam because... it was. There's no other explanation to it. Another great case is in point is the F91. It was called the "Gundam" F91 because Acting-Captain Leahlee Edaberry said, "Hey! There were Mobile Suits a long time ago that looked like this one! They were called 'Gundams'. We'll codename this the 'Gundam F91'!" The only "Gundam Project" was the project that developed the three Gundam units in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. As for the Gundams of AC... The Gundam Official Glossary on 'Gundams' in AC An advanced mobile suit made entirely from Gundanium alloy, from which it derives it name. Thanks to its Gundanium construction, a Gundam is not only virtually indestructible, but is also invisible to radar and thus can only be detected at close range. Five Gundams were created by rebel space colonists for use in Operation Meteor, with firepower and performance far surpassing that of the Alliance's mass-produced mobile suits. (Emphasis added.)

Eac part of Project V was in its own right a project. During the one year war, 8 "Gundam Frames" were made upon which Gundams could be assembled. This was the true face of the original Gundam Project. Thus, Gundams built on these frames, and any subsequent Gundam class built on new frames fall under the research of a Gundam project. THAT is what defines a Gundam.

The development projects that create "Gundams" often also create other Mobile Suits! Simply generalizing them as "Gundam Projects" is inaccurate! A Gundam is a Gundam because it is identified as such in official material.

A Gundam is a Gundam because it is identified as such in official material. Each and every mobile suit falls under it's own project by rights. The people who made a Guntank might not know much about the people working on GM, other than the fact they use a similar cockpit. thus, as Project V was the name of the military operation for three mobile suit projects, one of which had a Gundam, it would be a Gundam Project. Think about it. If you make 8 frames to progress a design, Is that a project or a "just for shits n giggles"? Sounds like someone's spending money, planning, and suchlike. It is definitely a project. There weren't 8 Guntank frames made. But there were 8 for Gundam. 3 of which were RX-78-2 (post upgrade, the three started life as -1's)

Actually, all 8 of those "Gundam Frames" started out as RX-78-1s. Whether all of them were assembled or not before becoming other units is highly debatable. This chart will show show you: Rei Murasame on GOUF Side7RX-78-1 Unit 1 ----> RX-78-2 ----> Destroyed, becomes FA-78-1 [Concept Only] (Jaburo) ----> FA-78-2 (Jaburo) RX-78-1 Unit 2 ----> RX-78-2 (White Base) ----> RX-78-2 w/ Magnetic Coating (White Base) RX-78-1 Unit 3 ----> RX-78-2 ----> Destroyed, becomes RX-78-3 (Jaburo) JaburoRX-78-NT1 (Augusta > Arctic Circle > Grey Phantom > Libot) RX-78-1 Unit 4 ----> RX-78-4 (Augusta > Thouroughbred) ----> RX-78-4Bst (Thoroughbred) RX-78-1 Unit 5 ----> RX-78-5 (Augusta > Thoroughbred) ----> RX-78-5Bst (Thoroughbred) RX-78-1 Unit 6 ----> RX-78-6 (Jaburo > Blanc Rival > California) RX-78-1 Spare Production Parts ----> RX-79[G] x12 Units. (Kojima Battalion) ----> RX-79[G]Ez-8 x1 Unit. (Kojima Batallion) RX-78-1 Spare Production Parts ----> RX-79BD Units 1, 2, 3. RX-78-1 Spare Production Parts ----> RX-79 x5, Unknown Configurations. RX-78XX x3 (Albatross Base) ----> MIA RX-78-7 [Incomplete] ----> FA-78-3 [Not Assembled] ----> FHA-78-3 [Not Assembled] RX-78-8 [Plans Lost Forever] That chart was checked over by Gundam Official webmaster Mark Simmons, so I'd say it's pretty accurate. The fact is, a "Gundam Project" is your name for the development of a Gundam Mobile Suit. It's obviously a "Gundam Project" if the product is a Gundam! It's like the question: "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" Is it called a Gundam while it is being developed or does that name come afterword? But how do we know what is a Gundam and what isn't? Official sources, such as the various series themselves or the model kit manuals. That is what makes a "Gundam" a "Gundam"; if it is called such by official sources! I've been trying to say that all along!

the problem with that list is, there are more than 8 produced mobile suits. And only 8 frames. the RX-79 seems to be based more on a GM[G] frame than the Gundam "78" frame. What's confirmed is the 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. The other 2 are debated...but you can't say 2official release material" if you wish to answer an in-series context. The anime characters can't go "is this one a gunda? let's go get a model kit of it..." nand so, if it was developed under the CODENAME of Gundam, it is a Gundam. Note the GM Quell Hazel Head, and the lack of Gundam in its name. It looks like Gundam, sources would suggest people would call it a Gundam, but it wasn't built as a Gundam, so it isn't one. Quite simply, you're correct about the REAL reason. But the in-series reason, that i've been hinting at, is if it's been built as part of a "Gundam Project"

I don't necessarily agree, but I see what you're saying. Actually, the RGM-79[G] GM Ground Type was designed after the RX-79 models, but utilizes around 80% of the same components. Also, the RX-79 was based off of the RX-78-1 Prototype Gundam (note the fact that they were built in-part by using spare parts from the RX-78-1s; apparently they had a lot of leftovers), not the RX-78-2 Gundams. And yes, there are more Gundams than base frames. For those Gundams, they built all-new frames, and didn't utilize the RX-78-1 frames. If you look in the chart above, it clearly shows that.
