I know Lost Odyssey is great and all but, should we even be talking about it here? I'm at a loss there... neutral

It's from the creator of Final Fantasy, and it's a rival of Final Fantasy. Therefore, it can be mentioned just as Final Fantasy can be mentioned in the Lost Odyssey thread.

Really? I thought they had to be kept separate for that reason, cuz they're the competition of each other. Oh well! rolleyes
Ok, here's something to discuss:
Do you think the FF saga has been milked enough as it is? If so, why do you think so?

I think everything goes in cycles. There isn't quite as much fervor as there was, say, when FF:AC came out, and the fanfic archives are fairly quiet at the moment--but whenever a good writer posts a new chapter the interest picks up again.
And when a new game comes out, then... yum! smile
I've dropped HUGE hints to my family that I want a gaming system on which I can play most of the FF stuff. Hod has promised to back me up on that, and they have until October 1 to get their birthday act together. smile
Jasta, Who will be portraying Rufus ShinRa this weekend... Mwah-hah-hah...

The series started to go downhill after FFIX. Square Enix realised this after FFX wasn't as successful and/or well-loved as the others, and then they made the mistake of making XI online. Final Fantasy XI should not have been online. It should have been a normal RPG and the MMO should have JUST been Final Fantasy Online. The fact that it's a pay monthly subscription has put a lot of people off despite there still being a lot of players. They'd have a lot more of us on XI if it was free to play and added a marketplace where certain items and quests could be bought (several MMOs do this).
When XII came out, few people liked it as a Final Fantasy game. They still loved the game, but it just didn't feel like "Final Fantasy" really. Not to me and several other people (and probably many more as well). It reminded me of Vagrant Story a lot, just with up to date graphics.
For years, lovers of Final Fantasy VII kept demanding a sequel and eventually we got it in the form of Advent Children. Then, suddenly Square realised something else when they brought that out. "The series isn't doing as well as we'd like, so we'll start milking it for all it's worth". That's why we've seen an additional FFVII sequel/spin off - Dirge of Cerberus, and now two prequels: Before Crisis (which is only available on mobile phones in Japan) and Crisis Core which isn't yet out in the UK. As well as that, you hae FFX-2, and now FFXII: Revenant Wings. They're also re-making the older games or re-releasing them. I and II have been re-released in the form of Origins on the PS1, GBA, and now the PSP. FFIII was completely re-made and re-released on the DS, IV and V were re-released on the PS1 and now on the GBA, and VI was re-released on the PS1, and now also th GBA.
Now why would Square be doing all this really? Yes, people wanted the old games re-released because getting a hold of the old consoles and versions of the games themselves is getting increasingly difficult because they're no longer being made. However, all of this only started to come about on a BIG scale when they didn't reap that much success out of X.
They'll keep milking it for as long as they can. I'm actually wondering if they'll end up making spin-offs or sequels for VIII and IX as well. It might actually be interesting to see those things. However, take a look at Pirates of the Caribbean. They made one film, and got a lot of money from it. So, they knew they could make more from it, so they made Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. We now hear rumours of even more being made. Companies will continue to milk every single penny out of a franchise until it simply stops making money.
If I make an educated guess, I don't think it'll last. Unless Square can bring back the true Final Fantasy charm that Sakaguchi and Uematsu gave to it, then it'll continue on the down slope. That's why Lost Odyssey is the new competition. It's not a perfect game, and doesn't have 100% of the charm that Final Fantasy, but it's got some very obvious bits and pieces in it and Sakaguchi has the right idea most definitely. He's testing the water at the moment, and I can see his intentions just by playing it. As I said before, I think my ex might have a point. If Square continue to slip up and end up milking the series to the point where we're all just going to sigh and get bored with it all, which they're already doing, Sakaguchi may end up just buying the Final Fantasy franchise back. If he does, then we'll see everything we loved about the series return. Guaranteed. I can see that through Lost Odyssey.
I don't care that they're in competition with one another, the intentions are actually very clear. Sakaguchi created Final Fantasy and Square ended up ruining it in several ways, that's why he quit the company in the first place. Why shouldn't he want to bring back what Final Fantasy fans loved about the series? Weird and wonderful creatures, the overworld, fun (not tedious) mini-games and quests, actually being able to control the vehicles you take possession of, turn-based combat, bosses that you needed to work out strategies for. All of those things are just SOME of the things that make RPGs true to themselves and therefore traditional. Matt (my ex) said to me the other day, and I totally agree with him, that nowadays amazing graphics have taken over and games are not as fun as they used to be because of it. The graphics and systems of games like FFIX and before in a big way are responsible for that old charm, and amazing graphics are replacing that gameplay element really. I must say that Losy Odyssey has given an insight into nex gen gaming which could see the return of what we all miss.
Am I digressing from Final Fantasy? Yes, a bit, but Hypno as you asked about whether or not Square have milked Final Fantasy enough comes into this in a very big way.

I wish they'd do more merchandising--Squenix, that is. At the con I saw some great non-official FF: stuff, including t-shirts, art, and so on. None of it "official from the copyright holder", but great--and people snapped them up. Yet the stuff on the website is the same old-same old... and kinda boring, as well as expensive. They also didn't think consistency: the official version of Kadaj's motorcycle isn't big enough for the action figure to ride on, as is the case with Cloud and Fenrir. So that says to me they didn't do a consistency check... very frustrating.

Great answer Mel! I agree with you but I keep hoping they won't milk FFVII to death. It's nice to find out more about the FFVII story though, cuz there are still lots of things I was curious about like, where Zack came from and how he befriended Cloud and, why Cloud decided to become his friend. It's true that the main story of FFVII does tell a little of what happened but it ain't a lot.

This is why I am in need of a PSP - so I can buy Crisis Core when it comes out in Europe!
I agree on you saying that FFVII shouldn't be milked to death. However, Square will do anything if it means ringing the money out of it.
Did you see the interview with Sakaguchi I posted on the Lost Odyssey thread. "I'm willing to break them into pieces, crush them at my feet."

Though I've not played many final fantasy games and I don't actually know their story lines even I'm gettng exited for the FF IV remake on DS. For those of you who don't know FF IV is being redone with better graphics and new controls and put on the Nintendo DS.

Yeah, I heard about that one. I'm curious as to why they released it on the DS. Didn't they already do that with FF4 on the GBA in the first place? I don't get it...

Well yes they did release it on gba already but that was exactly the same as the origional, the DS version will be very similar but of course it will be put into 3 dimensions and the controls will be changed around to fit the DS. So instead of seeing the pixilated version, completely devoid of amazing cutscenes you get to see the vibrant 3-d-ness in all it's glory razz

Yeah, I figured as much. Hmm, I wonder if having the FFIV cartridge inside your DS while playing the DS version of FFIV will have some sort of advantage for players or what... Wouldn't that be awesome? I mean, shouldn't the owners of the GBA version get some sort of reward for also getting the DS version? I happen to think so! 3nodding

Do any of you have Dirge of Cerberus? I need some screen caps from the beginning... someone told me it clearly shows Tseng (who... was kinda almost dead if you follow proper continuity, but OH WELL...) taking someone in white out of ShinRa Tower on a stretcher--and of course we know who THAT must be. smile El Presidente Adorable... Yay Rufus!
Anyway... smile If someone could get me screen caps I would be ever so grateful! I don't have Dirge yet...

Sorry Jasta, my PS2 is KAPUT and there's no chance of fixing it. I am certainly not getting a new or used one anytime soon so, no Dirge for me either. rolleyes
I hear it's not very good anyway, or at least that's what the folks at EGM say...
