I found the blurb about trying to beat Balio & Sunder at the end of
DavidK5's faq. He's one of the most knowledgeable BoF3 players on Gamefaqs, and I highly recommend his guide. (The Secrets FAQ at the bottom of the faq list is also nice for info on hidden statistics, like how Meryleep can increase your evasion or Ladon can increase fire resistance).
Anyway, I got a lot further in my LLG. The guide is suboptimal in places and calls for doing a lot of unnecessary stuff that made me really nervous about a few fights. You do
not need to outfit your entire party in end-game equipment (Fairy Village) to get past Mikba...! I did get some really good armor for Nina though (her Defense was brought up to Ryu's level), but even without them she might have survived Quake from her full 50 HP.
Now I'm about ready to explore the Chrysm Lab so I can start kicking a** with the Force gene... I'll probably be using some of my Black Porgies (recovers 20 AP) since Ryu only has ~50 AP and Aura takes 20.
Pictures! ^^
Gisshan, Scylla & Charybdis (Garr used Monopolize to take all of the EXP so I didn't have to end the battle with just him). This battle SUCKED since I forgot to get a Claymore, so a 7-hit Super Combo did 300 damage compared to the guide's 500, leading to a lot of stalling since Gisshan has Vitalize.

Garr gets his a** kicked by a kid! (I forgot to use Behemoth's Blitz and used Meteor Strike instead, which did slightly more than a physical, 90 damage, since it only had ~300 HP and breath attacks are based on how high your HP are. Thankfully this was an easy fight and I still kicked his a** after I ran out of AP and reverted. Go go Ring of Fire!)

Dragon Zombie (I HATE Bone Dance):

The "Mighty" Mikba, who did about 12 damage to Nina after 2 Protects:

Also, apparently poison damage doesn't kill you. I revived Rei at the start (Ammonias revive with 1 HP) and Mikba immediately used Poison Breath, so I was like gah, I'll have to revive him again! Nope, he took 0 damage from poison. Good times!
