Hello, my name is Jaeger, and this thread is to help those who want to write, but think that they can't. If you're already a writer, this thread will likely be of no help to you whatsoever, but you are welcome to chime in on the topics at hand. I'm creating this thread for those who are wanting to branch out from their current media.

As for myself, I have a degree in English from James Madison University with a concentration in creative writing. I worked as I writer and cartoonist for the college newspaper. After college, I worked as a writer and cartoonist for the now defunct magazines, The Tidewater Dragon, and Atlas of Adventure. I also write comic books, with one self published.

In this thread I'll be addressing different aspects as to the writing process. Once I've posted a topic I'll be leaving it on the table for discussion for a couple of days, or until active discussion fades. Once a topic is moved from, it may be brought back to the table for active dicussion at any given time.

If you have any questions, please check the thread to make sure that the topic had not already been covered. If it has been discussed, but your question is not answered then post to bring it back up. If the topic you have a question on has not covered yet, but you really need an answer and cannot wait, please PM me.

Character driven versus plot driven.

This is a typical starting point for the writer. Either the writer has come up with a character who they really like, or there's an event they want to talk about. Please note: when I say event, I mean something that happens. Anything that happens is an event, anything. So we have two different starting points. Let's jump in.

When your story is character driven, you've chreated the character first. You want to make them do stuff. This involves fleshing out your character, which I will be covering thoroughly in the next topic. There has to be a challenge for this character. The challenge itself can be nearly anything, as long as it forces the character to act.

When the story is plot driven, you have something in your head you want to see happen. This process is trickier because you're creating characters and a timeline around this one event. That is not to say that this is the wrong way to ge about things, but it is usually more difficult. Timelines and plotting will be covered right after fleshing out you characters. To really get the ball rolling with this creative process you have to ask yourself "what type of character would be doing this?"

Optional homework assignment: create a character or an event that you would like to tell the story of.
