"And so, during the course of the investigation, we uncovered your personal locker. These items were inside, and they have been cleared to be returned to you." Melody Eight Theta hurried through the explanation to Doctor Jackson about his data drives of music. She still felt horribly embarrassed about showing them off to the commander like they were an important break in the case. She wanted this day washed off her hands, preferably in a long, hot soak in her own personal bathtub.
And so here she was, standing in the doorway to Doctor Jackson's room, handing the drives over to him. The end of the story. She held them out in her right hand. Jackson reached out and grabbed them with his left.
"What are these?"
"Your music collection, presumably. Mostly from the late twentieth century."
"Was there anything else in there of mine?"
"No. ... Should there have been?"
Jackson looked up from the data drives and grinned at her crookedly. Melody found the motion off-putting and took a step back.
"If I knew that, you wouldn't have to waste your time breaking into my personal locker, would you?" Melody's eyes narrowed. Jackson was reminding her less of the stuttering doctor and more of the calm Tillian-stabber from the day before.
She didn't have the patience for this. Not right now. Soon, she'd have to open her own locker and find out things about herself. And she had to close out this investigation. And trading verbal barbs with the Doctor had no bearing on either.
"Have a good evening, Doctor." Melody turned and left. He watched her walk down the hallway and turn the corner. His eyes lingered on where she used to be for a few moments, and then he stepped back inside of his room.
He strode with purpose over to his desk, pulled out the chair and had a seat. He spun around a couple of times while going through the drives, reading off the names to himself.
"ELO...Neil Diamond...The Beatles...Pink Floyd...aha." He held up one drive in particular. The name 'John, Elton' was emblazoned on it. Within moments, the drive was inserted into the proper port on his desk system, and speakers mounted in the nearby wall began to play the ancient music.
Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
He sunk down in the chair, relaxed, eyes half-open, spinning around lazily as the music filled the room.
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
Daniel my brother you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal
Your eyes have died but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky
He unbuttoned his shirt and ran his hand absent-mindedly down the long, faint scar running down the side of his abdomen. His fingers traced the contours, stretched and healed over for most of his life, knowing them as well as if the gouge were freshly made yesterday.
There was a contented smile on his face as the song ended.
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
Oh God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
Daniel snapped the song off and sat up in his chair, smiling at the reflection in the mirror above his desk.
"That's right...I remember everything."
He ran a finger affectionately down the outlines of the data drives.
"Oh, Doctor Jackson...what a terrible thing you've done."
