Like the games, besting Gyms here earns you a badge. However, there are a few more perks to challenging Gyms.
Perks to Fighting Gym Leaders
1. If there is space, one who defeats a leader can become a Trainer known as a Trainee. There can be a maximum of two Trainees per gym Leader. Trainees get the right to "test" Trainers before they actually get to enter the Gym and fight the Leader. All Trainees must be beaten before the Leader can be challenged. Also, in the event that a Gym Leader is upgraded to Elite Four, or simply wishes to quit, the two Trainees can fight for the right to take over the Gym.
2. Beating all of the Gyms currently formed in a single region nets you the ability to become a Gym Leader if there is room for more in that region.
3. Earning all 8 badges in a region fulfills ONE of the many requirements to become an Elite Four member. More on that later.
And one more minor thing... Those who beat Gym Leaders get their name on the Gym wall, and a Badge to put in their Pokedex.

Becoming a Gym Leader
Here's what you have been waiting for wink How in the world do I get the honor of giving out shiny badges being a Gym Leader?
Method One: Winning a Tourny.
While this isn't finalized, chances are that Tournament winners shall be given the opportunity to start a Gym. Because the Tourny coming up is the first one ever, we may also choose to extend this invitation to the second and thrid place winners as well.
Method Two: Besting the Region
If there are less then 8 Gym to a certain region, then those who defeat all of the Gyms currently in that region can take a Gym. This is impossible if there are already 8 Gyms, however.
Method Three: Hand-Me-Down
If a previous Gym Leader is kicked off, or gives up his or her position, one of the two Trainees under that Gym can step up to take the job. However, if both Trainees want the Gym, they must battle for it.

Running a Gym
Here's the meat and bones, once you become a Gym Leader, how the heck do you run a Gym?
Trainees must be beaten first. The names of the Trainees must be placed on the Gym wall by the Leader. Challenging the Trainees is done on their time, and the battles are in the Battlefield. Once both Trainees confirm their loss, then the Gym leader can be challenged, and the name of the Challenger will be placed in a "Ready to Challange" list. If you lose to a Trainee, then you can try again as many times as you need. Once you beat one, you do not have to fight them again if you lose to the second one.
Gym Battles are taken up in the Gym Leader's thread, and are the same as regular battles. The only difference is, if you lose, you must wait one day to challenge again.
Once you win, you will be PM'd the Badge, and your name will be on the wall of the Gym.
No Gyms are open at the time of writing, due to there being a lack of Badges to hand out. sweatdrop

Cream of the Crop: Elite Four
Now, here's the REAL challange to being a trainer. Become a member of the Elite Four. As in the games, there are 4 members per Region.
There are many requirements to becoming an Elite Four member.
1. They must have all Badges from one region.
2. They must have been once a Gym Leader.
3. They must have won at least one Tournament.
Not much has been figured out about the Elite Four, but more will be added as we come up with it.
