As I mentioned in another thread I've probably been around a bit longer than other Gaians so I've been into anime since the mid '80s when it was still called Japanimation here in the states. Back then copies of anime were traded between fans and there were lots of fan subs going around.
At science fiction conventions it wouldn't be unusual to pay $20 for a grainy 3rd or 4th generation copy of a copy of an anime movie on VHS (or a couple hours of an anime TV series). When licenced anime started to appear it was something like $50 for the same stuff and often censored so we still continued to buy the cheaper fan subs.
Some of the big name anime back then were Urusei Yatsura, Dirty Pair, Fist of the North Star, Gal Force, Bubblegum Crisis, Project A-ko, Machine Robo, Dan Cougar, Lupin the 3rd and the early Studio Ghibli movies just to name a few.
I might even say that my anime fandom goes back to the '70s, only back then as a kid I didn't realize that the badly dubbed and censored stuff I was watching on TV came from Japan. Speed Racer (Mach Gogogo), Battle of the Planets (aka Science Ninja Team Gatchaman), Gigantor (Tetsujin #2 cool , Voltron, Starblazers (Space Battleship Yamato), Tranzor Z (Great Mazinga) and others.
How far back do you go?

Heh, I go back to my beloved [adult swim]. I was off and on for a few years until about 2001. That is were I watched Cowboy Bepop! I love that anime. Then I just watched random clips of anime on the net. I guess I really got started in 2001-02. Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and other animes that aired from Toonami and [Adult Swim]. So, there you have it.

I've been watching anime for as long I can remember. I started off watching Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, and Pokemon. But it was my older brother that got me into anime and just Japan in general.
After a few years of being anime addicted I just kinda faded...then I met Emi ([.x.MissyCoffin.x.]) and she got me right back into all of my favorite anime, along with many others!

wow this brings memories!! I remember Pokemon. AHAHAHAHA My parents didn't allow me but i watched at me friends house =^^= I remember i was watching Rouroni Kenshin and I loved it, but then my parents saw him cut someone and then they said NO MORE! I didn't know it was anime at te time, nor did i know what anime WAS. I WAS a fool. Then I remember moving on from Teen titans (okay i'm guilty of watching a poser anime >.> ) to this new show coming on called Naruto ( big aaahhhh i remember that day for alot of ppl ) I loved it and for a long time i didn't miss a show! then came OTHER responsbilites ( GAAHHHH!!!) so i would tape them (yes TAPE ) other than that I found FullMetal about....pssh one year ago? I saw it on [adult swim] and i liked the sound of it, learned more about it, got ahold of the manga, and now i'm obesessed! ^^ so i think it would be safe to say i've been watching since i was about 7 years old ^^ or younger 0.o

Geez, you guys talk like Teen Titans was years ago. It just ended last year didn't it? Now Dexter's Laboratory I could understand someone saying was long ago. But anyway, back to anime.

Well, my first anime to ever watch was either Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball, which was when I was like 5 years old...? So yeahh, it was quite a while ago. Like mid to late nineties. Pokemon was an early one for me, but it came after the first experience.
But, the first full-fledged manga I ever read was Yu Yu Hakusho when I was like 9 years old ^^

Wicked Chibiusa Oh yeah, I remember watching Teen Titans too! I always loved Raven, Beast Boy, and Terra... ahh good times, good times Yeahh, Raven was my all-time favorite!
I remember Mary and I used to stay up late watching Cartoon Network. First Teen Titans would have two episodes on, then it would switch to Adult Swim, which then showed all the currently played anime, like InuYasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop.

Since I'm younger, I can't say that I've been watching since the 80s... I wasn't around then, heh
But, I can say that as soon as I was old enough, I did start watching things like cartoon network's Toonami and Adult Swim. Here lately Adult Swim has next to no anime though... *sigh*
Anyway, I make a point to find lots of anime that falls a little to the side of mainstream. I can't follow series with 100+ episodes very well. >.>
