Canon Characters
You just finished watching Star Bores Episode 7 and you realise that you liked how that Duke Highstroller was portrayed. It looked awesome and you want to do it too! You know what? Don't. Capital D, Don't!! Characters from T.V., movies, books or any other form of media are usually copy written and are also known as ‘Canon' (aka: an authoritative work by the author/writer). That means, no Aragorn from Lord of the Rings, no Luke from Star Wars and definitely no Squall from Final Fantasy.
Also by creating a character ripped from the pages of a script or book can land you in some legal hot water. Some authors allegedly frown upon such usage of their work (I believe Anne Rice and her characters are one of them). Rule of thumb for canon characters is simple: Unless you have permission or you are a flawless role-player, don't even think about it. A notable exception is when it comes to material from role-playing books. Please check the fine print located either in the front or the back of the book for their usage policy. If you can't find it there, check the publisher's website. They usually have a disclaimer somewhere for people to see.
