Please don't flame me if this seems like a stupid question, but I've always wanted to start this discussion, I've just been too cowardly. But yet again, curiosity is the downfall of me.

Anyways, I was just wondering what you thought, pushing God temporarily out of this debate. Humans, dating back to their most primitive forms, have always had an aversion to death. When in a dangerous situation, whether that be confronting a bully or running away from a serial killer, our fight or flight responses kick in. No matter how suicidal you are your body arms itself to stay alive when you hold a gun to your head, whether or not you decide to pull the trigger.

If there isn't a God, no punishment for the wicked, and no personal heaven, then one human life is just one pointless part of a pointless cycle, so I guess there would be no point to hang on.

If there is a God, and some sort of life -- whatever that may be -- after your die, why do our bodies still arm us against the inevitable if the inevitable is supposed to be a golden palace where you get to fly around all day and be yippy-skippy with your dead ancestors -- forgive my religious stereotype. Why do even the truly religious -- save for mother Teressa and Jesus Christ -- cling to life when confronted with a potentially lethal situation?

It's evolutionary. People not afraid of dying would die, and not pass on their genes. People afraid of dying would try to survive, and pass on their genes. It's pretty straightforward.

I'm actually not afraid of dying. But then again, I have chronic severe depression.

I dont want to die. I'm too young, there's so much I haven't done in life.

Not to mention, there are so many questions. Are Heaven and Hell real? Or do we just walk the Earth after we die, unable to interact with our loved ones? Or does everything just go black?

I Really don't want to die. I'm mortified of it, in fact (haha, crappy pun). Although when I think of how long living (hopefully), say, 80 years, really is, this quote from A Farewell To Arms seems most appropriate, "Don't wish for me to live forever. I nearly have, you know".

I'm not really afraid of dying. Not that I'm jumping up and down screaming 'kill me now because I'm not afraid'. I just feel that when it's time for me to die, then I'll die. I can hope that it wont be any time soon, but i can't control it really.

It's funny what you can open your ears to when your mind isn't twisted into a giant knot over this question.

Beyond a religious point of view, is there a reason why we keep our species going? I mean, we're all going to die and if living is a pointless part of a pointless cycle, what's the point? ... if you actually understood that.

Yeah, okay, I realize that there might not be a point. I just wanted to see what you guys thought.

Yeah, science can't tell you if there is a 'point,' but definitely tells you the cause. The point of surviving is to reproduce. That is so because it is successful. It's a cycle that sustains itself. We survive because we have the urge to. We have the urge to because those that didn't died. It's actually kind of amusing. Evolution wins.

As to the point of living, that's entirely up to debate. I think living is the point of life. I believe in reincarnation. I think that each life, we as spirits become more mature. It's not something that can be proven or disproven, but it's my thought. Until I find some compelling evidence for something else, I'll probably stick to it, or expand on it. I'm sort of shamanist.

I'm not afraid of dying, per se, but some nights I'm kept awake by the thought of Oblivion.

Neither are trees, but they have no definite life-span. A tree could potentially live forever.

And so could I.

Besides those facts, I didn't say I am going to live forever.

And don't tell me I'm going to die. That's rude and defeatist.

I'm not intending to be rude, and it's not defeatist. Everyone dies, it's just a fact of life.

"What has always been may not always be." --quote from a book I read years ago and can't remember the name of.

"It has always been so," doesn't prove anything about the future.
