Can you prove to me that sky is blue using only words?

Now if you want to debate wether or not the sky is infact blue, feel free. But I really want some one to prove it.

I think this subject is discussed in Unweaving the Rainbow by Richard Dawkins.

The atmosphere contains particles that bend parts of the light from the sun at different angles. Because of the type of particles, most of teh light that reaches us is of the frequency that we experience as "blue".

That isn't a proof, it's an explanation.

Thank you for the explanation, it was a good one.

Wow if this was regular ED I would have about a hundred responses telling me that the sky is blue because they can see it and it is Dx

And we can measure that light frequency. It is within the range that is defined as blue.

Well, it depends on your view point. What is blue for you? Is it this? Or this maybe? Or maybe even this?

For one who is color blind, it would be very difficult to explain what is blue, especially if they can only see in Grayscale.

I didn't exactly answer the question, as I realize the two before me have done such already, but I can add what I feel I should add.

You could do so and show me the results... But I said only using words, meaning physical evidence is excluded.

Words don't mean a whole lot without the reality or even the idea behind them. So to answer your question, no, I can't prove it without science.

The sky is not blue. Particles have no concept of color. The human eye picks up the frequency of light and therefore assigns the sky the color blue, but if there was no human eye looking at the sky, then nothing would pick up the light frequency and give it color.

Therefore it is literally, all in your mind.

And it also means that the seemingly idiotic answer that the sky is blue because one can "see it and it is" is surprisingly close.

Going by that logic, you really can't prove anything. At all. Besides, the concept of 'blue' is a man-made thing. Animals wouldn't say the sky was blue, nor would they care.

....I'm not really getting anywhere with this post, am I?

Nope, but that's okay. ^_^

If it is possible to prove the sky blue, than it would only be through words. But it probably isn't possible.

Quite simply, the sky is "blue" because we call it "blue." There is something we perceive about the sky (more precisely, wavelengths of light) that we put in the category of blue. However, if someone wanted to call the sky "orange", theoretically, that would be their opinion, and they would have every right to express it.

I can in fact provide sufficient evidence that the sky is blue, especially if I state that "blue" is defined as a color which stimulates the blue sensors in ones eyes far more than the red or green ones, and if I can say that the sky does in fact do this through replicable experimentation; i.e., "hay go look, you'll see it's blue."
However, in this distinct case, I find it arbitrarily restricting that you're not allowing pictures. After all, if I want to prove the appearance of something, I personally would just take a picture.
