Koravin reminded me that I was neglecting the guild and that discussion has come to a complete halt. It's partly my fault for being banned two weeks straight, but whatever. She suggested that I go back to the gay marriage thread, but I think rather than make an a** out of myself and say some more things I know I"m going to word wrong, I'll just make a new thread.

We hear time and time again about reparations. How we should all say sorry for slavery and racism, and how the black folks should recieve money for the treatment we, the whiteys, have given them a hundred years ago.

Anybody here thinks the need to give money that the government doesn't have to black folk because of how they were treated in the past?

You're back!

Well, I think none. We can't be held accountable for our ancestors' actions. That's ridiculous. Reparations should only be given to the people directly effected, ie, the slaves.

It IS ridiculous. I can't believe people are still considering it. Life's hard enough being accountable for our own actions, let alone our maybe-ancestors (I know I don't have any ancestors who were slave owners; we were illegal Irish immigrants and Native Americans).

If we make reparations for the ancestors of slaves, how about for the ancestors of victims of the witch trials? Or even my poor, mistreated Irish ancestors. I'm suffering in the here and now because of it. rolleyes

My ancestors on my father's side were slave owners and my ancestors on my mother's side were hardcore abolitionists. Ironic, no?

Equality should be ultimate goal despite the fact that it can never be achieved. Enslaving blacks went against that goal but making whites generations later pay blacks for it does too.

Respect the past but don't let it hinder the future.

I think my ancestors on my father's side were slaver owners (they owned a sugar cane plantation in Puerto Rico). To my knowledge, there isn't anyone that is showing up at my dad's family's houses demanding payback for the 'torture and tourment' that their ancestors were put through...

I bet that there are people that just make up names of 'ancestors' and claim that they were slaves. I'd imagine that it would be pretty hard to prove that an ancestor was a slave given that stuff like that wasn't really recorded back then (or was it?). Either way, people are just being greedy bastards and should shut up.

I still can't get over how ridiculous the idea is. I'm sure everyone could start filing lawsuits for their ancestors misery! We'd have more people sueing one another than we do already!

Reparations should be given to the surviving victims of the USA concentration camps during WWII (you know, the ones they put japanese people in).

I've been sort of avoiding the internet lately. I've been emotionally retarded as of late, I haven't been able to be happy or have fun. It's a mixture of not getting the biggest birthday gift I was ever promised (going to see Cirque De Soliel) and having my account being banned for two weeks (It's not the being banned part that bugs me, it's just why).

I'm a b***h. The internet's the last thing on my mind lately.

That's okay. I ran away from gaia for about 6 months because I became so depressed. I'm sorry about Cirque, that would have been cool. I hope you feel better.

So true, I heartily agree.

It's a stupid idea. Yeah, slavery was bad and everything, but today's generation doesn't hold any responsibility, therefore shouldn't have to pay.

Personally, my ancestors were no where near America when there was slaves here. It wouldn't be fair if I had to pay, since my ancestors also had nothing to do with slavery ever (that I know of).

The only time when I would say that there should be reparations for slavery would be if there are any people still alive today who were slaves.

In my opinion, the only kind of reparations that we need to make is to make sure that it never happens again. Civil rights and equality for all both show respect to long-dead slaves and benefit their descendents far more than money ever could.
