"@#$%!" Snatching a steel shortstaff out of his subspace pocket, Benjamin slammed it part-way into the stage and dove away. Fortunately for the onmitsu, physics apparently applied to magical lightning also, and the staff attracted the majority of it.

Kneeling several meters behind the sparking staff, Benjamin's left eye narrowed. (Kuso... Until I can use Genshi, I'm without my right eye... That means no depth perception... Better fade and play peek-a-boo for a bit.)

To Sorce's eyes, Benjamin went from kneeling to a half-crouch, then took a step to his left. The staff crossed both their lines of sight, but to Sorce it was like watching an old American cartoon. The staff was far too thin to conceal the gaijin man, yet as he stepped 'behind' it, he disappeared from sight.

A moment later, there was the slightest flicker of motion, barely visible out of the corner of Sorce's left eye.

Sorce didn't bother looking around. Invisibility or disappearance of any sort meant nothing to him. "Electro Arcana..." he muttered. "Universitas Analyzatus!"

The spell came into being, scanning the area. It was lower powered than what he usually used for research, which could tell you how many subatomic particles there were in a room, so he could maintain it.

Gotcha! he thought as the spell locked on to Harris's life signs, among other things no mage or anyone else usually thought of to conceal, like the presence of DNA molecules and the calcium in their bones. "Saggita Magica! Capturae!"

The spell spread out like a shotgun blast, aiming right for the area Harris was, the magic arrows spread to capture him even if he tried to dodge in any direction, including up...

Benjamin grit his teeth. (That didn't fool him for a second! Impressive... Still--)

--Shotgun blasts are like fireballs. They do the most damage close to the blast point, and cover most evasive motions. However, they also share they same weakness: damage occurs as a factor of exposure to the sphere of the blast.

Simply put, diving head on through such an attack actually minimizes the damage.

That is precisely what Benjamin did, and of the dozen or so 'arrows', only two shot straight for Ben. Both he punched aside, his ki shielded hands dispersing their constricting grip. The rest spread around him and crashed into the stage, the turn to follow him being too tight for them to make. That left him in a direct line toward Sorce, but Ben could see that the student was already setting himself to receive the charge.

(Well then: let's show him what Kouga Taijutsu is all about.)

With only a few seconds left to impact, Benjamin's haymaker rush dissolved into a whirling dervish of dizzying motion. From on his feet running, his hands hit the stage for a half-flip, during which he wheeled about with extended arms, spinning that into a cartwheel into a round-off into a half-crouching spinning backfist that abruptly had him airborne. In the final instant his left leg snapped out, around, and up, a high roundhouse apparently for Sorce's head...

...That suddenly wheeled his whole body, mid-air, into a downward thrusting sidekick that speared into Sorce's solar plexus with just enough force the knock the wind out of him -- and throw him on his a**.

Except there was way too much resistance to the impact for the body of a spell-casting school boy.

(What the...! Armor!?) Was the startled thought that slamed through Ben's brain as he frantically shifted his weight in mid-air, knowing he was vulnerable and would be for a whole 'nother second. He was trying to set up a Shukuchi to get him out of there... a Shukuchi he knew he couldn't use until his feet touched the stage.

As fast as Harris was, Sorce was faster. He had to move at the maximum speed of his body; Sorce attacked at the maximum speed of his thoughts. "Saggita Magica! Magic Missile Massacre."

At practically point blank range, there was no way to miss, even if Sorce was doing the casting on his back. Harris and Sorce's field of vision suddenly became very colorful as nigh uncountable Magic Arrows in all colors and elements materialized. The air arrows and some of the ice and dark arrows were set for capture. Others were keyed for cold damage and energy drain and disruption (to mess with the flow of ki, magic, electricity through neurons, etc). Fire, electric, sand, rock were for hitting hard, and gravity was for both containment and damage.

It would be very nice to look at if it wasn't pointed at you from five feet away and coming in from all angles, even the ground...

From the audience's point of few, Harris disappeared in a conflagration of light and sound. Many stood up in shock and awe from the sudden turnabout.

At ground zero, Benjamin propped himself up on his elbows and groaned, cuts and contusions covering his body under the tears in his shirt and slacks. (That frickin' HURT! Kid packs some serious punch... Without Eigi's SHIELD skill, I'd be out like a light.)

Slowly, he got to his feet. "...I gotta say, Marionne-kun: I'm impressed. Looks like its time for me to try something 'new'."

Using the cover of the still-hovering dust cloud, Benjamin whetted his fingers in his own blood. Quickly, he sketched out a particular kanji character on the palm of his right hand. Once finished, Benjamin drew his ki around his body, tugged at the surrounding air, and pushed. The dust cloud abruptly scattered.

Suddenly, Sorce could see his opponent again, and that Harris was in a full fighting stance: right side leading, knees bent and toes angled, left fist low and back, right palm presented toward Sorce, obscuring Harris' right eye from his line of sight.

Drawn on said right palm, in what looked like blood, was the kanji for 'fate'. "So tell me... D'ya feel lucky, punk?"

Benjamin grinned inwardly. The 'something new' bit was an absolute lie. Genshi is over four hundred years old, originating from a school for spear fighting under the House of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Benjamin's first disappearing act was a simple Bunshin effect, using depth perception to draw the eye away from his initial motion. Sorce hadn't even blinked at it, and immediately picked out his foe's new position and counterattacked. Originally, Ben had prepared a cruder, faster Genshi of his own devising as a sort of mid motion misdirection. However, he had found no opportunity to use it. Still holding the shaped ki, Benjamin had decided to use the real thing instead.

Genshi affects not the senses, but the memory. There are three kinds: short-term, long-term, and sensory memory. The nature of the first two is common knowledge, but that of sensory memory is not. This kind of memory very briefly stores the sensory characteristics of the environment. While its capacity is large, sensory memory lasts from a quarter second to three seconds at the most.

This illusionary skill uses ones ki to forcibly extend the target's sensory memory of the current moment by an additional second or two, affecting the mind's sensory receptors by way of the optic nerve. Because the senses themselves and the rest of the mind are untouched, the affected person perceives a 'stretched moment', and does not register any new changes to the environment until Genshi's effect fades. That gives a clever foe between three and five seconds where his opponent will not react.

Harris drew his right hand aside, revealing his right eye to Sorce's own. Ki flashed, and the world seemed to hold still as they stared each other down...

...Until something crashed into the back of Sorce's helmet, thoroughly rattling his head around inside it. Strong arms snapped around the student's waist in a Heimlich maneuver and brutally stole breath from Sorce's lungs. The world tilted wildly, and suddenly up was down, and down was up and falling on top of his already abused head.

Benjamin let go of the suplex-ed student, pushing off his feet to flip himself over Sorce to land on his feet. Immediately, he back-sprung another dozen steps back, giving himself room. Then he loosed his ki with a sound like a thunderclap. His voice was low, soft, but clear.

"Ware wa muteki ni..."
PostPosted: Fri Feb 08, 2008 7:01 pm

Sorce groaned as gravity reasserted itself his body, and he fell over hon his back. His helmet was scrolling warnings of how he'd just barely not gotten a concussion, and his lungs were still just realizing they could take in air again.

"Note to self," he muttered. "Redesign the helmet to protect against ALL forms of mental attack."

Stifling the urge to find out what happened to him now (there would still be enough energy residue later on for him to find out), and ignoring the pain in his head, he quickly let out another spell, at the same time kicking himself to his feet. "Refectorius Noctu Paeonia!"

The healing spell had taken effect by the time he hit the ground, even as he cast yet another spell. Since that was how he was playing it... "Opis Sursum!"

Electricity seemed to literally crackle across his body as he felt the spell powering him up. The world seemed to slow was his reaction time and perceptions increased meteorically. He twirled his staff experimentally, hearing the comforting crack of it going faster than sound.

Most martial artists considered it cheating, which was a big laugh for Sorce, since bones made from calcium are NOT strong enough to survive punching through a foot of metal and still be properly assembled afterwards, so who were they kidding? It was no different from them using their ki, or whatever they were calling it this week. Was it his fault he knew how to do it without having to go through the formality of putting his body through pure physical torture?

He took a pose... and swiftly reached into his pouch and started pulling out miscellaneous items faster than even martial artists eyes could see (he had the test videos to prove it, not to mention many bruised test subjects from the Shinmei Ryu). Lead pipes of varying lengths, what appeared to be wooden stakes, barbell weights, dumbbells and a few wooden mallets were merely a few of the things that came out breaking the sound barrier and whatever else they hit. This spell could let him run at 150kph. That meant his throwing speed was simply absurd...

Sorce knew at least one mallet hit Harris in the face...

Benjamin could hardly believe what was happening. The sheer nostalgia of it...

Part of learning Kouga Ryuu Taijutsu is perseverance; finding the willpower to withstand punishment while completing one's task. This is most crucial for Kosappo fighters. The power of Martial Arts Language is not to be underestimated, yet that power can be fully utilized only upon reaching the proper state of mind and body.

"Waga kage waza ni kana oo mono nashi..."

Really, Ben couldn't help but grin unflinchingly under the onslaught; it was that familiar to him. Of course, in training there were a dozen throwers; here, there was only one. While that impressed Benjamin more than anything else, he wasn't about to let his focus slip. Sorce's bombardment was vast and rapid, but consisted entirely of 'normal missiles' (in D&D terms). Without sufficient infusion of opposing ki/magic, they hit upon Ben's roiling ki aura and were swept aside, as said ki gathered and swelled. The onmitsu's entire being - mind, body, soul - came in focus around his voice and words.

"Waga houkou wa--" The final declaration came. "--zettai muteki!"

~BLAM~

Benjamin's vocalized ki collapsed into his body, and his aura erupted out to a three-meter sphere. For a moment the bombardment was held at bay, and he moved.

(Ore wa: Kouga Ryuu Kosappo, Eigi no Tsukite!)

Benjamin spun on one foot, ki blending with air and water, gathering around his other. He finished the turn and lashed out at Sorce in a roundhouse kick, as he finished carving a single kanji into the heart of his ki: cut. Wind roared and water whirled, as behind the kick trailed a narrow wavefront of howling destruction. The stage underneath buckled and warped as the wave arced across the intervening distance between combatants.

"SWORD!"

Sorce knew it was a bad thing that, considering his senses were moving at highly accelerated, Flash-esque, rate, the kick was coming at him a seemingly normal speed.

He barely managed to jump aside, but wasn't fortunate enough to dodge the move completely. The energy shockwave and the physical sonic boom both hit him, quite impolitely ignoring his armor and making him feel like he'd hit the ground from thirty feet with every square inch of skin. No, forty.

Through the readouts of his helmet warning of possible inner ear damage since it barely managed to cut in the aura-dampeners on time, Sorce couldn't help but watch the... attack... continue on, off the stage, gaining in height until it swept safely over the top of the audience stands...

...and tore an unmanned lookout completely off its tower. Kind of like a ragged machete would take the top off a straw dummy. Messily.

He couldn't help but gulp. Just a few milliseconds off...

Sorce, still powered by his spell, considered, turned, and efficiently kicked Harri's supporting leg right in the kneecap. There was the distinctive crack of broken bone, followed by a thud-- several, actually-- as the other guy fell, the remaining centrifugal energy from his kick causing him to spin around and bounce a couple of times. There was a gasp from the audience as blood began to pour...

...And suddenly turned clear, flowing from a make-shift water sack tied to the wodden plank that had been snapped by Sorce's kick and had thudded to the ground.

(Gotta love Utsusemi no Jutsu...) A light tap of one hand on his foe's shoulder allowed Benjamin to rotate in midair, back-kicking down at Sorce. Hit or miss, the backkick re-grounded him, and he spun about in a wheel-kick.

Both kicks, however, were part of a setup for the next shot. Drawing on the Hyogi, Benjamin carved two new kanji into the heart of his ki: blade, fist. It was a pretty standard body blow, but ki and air gathered and spun about it, shooting off along the line of the punch. Even blocked, it would carry Sorce quite a distance across the stage.

"HAR KEN!"

Not that Benjamin was going to quit there. He leaped over the line of his last attack, arcing in toward Sorce from above. (How can I take this kid out without crippling or killing? Some kind of illusion, but with that helmet covering his eyes and ears, it'll hafta trigger on touch... Maybe...) He began making hand seals, the sun at his back obscuring them from easy view.

Sorce took the punch in his body armor, the ki making him feel it even through the padding, and the air sending him skidding until he hit the railing. With a groan, his Opis Sursum spell finally dropped. It was a testament to how well Sorce had designed it that it had managed to hold out for so long.

Anyone else found have gone all "Damn! Now I must use my super technique, which I was saving for a special occasion, like my first date!" and been all emo and super-saijan moaning about it. Sorce however, wasn't the sort to get all dramatic. He merely acknowledged the necessity of using this particular spell.

"Electro Arcana," he intoned quickly as Harris hung in the air. "Nocturna Aetheris!"

The darkness suddenly poured around him, pooling beneath his feet, becoming liquid-like and thick. In the blink of an eye, it poured upwards, encasing Sorce completely in a ten-foot wide sphere. It seemed to have the texture of steel, and frankly radiated with energy to anyone who could feel. The temperature of the area around began to drop as it began to suck up the ambient kinetic of the molecules in the area as well as magical energy.

Thick tentacles of darkness suddenly shot out and separated from the sphere, resolving itself into what a layman could consider a shadow puppet, hovering in the air. It had a blank black face, clad in a dark cloak. It's body was lean, its temperature nonexistent.

The cloak split into thin, narrow, razor-sharp ribbons of shadow energy that flashed towards Harris, wrapping around his limbs and pulling his hands apart. No blood was drawn, but Harris could feel his skin getting colder as the ribbons sucked in warmth. To his surprise and mild horror, it also began to drain away his ki.

The sphere, meanwhile, began to glide around and away from him, towards safer ground...

[The N.A spell is darkness based, and the constructs aren't fooled by illusions, since they sense shadows instead of light (lack of light in your lungs, inside closed mouth, heart, etc.), as well as energy (magic, heat, kinetic, etc.). Theres no escaping with visual illusions, since they can tell if it's real or not.]

Still holding the incomplete illusion inside his ki, Benjamin tested the dark bonds against his physical strength and knew that escape was out. A shiver of fear ran through him as he felt his Kosappo ki aura being ripped away.

However, Benjamin ruthlessly surpressed it. (I could try expelling more ki than this darkness can absorb, but... that would leave me incredibly weak. Blast it, what can I do...?)

"Deliberate errors and minor losses are the means by which to bait the enemy; control and isolate their general, rattle his mind, and then strike."

('The Art of War' by Sun Tzu... Genius, absolute genius! But how? How can I...) Time slowed as Benjamin thought furiously. (Illusions are out... Which leaves me back at my Kosappo. But what... Wait... Come on, think! Remember! The Saigen Ryuu Cho [Genesis Style Scrolls]... the last skill listed... Was defensive! And far more than Eigi's Shield! Can I pull it off?)

To Sorce's eyes, the gaijin's visible ki aura was drawn off by the spell, and his movements rapidly began to slow as his remaining ki was drained. In under a minute, Harris hung limply in the shadow puppet's grip, the flow of ki down to a trickle, then nothing.
PostPosted: Wed Feb 13, 2008 3:00 pm

Sorce knew better than to trust appearances in a fight. He stay within his sphere, protected, while he let his puppet do the work. The bonds that held Harris thickened, and suddenly the puppet was surrounding Harri's trapping him completely within his own sphere. He could feel the energy being fed to him increase as the darkness covered more surface area.

Drawn off, huh? Sorce thought sarcastically from inside his sphere, directing his construct's movements. And yet still having all this energy to drain? Who does he think he's kidding... Interesting that he's managing to hold some back, but then, it's not like the spells at max. I don't want to kill him...

And he didn't. At max, this spell could draw off someone's life force, soul energy, and practically every over force that makes the body tick.

With the mental equivalent of a flick of his wrist, Sorce threw Harris' sphere as far off the stage as possible and underwater. Already they were starting the countdown. Even if he managed to break out of the energy-draining construct, he doubted the teacher would be able to react in time to make it back to the stage. His body temperature would have dropped to inconvenient levels by them, and there's all that water to fight against...

About ten seconds later, after the count has finished, he released Harris' sphere, letting his slightly blue, shaking body bob up from the slightly iced waters...

Benjamin gently reached beyond Kabuto's defense, into the realm of awareness. Sensing no more pull on his ki, he sent it out and found his foe's position...

...And flooded his body with his ki, forcing it into agonizing motion. He burst off the water's service, launched back up onto the stage where he staggered the landing, yet forced his body to continue. Drawing up the stored illusion, Benjamin finished the weave and slid it down his arm, out to his fingertips.

Harris lunged for Sorce, reached out, touched the hollow of the boy's throat... And suddenly Sorce's mouth and throat were telling him that he was choking on a helmet full of water!

Benjamin stumbled a bit, backing up, watching the boy try to sort out his new predicament through his own panic. Until his ears finally cleared, and he realized that the announcer was screaming that the match was over! "Crappity! Um, sh!t... Right."

Tossing finesse out the window, Benjamin proceeded to 'tear' the illusion off of Sorce's nervous system. Tactile illusions are tenacious like that...

The boy's senses dissolved like a TV signal dissolving into static, then cleared a moment later. He found himself looking up at the Makai no Sensei himself, who was looking incredibly chagrined. "Ah, sorry 'bout that. I thought... Never mind."

Harris helped Sorce back to his feet. There was a looooong pause.

"So... Um, who won?"
PostPosted: Fri Feb 22, 2008 7:03 pm

"Um, me," Sorce said as he took off his helmet and suppressed the urge to cough water out of his lungs. "You were out of the ring for more than ten seconds, so..."

"..." *TWITCH* *TWITCH*

The camera pans out to view the match arena from the outside. scream "RING OUUUUUT!?!"

Abruptly, Benjamin burst out laughing. It started slow, but built up, until his was practically whooping. It took several minutes, but he finally wound down. "Haaah... So basically, you tricked me out of a win, simply by using my own lack of knowledge (the match rules) against me. Heh. Damn fine work, Marionne-kun. Damn fine."

At that, Harris spun on his feet, staggered juuuust slightly, recovered his shoes and coat, and left the arena.
