TABLE OF CONTENTS Welcome to Thread Charity Thread Guild's Abortion debate; I just want to clear a few things up about this debate. This thread is to be used for educated discussion, and I have not put every single bit of information in my own words. I sadly know that most of you will not read this first page, but I strongly suggest you do so to avoid looking like a fool. I spent many, many hours working on just this first page even before it made it's way to where someone other than the mods could see it. This page is well researched, I hope you too can help make it stronger. Post any of your ideas in the Thread and maybe they will be added to the first page. I hope everyone feels their opinions are heard, but make sure you stay civil with your comments, or they will be deleted. How to report abuse in this Thread: Quote the person who has said something harmful to the discussion and tell me why you think this needs to be removed, if I agree, I will delete their post and edit yours to say something else. TERMS TO KNOW Potential Sides exclaim Abortion is always wrong, even when the woman's life is in danger exclaim Abortion is always wrong except where life ONLY is in danger, no health exceptions exclaim Abortion is always wrong except where health and life of the woman are in danger exclaim Abortion should be restricted to certain circumstances: Life and Health of the mother plus some others such as rape or incest (etc) exclaim Pro-choice (any reason), for only the first trimester exclaim Pro-choice (any reason), for only the first and second trimester exclaim Pro-choice (any reason), for any trimester exclaim Pro-choice (any reason), but I personally would never get one Have another POV? Post it in the Thread and I will add it to the potential sides list. I am not perfect and this is all I could come up with.Other Terms To KnowAnti-Choice - Nobody should have a Choice. WHAT IS ABORTION? Abortion MethodsSuction Aspiration This is the most common method of abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. General or local anaesthesia is given to the mother and her cervix is quickly dilated. A suction curette (hollow tube with a knife-edged tip) is inserted into the womb. This instrument is then connected to a vacuum machine by a transparent tube. The vacuum suction, 29 times more powerful than a household vacuum cleaner, tears the fetus and placenta into small pieces which are sucked through the tube into a bottle and discarded. Dilation and Curettage (D&C) This method is similar to the suction method with the added insertion of a hook shaped knife (curette) which cuts the baby into pieces. The pieces are scraped out through the cervix and discarded [Note: This abortion method should not be confused with a therapeutic D&C done for reasons other than pregancy.] Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) This method is used up to 18 weeks' gestation. Instead of the loop-shaped knife used in D&C abortions, a pair of forceps is inserted into the womb to grasp part of the fetus. The teeth of the forceps twist and tear the bones of the unborn child. This process is repeated until the fetus is totally dismembered and removed. Usually the spine must be snapped and the skull crushed in order to remove them. Salt Poisoning (Saline Injection) Used after 16 weeks (four months) when enough fluid has accumulated. A long needle injects a strong salt solution through the mother's abdomen into the baby's sac. The baby swallows this fluid and is poisoned by it. It also acts as a corrosive, burning off the outer layer of skin. It normally takes somewhat over an hour for the baby to die from this. Within 24 hours, labor will usually set in and the mother will give birth to a dead or dying baby. (There have been many cases of these babies being born alive. They are usually left unattended to die. However, a few have survived and later been adopted.) Prostaglandin Chemical Abortion This form of abortion uses chemicals developed by the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co. which cause the uterus to contract intensely, pushing out the developing baby. The contractions are more violent than normal, natural contractions, so the unborn baby is frequently killed by them -- some have even been decapitated. Many, however, have also been born alive. Hysterotomy or Caesarean Section Used mainly in the last three months of pregnancy, the womb is entered by surgery through the wall of the abdomen. The technique is similar to a Caesarean delivery, except that the umbilical cord is usually cut while the baby is still in the womb, thus cutting off his oxygen supply and causing him/her to suffocate. Sometimes the baby is removed alive and simply left in a corner to die of neglect or exposure. Abortion in the Animal KingdomThere are many animals that have abortions in the Animal Kingdom. Many of these animals will wait until the baby is actually born to kill it. So, if the other animals of the world have abortions, even after death, why shouldn't we? We are animals are we not? Many believe in the death penalty for criminals, while those people have actually gained experience in life and had memories, so how is it different if we kill a fetus.

WHAT MAKES US HUMANS? WE ARE JUST ANIMALS! What is a Human? What is a Person?A Human is nothing more than an Animal on top of the food chain. We are just another species among the animal kingdom. The only difference is we know we are on top of the food chain and let it go to our heads. There is nothing extra special about being a human. ~Personal opinion of Frenchie123. You may discuss this theory. Humans Are AnimalsHuman beings define themselves in biological, social, and spiritual terms. Biologically, humans are classified as the species Homo sapiens (Latin for "knowing man"): a bipedal primate belonging to the superfamily of Hominoidea, with all of the apes: chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and gibbons. ~According to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human A human being is one who has his or her own unique set of human DNA, IE because something is HUMAN it is a HUMAN BEINGEvery individual human being on Earth has their own DNA (except identical twins) and because of this, each Human is unique. Right? Well, sure, when you think of it in DNA terms, yes, we are. However, our DNA came from two people, whos DNA came from two other people, so, we are all just mutations of whoever came first in the DNA that makes us unique. ~Personal opinion of Frenchie123 Does an ability to feel make one a human being?Humans have an ability to understand, or try to, their own existence and mortality, therefore, we are different that the other animals on Earth. As far as we know, the other Animals don’t have the same thoughts as Humans, so they are not as advanced. Do Animals Have Rights?Of course animals have rights (in most of the world), as do ALL humans. Technically, every single living creature on Earth has rights, including plants. We all at least should have the right to LIVE, but does that mean we should ALL be allowed to live? That is one of the main questions in the Abortion Debate.

THE MAIN ARGUMENTS The Pro-life Argument1. The Cost of Abortion 2. Backstreet Abortions Increase 3. Parallels between Abortion & Slavery 4. Indisputable Medical Evidence - the Unborn baby is a Human Being 5. Abortion Aggravates Child Abuse 6. Even Legal Abortions are Unsafe 7. Increase in Breast Cancer 8. Most South Africans Oppose Abortion 9. The Overpopulation Argument 10. The Bible Declares the Sanctity of Human Life ~for more, check out this site, which is where I got this from http://www.christianaction.org.za/articles/10rguments.htmThe Pro-Choice Argument1. "It is uncertain when human life begins; that's a religious question that cannot be answered by science." 2. "The fetus is just a part of the pregnant woman's body, like her tonsils or appendix. You can't seriously believe a frozen embryo is an actual person." 3. "The unborn is an embryo or a fetus-just a simple blob of tissue, a product of conception-not a baby. Abortion is terminating a pregnancy, not killing a child." 4. "The fetus may be alive, but so are eggs and sperm. The fetus is a potential human being, not an actual one; it's like a blueprint not a house, an acorn not an oak tree." 5. "The unborn isn't a person, with meaningful life. It's only inches in size, and can't even think; it's less advanced than an animal, and anyway, who says people have a greater right to live than animals?" 6. "A fetus isn't a person until implantation or until quickening or viability or when it first breathes." 7. "Obviously life begins at birth. That's why we celebrate birthdays, not conception days, and why we don't have funerals following miscarriages." 8. "No one can really know that human life begins before birth." 9. "Even if the unborn are human beings, they have fewer rights than the woman. No one should be expected to donate her body as a life support system for someone else." 10. "Every person has the right to choose. It would be unfair to restrict a woman's choice by prohibiting abortion." 11. "Every woman should have control over her own body. Reproductive freedom is a basic right." 12. "Abortion is a decision between a woman and her doctor. It's no one else's business. Everyone has a constitutional right to privacy." 13. "It's unfair for an unmarried woman to have to face the embarrassment of pregnancy or the pain of giving up a child for adoption." 14. "Abortion rights are fundamental for the advancement of women. They are essential to having equal rights with men." 15. "The circumstances of many women leave them no choice but to have an abortion." 16. "I'm personally against abortion, but I'm still prochoice. It's a legal alternative and we don't have the right to keep it from anyone. Everyone's free to believe what they want, but we shouldn't try to impose it on others." 17. "'Every child a wanted child.' It's unfair to children to bring them into a world where they're not wanted." 18. "Having more unwanted children results in more child abuse." 19. "Restricting abortion would be unfair to the poor and minorities, who need it most." 20. "Abortion helps solve the problem of over-population and raises the quality of life." 21. "Even if abortion were made illegal, there would still be many abortions." 22. "The anti-abortion beliefs of the minority shouldn't be imposed on the majority." 23. "The anti-abortion position is a religious belief that threatens the vital separation of church and state." 24. "If abortion is made illegal, tens of thousands of women will again die from back-alley and clothes-hanger abortions." 25. "Abortion is a safe medical procedure, safer than full-term pregnancy and childbirth." 26. "Abortion is an easy and painless procedure." 27. "Abortion relieves women of stress and responsibility, and thereby enhances their psychological well-being." 28. "Abortion providers are respected medical professionals working in the woman's best interests." 29. "What about a woman whose life is threatened by pregnancy or childbirth?" 30. "What about a woman whose unborn baby is diagnosed as deformed or handicapped?" 31. "What about a woman who is pregnant who has fallen victim to rape or incest?" 32. "Anti-abortionists are so cruel that they insist on showing hideous pictures of dead babies." 33. "Profilers don't care about women, and they don't care about babies once they're born. They have no right to speak against abortion unless they are willing to care for these children." 34. "The anti-abortionists are a bunch of men telling women what to do." 35. "Anti-abortionists talk about the sanctity of human life, yet they favor capital punishment." 36. "Anti-abortion fanatics break the law, are violent, and bomb abortion clinics." ~ Found on http://www.epm.org/articles/pla39.htmlSorry there are more Pro-Choice than Pro-Life, I will try and fix this shortly, you can help.

THE RAPE EXCEPTION The Rape ExceptionWhat is rape? forced or manipulated nonconsensual sexual contact, including vaginal or a**l intercourse, oral sex, or penetration with an object. Think about those words for a moment. Now, let’s break it down. So, the woman is raped, the man forces himself on the woman and she can’t do anything about it without getting more hurt. She has lost all control over herself. She has become a victim and is far too scared of the other pain that can become of her. She is scared of the shame of what happened once she admits what happened. Flash about a month ahead and she finds out she has a new baby. This man not only forced himself into her, now his DNA is in her forever. What is she supposed to do? Emotional and Physical Trauma after RapeImmediately following rape: ~ Physical injuries such as cuts, bruises or other injuries, including vaginal and rectal tears. ~ Fear, anger, crying, or unusual behavior such as laughter. ~ No outward emotional signs (sometimes). Aftereffects (may be weeks to months): ~ Feelings of self-blame and guilt. ~ Depression and withdrawal, even from family and friends. ~ Mood swings; feelings of grief, shame, revenge. ~ Loss of appetite. ~ Fear of intercourse, fear of men. ~ Nightmares, sleep disorders. ~ Fear of being alone. ~ Anxiety. If all of this is caused just by the act of rape itself, imagine how intense it would be if there was a new child involved. The woman would be expected to carry this child in her and it would be part of her for at least 9 months. Can you kill a born child who's father was a rapist? We can’t pick our parents, right? It is not the child’s fault that their father chose to act inhumanly so how can we take our anger with the father out on the innocent child? The Rape Victim is not at Fault for her conditionThe rape victim lost all control of her body and what went in it in a matter of moments. She started her day being herself and suddenly her identity is changed by us to be a victim. How can we then tell her how to feel about herself after that happened. Some extra information about the issue of rape and how an unwanted pregnancy can be analogous to that of an instance of rape.~ poor women and girls who have been raped are routinely refused funding for abortion under Medicaid, the government program that is the primary source of health care for those with the fewest resources. ~ Congress passed the Hyde Amendment, which prohibited federal Medicaid funding for abortion unless a woman's life was in immediate danger. In 1993, an exception was added to permit coverage if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest. ~ So, what happens today when a woman or girl who has been sexually assaulted seeks Medicaid funding for abortion in one of the many states that pay only in the case of rape/incest or life endangerment? The reality is that she is almost always denied coverage for the abortion. ~ At least 9,100 abortions each year are attributed to pregnancies that occur because of forced sexual intercourse, according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute. ~ information received from http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2005/04/b615981.htmlDoes the Rape Exception Make Sense?~ Pregnancy due to rape is extremely rare, and with proper treatment can be prevented. ~ Rape is never the fault of the child; the guilty party, not an innocent party, should be punished. ~The violence of abortion parallels the violence of rape. ~ Abortion does not bring healing to a rape victim. ~ A child is a child regardless of the circumstances of his conception. ~ What about already-born people who are "products of rape"? ~ All that is true of children conceived in rape is true of those conceived in incest.

THE MENTAL PUNISHMENT Facing the Consequences of your Actions - The Punishment Mentality.~ Every post-abortion woman has undergone a real death experience - the death of her child. ~ Grief is a natural consequence of death. Most women who abort did not use protection - a misconception~ Research tells us that when used consistently and correctly condoms are 98 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. ~ Experts estimate that condoms break or slip only two percent of the time. ~ Condoms are efficient if they are used properly, but not everyone knows how to actually use them. This sounds crazy, but it is true. ~ User failure is calculated by looking at 100 couples who use condoms as their primary method of birth control. Over the course of a year, about 14 of these couples will experience an unintended pregnancy during the first year. Information found onhttp://www.communityactionkit.org/pdfs/Getting_Ready_To_Advocate/Debunking_Condoms.htmlhttp://www.hopeafterabortion.com/aftermath/index.cfm?page=angelo

THE LAWS Roe vs. Wade:The central holding of Roe v. Wade was that abortions are permissible for any reason a woman chooses, up until the "point at which the fetus becomes ‘viable,’ that is, potentially able to live outside the mother's womb, albeit with artificial aid. How this relates to the abortion debate:This case directly stated that Abortion was made legal up to a point in the pregnancy but the point could be set by individual states. McFall V Shimp:~ Here is an example of one of the few U.S. state statutes that impose a legal obligation for a person to help a stranger: ~ A person who knows another is exposed to grave physical harm shall, to the extent that the same can be rendered without danger or peril to himself or without interference with important duties owed to others, give reasonable assistance to the exposed person unless that assistance or care is being provided by others. How this relates to the abortion debate:In this case, it states you do not have to risk your own life to save another, so, a woman does not have to risk her life to save her child’s.

ALTERNATIVES If you don't want children, Don't have sex.~ This is the most common comment said in the abortion debate. Although it is true, it is just not very educated. About Abstinence~ This is saying the same thing as “don’t have sex” but for some odd reason it just sounds better. Responsibility~ If someone is just going to insist on having sex, they should do it responsibly. 1. Get an STD check from both partners 2. Use a birth control pill 3. Use a condom (female and male) 4. Use a Dental Dam 5. use a diaphragm 6. intra-uterine system (IUD) 7. Hormonal implants 8. natural family planning – not recommended 9. the withdrawal method – not recommended 10. sterilization 11. Free contraception Adoption~ Adoption as a form of birth control. WHAT?! ~ Many people who accidentally become pregnant put their babies up for adoption. This is the most socially acceptable solution in many societies. ~ There are many homes around the world that would love to have a child of their own. ~ The risk of course is the child being put with bad parents. Why Not Just get Your Tubes Tied?~ This is an irreversible treatment where a woman’s fallopian tubes get blocked off so the egg can not travel down them and become fertal.

FETAL ABILITIES What is a Fetus Capable of?Eight-week pre-born baby At eight to nine weeks the eyelids have begun forming and hair appears. By the ninth and tenth weeks the preborn child sucks her thumb, turns somersaults, jumps, can squint to close out light, frown, swallow, and move her tongue. At this early stage of development, suction abortions are performed using a smaller tube, requiring little dilation of the cervix. This is called "menstrual extraction." However, if all the fetal remains are not removed, infection results, requiring full dilation of the cervix and a scraping out of the womb. Twelve-week pre-born baby By the end of the third month all arteries are present, including the coronary vessels of the heart. Blood is circulating through these vessels to all body parts. The heart beat ranges during this fetal period from 110 to 160 beats per minute. All blood cells are produced by the liver and spleen, a job soon taken over by the bone marrow. White blood cells, important for immunity, are formed in the lymph nodes and thymus. Vocal chords are complete, and the child can and does sometimes cry (silently). The brain is fully formed, and the child can feel pain. The fetus may even suck his thumb. The eyelids now cover the eyes, and will remain shut until the seventh month to protect the delicate optical nerve fibers. 14 weeks Muscles lenghten and become organized. The mother will soon start feeling the first flutters of the baby kicking and moving inside. 15 weeks The fetus has an adult's taste buds and may be able to savor the mother's meals. 16 weeks Five and a half inches tall and only six ounces in weight, eyebrows, eyelashes and fine hair appear. The child can grasp with his hands, kick, or even somersault. 18 week pre-born baby The fetus is now about 5 inches long. The child blinks, grasps, and moves her mouth. Hair grows on the head and body. 20 weeks The child can hear and recognize mother's voice. Though still small and fragile, the baby is growing rapidly and could possibly survive if born at this stage. Fingernails and fingerprints appear. Sex organs are visible. Using an ultrasound device, the doctor can tell if the child is a girl or a boy. The one on the left is a baby girl. Six month pre-born baby Seen here at six months, the unborn child is covered with a fine, downy hair called lanugo. Its tender skin is protected by a waxy substance called vernix. Some of this substance may still be on the child's skin at birth at which time it will be quickly absorbed. The child practices breathing by inhaling amnionic fluid into developing lungs. 30 weeks For several months, the umbilical cord has been the baby's lifeline to the mother. Nourishment is transferred from the mother's blood, through the placenta, and into the umbilical cord to the fetus. If the mother ingests any toxic substances, such as drugs or alcohol, the baby receives these as well. 32 weeks The fetus sleeps 90-95% of the day, and sometimes experiences REM sleep, an indication of dreaming. Is a fetus a person?~ Many argue that is fetus is a person ~ A baby will react more strongly to its mother's voice than to any other's simply because it has been hearing this voice for nine months prior to its birth. For the counter argument click here please http://mypage.direct.ca/w/writer/fetusperson.htmlA Fetus Has A heart Beat~ Once a Fetus has a heartbeat, it is considered a human being by many.

THE MOD’S OPINIONS Donate Angel I feel as though a woman has a choice of what to do with her body, but I would never ever have an abortion myself. No matter what happened to me or to cause the baby, I couldn’t do that to another life. Frenchie123 I feel that a woman has a choice to decide what to do with her own body. I am not sure if I would ever have an abortion or not, but I doubt it.
