Damn, Reeks was a bit more impressive than he remembered. James grinned leisurely as she started speeding towards him. Was that a fleet feet? Impressive.

Still, James really couldn't have her moving forward. Boss's orders and all that. He quickly conjured up a flaming Sherwood, complete with an impressive splay of nine burning arrows. In a fluid movement, James tilted the magic bow so it was parallel to the ground, aimed in Aerykah's general direction, and fired all nine streaks of flame at once.

Too bad James forgot that Sherwood arrows only travel in one direction.

⊰aerykah - sampson⊱
Faster, Aery, faster. You got this. was running through her mind as she crossed the clearing towards her ex. Smelling the scent of burning, she glanced up to see more fire coming in her direction. They were shaped like arrows. However, all... six? seven? ten? s**t. There was so much fire, and she had so much speed. Trying to adjust her path, she suddenly felt burning on her arm.

Glancing over, she saw deep burns. A direct hit. That wouldn't mess up her plan too bad, or she hoped. It wasn't her good punching arm, at least. Wincing, she shot a gust of cooler air towards the burn, trying to cool it as she ran. Luckily whatever arrows he shot only went in one direction. It opened her playing field up some. Those burns would sting a lot, but Aerykah had the feeling that they'd be the least of her injuries after this recklessness. "You have shitty aim." she commented, not sure if he would hear her.

Seeing him grow closer, Aerykah pushed her hands forward, sending a large gust of air towards James, trying to throw him off kilter as she tried to get the last five hundred feet in unharmed.

Ian's arms were killing him, but compared to Darren's regular beatings this was nothing. Icarus had given him an opening, a literal one, and he wasted no time in thumbing the channeling button. The whole controller started to heat, but Ian ignored it, focusing on the earth that was cracked open. He could sense, deep, deep down, there was heat, something he could draw on. All he had to do was draw it out.

Come on, come on, he thought desperately, pouring more power than he should've into the controller. The screen display flickered as the PS Vita started to overheat, but Ian kept pushing, directing some power to Socket instead to help with the heat overflow. He was dimly aware of Yvonne escaping. Good. One less thing to worry about.

It was only a few seconds, but to Ian it felt like forever before the ground started heating up under the soles of Ian's boots and the crack started glowing orange as magma bubbled up from underneath. For only a moment's work, Ian felt surprisingly drained, but he wasn't going to give up now. A thought struck him, and his fingers started pressing the Vita's buttons and directed most of his magic into Socket's air waves system to radiate his own magic and send it further. Ian forced one more burst of power into the controller and the whole clearing started to heat.

Ian's vision blurred for a second before snapping back into focus. He needed a second to recuperate. Ian could only hope Icarus could take it from here.

Melanie ignored Yvonne. What reason did she have to pursue her? Her orders were to stop them from advancing, not slaughter them like pigs.

Besides, she didn't have time to worry about that. What she was concerned about was the crack in the earth and how the ground was starting to get hot. It only took her a second to grasp the situation. Interelement cooperation. Stone and fire. Smart. They intended to take away what they thought was her biggest advantage. Morons.

But she refused to let this foolishness continue. Melanie didn't bother ghosting this time, relying on being too fast to follow, and instead shot forward, knocking Icarus off balance by simply kicking his feet out from under him and sending the controller Ian was holding flying with a well-aimed bump. That had to be his controller, so without it he was about as harmless as a mundane. The only one she really needed to concern herself with now was the pink one, so Melanie solidified her blade again and turned her attention on him. A stab in the gut and he would dissolve from the inside out. Messy, but effective.

Melanie took a step towards Icarus and then frowned. The ground was heating up very fast. Too fast to have been guided by just that one tiny controller. She'd missed something. Something important. No, it was worse than just missing something.

She'd made a mistake.

__ Thank god Yvonne had listened to him. He could only pray that Aerykah would finish up fast with whoever the blonde a*****e she was facing off against and catch up to them quickly.

Icarus ignored the way he could feel acid eat away at his muscles, thinking about a million other things than the dull panic that was already crawling it's way into his body. The growing heat underneath his feet made him give a sharp inhale.

Praying that Yvonne wasn't planning on trying anything stupid in case things continued to get nasty, Icarus simply allowed himself to fall to the earth. There was no point in stopping Melanie from doing what he was going to end up having to do anyways.

Icarus braced himself on the ground with his hands and began to channel through them immediately, ignoring the fact he could see Melanie's blade reappear in the corner of his eye. Ian may have only had one way to channel his magic, but Icarus had multiple. He wasn't going to waste his time trying to defend himself from Melanie when he knew any barrier he put up would just be eaten away by acid.

Like my goddamn leg is, ********, ********, why did I channel magic through it ******** I think I made it worse I'm such a dumb piece of s**t--

Underneath his hand, Icarus channeled a fierce burst of magic. He willed the ground to obey to him, to melt underneath the heat that Ian had drawn up. The only areas that Icarus didn't touch was the ground both him and Ian were standing on.

Obey, Icarus thought, jaw tensing. Bend to my will, make this easier, please, please.

Melanie actually shouted as all the grass in the field caught on fire at once. Lavawielding, she realized. These brats actually pulled off interelement cooperation. This was bad. The earth was shifting underneath her feet, and she could actually see it glowing red. If she didn't get off the ground now she was going to be roasted Melanie.

Still, she had to do something about this. The glasses boy was unarmed, but a mystic was another story. All Melanie had to do, though, was just let her acid to the work, but judging from how determined this boy was the amount she'd slashed into his legs wasn't enough. Very well. She'd take a more direct approach.

Melanie planned her route and moved at high, fleet feet speeds. The small, lithe girl bounded closer to Icarus and slashed her acidic blade, cutting a long gash in his chest. That would stop him in his tracks, once the acid ate through the bone and to the heart. With her next step she set off a Bump underneath her foot, sending her rocketing into the sky and landing on the treetops.

Well, this sucked. But on the bright side, the pink one would be dead soon enough and the glasses one was powerless. Melanie turned away from the bubbling, liquefying field. If those two were dealt with... where was the girl?

James's grin vanished as Aerykah dodged most of his arrows. ********. ******** this wasn't good. He took a step back, he needed to regroup, he needed his team-- But they weren't there. James was on his own. He didn't have Andrew's airwielding to negate hers, he didn't have Lara to shield him properly, he didn't have anyone but himself.

Aerykah's gust of air knocked the Tank off balance and he pinwheeled to regain it. Aerykah was getting closer. James only had a second to make a decision.

He chose to swear.

Ian's vision sharpened and for a second or two everything seemed fine. And then his controller was launched out of his hands and things started going very wrong.

Ian didn't see where his controller landed but he could only hope it didn't sink into the lava; that would be absolute hell to rebuild. (As luck would have it, since little else is on Ian's side most of the time, the controller spun into the trees and landed away from the lava zone.) Fighting the panic bubbling in his stomach, Ian turned to Icarus to see what to do now, only to see Icarus land on his a**, but his hands were still glowing, the ground was heating up, they had a chance.

Ian shouted in surprise as the grass set fire, but it all went ou very quickly as the grass was totally vaporized and the ground shifted and glowed. We actually did it, Ian thought in amazement. Lavawielding. We did it. But now wasn't the time for celebration; unless Ian contributed, the lava wouldn't hold up and he couldn't do that without a controller. In a swift move, Ian snatched Socket out of the air. The robot was struggling to go after the controller, but Ian managed to pop the emergency service panel and disconnected the wire that connected Socket to the controller. He didn't need a remote controlled robot, he needed a channeler, and Socket was the closest he could get.

Satisfied, Ian turned just in time to see a red blur. And then he saw the blood.

                                  "ICARUS!"

She grinned as she approached him. Wait a second, the mighty Tank was offset by just a gust of wind? Damn, he had lost his touch.

Throwing all of her might into her speed, she clenched a fist. Aerykah had an opening. She was upon him quickly, and as she slowed, a punch reached his face - infused with her magick.

"You underestimated me!" she shouted, getting the sweet relief of punching him. Knowing that he was the Tank, she knew he would come back like a loyal puppy for more, but having him be offset would be a huge tactical advantage for her.

Here was hoping the rest of the fight would go this well... though Aery made no bets.

Yvonne didn't dare move from where she stood. Her back pressed up against the tree she was hiding under. She was trying as hard as she could to keep from groaning in pain. This thing hurt like hell. The skin around her cut was red and angry. The acid had been on her long enough to start eating away at it, and her eyes pricked with tears at the effort of keeping silent.

She stiffened when she heard something skitter across the forest floor. Her eyes flickered toward it, but she quickly realized it was just Socket's controller. Socket's controller. That meant that Ian was unarmed. Not good. She quickly bent down to pick it up when she heard the second noise.

At the shout of Icarus's name, Yvonne immediately froze. That was Ian. That was Ian yelling Icarus's name. She felt her blood run cold as her head swiveled up -

and her eyes locked onto Melanie's back.

Yvonne estimated she had about a two seconds before Melanie turned and saw her. The field was on fire now - could Ian even put it out without his controller? If Icarus was down he couldn't help either. She'd never heard Ian scream like that before. Ice trickled down her spine.

Without hesitation, she dodged around the tree and started running back toward the field. She didn't care if she had to set up rapid fire turtles and burn her legs to ash if it meant making sure Icarus and Ian were safe. Melanie would be able to see her now, but she didn't care. This was suicidal enough already. Just another thing to throw in with the rest. She weaved between the trees.

__ Icarus felt a rush of relief as the grass set on fire, in too much pain from the muscle in his leg slowly dissolving to even bother giving a shout like the other two had as the ground melted.

Somehow, they had managed to do it.

Icarus concentrated on keeping his hands on the ground, making sure the heat didn't touch the expanse of ground that both him and Ian were currently touching. He noticed the fleet feet but found himself unable to care, thinking that it was impossible for him to run from Melanie anyways with his leg injured as it is.

Unable to do anything but react, Icarus doubled over himself as pain shot through his chest. A loud shout of pain left him as he clutched onto his chest, shaking as his body began to give way to the acid. God, it hurt, it hurt, it hurt, and Icarus thought he was going to die but he was used to thinking that sort of thing when it came to pain--

Ian's shout barely registered in his ears, his vision going fuzzy and blotting out occasionally with pain. Icarus shook but didn't cry.

"Ian," Icarus hissed. "If you let that b***h get away or touch Yvonne because you're too busy panicking over me, I swear to god I will never forgive you."

With that Icarus collapsed on the ground, unable to do anything more in his efforts to restrain himself from screaming.

If one good thing had come out of Ian's being hexed, it was that he found he could do very well under the right pressure. Two of his friends being very near to dying was nothing if pressurizing.

Ian snapped out of his panic, Icarus's words bringing him back to his senses. He needed to think, and now that the woman's back was turned this was the perfect time to examine the facts. She'd turned her back, meaning she thought that Icarus was incapacitated (which was true) and so was Ian (which was not). She doesn't know Socket's a channeler, Ian realized. I have the advantage of surprise.

The next complication came crashing through the trees; Ian could glimpse Yvonne weaving through the forest trying to get back. She must've heard Ian yell and came back to see what was wrong. This was bad, because the woman had spotted her immediately. Ian could see her glove smoking green. Somehow the sight of it washed away all of Ian's panic, and his face hardened with determination.

"Oh hell no," the boy snarled, and Socket began to glow orange in his hands. The bot's claws reached forward and a fireball sparked into existence between the claws. He fired, taking the recoil pretty well, and the fireball shot towards the Pact member and just missed her face. (Ian's aim had never been the best.)

The woman turned towards Ian, and even with the mask covering half her face Ian could tell she looked pissed. He was about to become a target, but that was fine. He could defend himself and Yv could not. Step one, draw her attention away from Yvonne. Step two, take this b***h down. Step one was accomplished. Ian adjusted his grip on Socket and another fireball appeared between the robot's claws. Time to move on to step two.

The girl moved. What an idiot. Melanie clicked her fingers, casting the shield first and then the acid bubbles forth, gathering and roiling in her hand. This would be so easy, all she had to do was aim for the stomach now that she wasn't trying to not kill them. These kids were looking for a fight, and Melanie would gladly give it to them.

She raised her hand to take aim and the fireball shot across her face. Melanie turned in shock - the nerd kid was holding the robot thing that had been following him around. That's a channeler!? What the hell kind of channeler is that? It didn't matter. She was under fire, and she'd turned her back on the enemy. Unforgivable! Ezrael would've flayed her alive, if he was still around. The girl could wait, at least for now. She hurled the ball of acid she'd been preparing towards him, but he ducked under it.

Melanie frowned. Since when was her aim so off? It was the heat haze, she realized, from the churning lava that the field had turned into. It was throwing off her aim and tricking her eyes. Too bad Andrew's not here, or he could blow the haze away, she thought ruefully. Or perhaps James could mess with the lava itself, it's part fire after all.

But Melanie was alone, and she had to rely on herself. If she couldn't properly aim, she reasoned, she'd simply hit both of the boys with a ball of acid so massive it couldn't possibly miss. So Melanie held out an arm and the acid began to churn, getting larger and larger. In her other hand she generated a smaller ball and hurled it at the girl anyway. No point in taking chances.

James went flying and crashed into the trees, and for several long moments it seemed he wouldn't return.

And then he reappeared, picking his way through the flora and pulling twigs and leaves from his hair. "Jeez, Reeks, that's gonna leave a bruise," he complained, rubbing his jaw. "If I knew you hit that hard I'd've gotten serious from the start."

In truth, James was pissed. Sure it was his job to get hit, but it was sort of an insult to get punched into the trees by his stupid jailbait ex. Plus she punched a lot harder than he expected, but she didn't need to know that. What were those tactics that the others always used? Piss off the enemy. Force them to make a mistake. Good thing pissing people off was James's specialty.

James flicked his wand and a ball of flame gathered on the end. No more stupid bravado; if he didn't focus he might actually lose. And that sure as hell wasn't going to happen. Unit Thirteen didn't lose. Ever.

So James launched himself at Aerykah, faster than he looked. The first thing he did was sink his fist into her stomach as payback for that punch, and the second was bringing up the tip of his wand to her shoulder and shooting at close range. Healer or not, that had to hurt like a b***h.

Yvonne saw Ian aiming at Melanie and finally understood the situation. Melanie hadn't realized that Socket was Ian's channeler, not the controller. She turned back around to see if his fireball had hit, but was greeted with the rapidly advancing ball of acid. Eyes widening in alarm, she quickly generated a turtle. The acid tore through it like it was nothing.

"OW, OH MY GOD, ******** YOU!!!"

Her hip seared with pain and she went down hard on her injured arm, eliciting another shouted curse. She felt around for her wand, gripping it tightly. There were scattered rocks around her from Icarus's earthwielding. Yvonne angrily levitated them, running more on adrenaline than anything else at this point, and flicked them roughly at their enemy. Her eyes were spilling over with tears as she watched the ball of acid in Melanie's hand grow bigger. Most of her shots went wide. She couldn't stand to look.

"IAN she- SHE- hhrg," her voice warbled. Ian would have to be blind to not see what Melanie was planning. Yvonne tried to push herself up and failed. Icarus's cry of pain rang through her ears. She managed to get to her knees and braced herself against the earth with her good arm. weak weak weak get up get up. Stand. She couldn't.
