The Gods took them to an alternate plane of existence so they wouldn't be killed. There is a good short story is Dragons of the Archives about a Cleric being taken across.

What I've been wondering is why didn't they ever come back? There were new clerics when the humans found the Gods again, like Goldmoon, but none of the old cleircs returned... neutral

maybe they were there so long that their natural life times ended so they couldn't come back cuz they were tenically dead

Maybe their bodies died while their souls were in the gods' realm, like if Crysania had stayed too long, her body would eventually wither too. Besides, the gods have most power when they are being worshipped, and I don't think that they were the people's favourites after hurling the glowing mountain at Istar. Only my op.

Well, when the gods threw that firey mountain on the Kingpriest, they took the clerics to a "safe place", right.
Even still the clerics were still mortal and had to die. I'm fairly sure that the gods wouldn't have put them in a plane where they would live forever. I mean, even when the gods came back there were very few elves who remembered the cataclysm that I know of. Lorac and... well... he's about it. Only because he was so "young" (by elven standards) when it happened... and we're led to believe that most of the true priests were older by the standards of their respective people.
