APPEARANCE
Cailín is obviously a warrior, born and bred. Her fiery red hair is shoulder-length and braided back tightly in what we would term a 'french braid', from forehead to tip. Her dark green eyes show little emotion, and have a sharp, calculating look to them. Her mouth is rarely seen in a smile or frown, which seems to just accent the fact her features are sharp and her face lost the softness of childhood long ago. Though she does have the curves of a woman, they are offset by her wiry, lean build and height, standing at 6'1". Very little of her is soft or looks soft. Her skin is slightly tanned, with freckles across her nose and cheeks, and scars littering her body...A sign of her harsh life in Cledwyn. Tattooed on her back is a black bear, a sign of her allegiance to Coimirceoir, a guardian goddess.

PERSONALITY
Cailín is a woman of many layers. The Cailín that most people see is a callous, cold woman who holds the feelings of others and herself in little regard. She's not one to apologize, and speaks with a calculating tone. She does not understand the use of emotions in life, and often keeps her own locked tightly away. She's meticulous in everything she does, from cleaning her lodgings to completing an assignment. She prefers to leave no stone unturned, and is often annoyed and angered when information that could have been vital was kept from her. Cailín often seems on edge and extremely alert, and is often the first to react to a sudden noise or a new person in the room. She's also quick-tempered and harsh of others, but rather than lashing out, she doesn't talk. She expects no less than the best, and can seem far too demanding of others. She rarely smiles, and when she does it is an awkward smile, but true. She's not one to lie, and abhors lies like many abhor the ugly. She's tactless, saying things without a candy-coating and without bias. To her, saying what one sees is a sign of trustworthiness and honor.
But underneath the harshness of the warrior-woman is another side that shows in small things that she does. She is willing to help those that need it, and is a protector of those who can't protect themselves. Cailín will often help carry something or help with a task out of nowhere, without complaint, and maybe a few words on how to do the task better. She will cover her comrades' backs in battle, and will often fight do her best to protect a spellcaster from physical harm. She is devout in her worship of Coimirceoir, and will never harm anyone for the sheer joy of it. Though she is awkward with children, she does love them, and it can be seen in the way the warrior-woman handles her niece, Oisín, with an awkward gentleness. Cailín is very loyal, and once one has made her a friend and gotten beneath the harsh exterior, she will never leave them. Though betrayal is something she does not tolerate. Those who betray her will find she is an unforgiving enemy.
On her own, Cailín balances her martial arts with arts of a more philosophical bent. One would never suspect it...but Cailín is a lover of poetry, and loves to write it. She's still a bit...rough around the edges with her poetry, but it has a haunting tone to it that only one who has seen death can achieve. She never tries to write about something she has not experienced, so her poetry is a look into her life and self...which may be the reason she keeps it well guarded.

HISTORY
Cailín's life has been hard from day one. Her father was a military man, a soldier in the war against the Ejderha and rarely home; her mother was a sickly woman; and Aidan, her elder brother by a year, was blind. She was the quiet little girl who grew to be protective of her family. Cailín helped around the house a lot, and steadily became the strongest member of the household. She learned some swordplay, in order to more effectively protect her mother and brother, and was constantly rough-housing with the boys of Cledwyn. And she was a devout follower of the local guardian goddess, Coimirceoir. When she was twelve, word came to the village that several of the men who had been serving in the war had died, including Cailín's father. After that, Cailín vowed to take up the warrior's sword, to take her father's place as the family defender. She gathered up the shattered pieces of her father's sword that had been delivered with the news and took it to Coimirceoir's shrine, and insisted she be trained among their paladins.
Now...this surprised the clergy, to have a girl come to them with the determination Cailín had. They took her on, first as a page. She was constantly running errands, attending proper martial arts lessons, and getting a 'proper' education. Cailín proved to be a model student, with a fire in her spirit unlike anything they'd seen before. At age 15, she became a squire to Sir Felix, and continued her training...this time out in the field of battle as well as in the safety of the shrine. At age 18, she became a low-level paladin, a Swordswoman of the Shrine. That day was also marked by the happy occasion of her brother's wedding to Ashling, his childhood sweetheart.

The Build Our World! Contest may have ended, but we encourage you to keep working on this character! We are still accepting new cities, so feel free to elaborate on Cledwyn, or, failing that, you can just put Cailin as hailing from Camacho – a pirate city in Furud. You have a very nice writing style, and we’d like to see you keep working on her!

We’ve seen two layers of Cailin, but I’d like to see a few more. What we’ve seen is pretty much all business. What happens when Cailin is by herself? What happens when she’s in the tavern with friends? Is Cailin very introspective? Does she even have many friends? How is she in social situations?
