Thats how i saw you as acting. And if not arrogence, then insolence. You're clame that you can beat me in ANY debate was quite insolent. Yes, there are debates you will win, and there will be a few, a moderet few, that you probably wont.

Arrogance would be to claim that I could beat anyone in a debate. However this I know is not true. Because there are many people out there who can debate better than I can. Debating has nothing to do with the material and all to do with how it's presented.

If you were to train more in terms of debating than no I might not feel the same way. However as it stands right now I don't feel threatened or really have any doubt in my mind that I couldn't win a debate with you. That wouldn't mean that I knew more about the subject than you did, because like I said, there's probably a lot out there that you know quite a bit more than I do. However I'm better at the actual debating.

It's not a slight on you at all, it's simply that our intelligences are in different areas.
I'm sorry, but, in this case, given the definition of arrogance you gave, I have to agree with him.

You don't have to be making unfounded claims of superiority to be arrogant. You just have to make claims. You are. You are claiming to be superior to Pyro in the area of debate. Thus, you are being arrogant, however well founded that arrogance might be.

You're missing the last part. "in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions". Now I did in in claims, yes. However as you have already said I did it in claims, which I supported. Therefore the claims are not "presumptuous", as they are backed up by reasoning and proof. Nor is it assumptions because once again, it's back up be reasoning and proof.

If you are saying that this is arrogance than you're saying that every person who has to write a test and has said, "I know my material and I know I'm going to do well." is being arrogant.

Not necesarily the claim to beat any one, but the way you claimed it. You claimed you could beat me in any debate. You do not have to claim no one can beat you to sound arrogant. You just need to have an "attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions." And mabey you didn't, but at the time it certainly sounded like you did.

You can actualy be arrogant towards a single individual, or a whole group. Its how some bullies at middle/elementry/hihg schools act. They can be absolutly fine and dandy, and even friendly and feel on equal standing with others, but they'll think they are better then that one single person/group of people they seem to pick on the most. Right? I would say so, but it also sounds alot like impudence, and mabey I'm just confusing myself now.

Your claim now that is was a staement of confodence. The way you made it known though came out as a statement of insolence, or at the very least, impudence. I honostly felt oyu could have stated what was wrong with with out calling it bullshit.

I'm aware how a debate is conducted. But in the very begining I wasn't tryign to debate. I was statign something that i felt was a fact and so i treated it as such. When not debatign I don't feel the need to treat as opinoin what I feel to be fact. I don't want a repeat of lastnight, but you did the some thing.

Firstly, I just answered the first part in the post to Andy, so I'm not going to retype all of that. Secondly the reasoning for my wording, as I've already stated, was in response to your stating that I was threatened by you. You want to make a statement like that and then make anaologies about how bullies use my tactics? Give me a break.

Yes, I could have stated what was wrong, without calling it bullshit. However every single person here knows, that just how I debate. When I debate I go into "debate mode" and I'm harsh and I say things point blank. I've always done this and I'm not going to stop doing it just because you take things personally far too often.

At the beginning you started the debate, I'm afraid. I posted my opinion and I would have been fine with that however you challenged it and so I expanded.

Quote:
Sex being just a physicle act, in which our perceptions make of it what we will, is your opinoin. One stated as a fact. You did the exact same thign I did. You have an opinoin that you see as fact and stated it as such. Its your opinoin though. Any evidence you give to try an validate it as fact will be nothign more then personal proof, things you use to validate your reasoning to your self. Every thing you stated above, including the bullshit comment which I cut out, is nothign more then an opinoin with personal reasoning. There is really no point in even continuing this debate though...we couldn't even call it a debate, more like bikering. Much of what was said about sex was pure opinoin, and its futile to debate opinoins.

I'd also like to clerify your last statment. Do you mean we're of two diffrening intellectual mind sets, or that your intelligence is greater then mine?

That's because when it comes right down to the nitty gritty sex IS just a physical act. Sex is intercourse, scienfically that's all you can prove about it. You can say "sex is a physical act which has a lot of emotions tied up around it" and that may be true for you, however that doesn't change that all sex is, in itself, is intercourse. Sex to me is the physical act without an emotional tie, basically. However by stating what sex is without stating the emotions around it (a lot, some or none) isn't stating my opinion, it's stating all that can be stated without being opinionated or biased.

And as I said before, our intelligences are in different areas. You're not more or less intelligent than myself (that I'm aware of) you're just intelligent in a different area. Mine happens to be partly in debating. It's just the same as my sister though, Leigha can't write worth anything nor can she do math, however she could sell a ******** fridge to an eskimo.

Sex is, essentially, just a physical act--so is, e.g., running over a kitten. The emotions involved vary from person to person, and though you could classify some as "wrong" in the latter example, because something gets hurt, sex is not so cut-and-dried, morally.

Sure, it gets associated with love because it's something nice you can do for someone because you love them--like giving them a foot massage or buying them flowers. Some people do things like that just because they're getting the same in return, some do them out of the goodness of their hearts. Usually it's a mix of the two.

Point is, the only argument that there's something special about sex (just vaginal sex? Oral as well? Do circle jerks count?) is a religious one. What makes it special? You can create another human from it? That doesn't strike me as special as two people raising a child together; I see that as more important than creating a life in the first place.

And to tie this into the original argument, opposing sex education because sex is sacred is a religious stance, and religion should not influence public education.

You DID make presumptions. You have not debated me on every single subject, so you can not make the claim you can beat me in ANY debate.

Once again Miranda, you're arguing an opinoin. Scientificly sex is an action. But I've never agreed with how science is being used today. In other words. I don't agree that sex is nothing more then an action that causes chainreactions of chemicles in the brain. I agree that its a physicle action, but I do not agree that it is just a physicle action. In other words. Its my opinoin. Trying to argue and refute my opinoin is futile and you will get no where. I don't know why I feel the way I do. Even before I converted to christianity in 2001 I saw sex as, mabey not sacred, but more then a physicle action.

And Zin. I wasn't being arrogant about my claim that Miranda couldn't beat me in ANY debate. The word "any" was in refrence to her using the word "any" which was in refrence to the word "all" which was being used to describe "ever single." And no, she can not beat me in every single debate. There are subjects she couldn't beat me on, and there are subjects she can. I don't know why you thought I was being arrogant in my claim the she can't beat me in ANY debate.

It can be broken down simply as follows:
"I can beat you in any debate"

"No, no you can't. There may be some areas you're better at then I am, but not all of them"

I also never apposed sex education. I have no idea where you got that. I stated in two posts that I agreed with sex ed. I stated how ever I disagree with the current eaching methods, and that they need to be revised.

I'm not sure if Abstinence only education follows under an "education" standpoint. You're supposed to know about all aspects of sex in a sex-ed course, not just the ones that are slanted with a personal opinion of how sex should be presented.

And he never said that he supported abstinence only education, Adrian. He just said he thinks the current program needs to be fixed, as, frequently, it is implied that, as long as you are having safe sex, sex is fine and dandy to have with anyone for whatever reason.

I believe he's the one who said that only the scientific parts of sex should be taught in schools: Contraception, the success rates of contraceptive techniques, STDs, and of course, abstinance as the only absolute preventative. Meaning, the ethics of sex should be left to the parents.

Yes Adrian. I never said anythign about abstenince only. Every one assumes that I support it because I'm a christ-professing republican...or atleast it really seems that way. Not once did I say we shouldn't teach contraceptives. We should. Not once did I say we shouldn't teach about STDs and the rsisk. We should.

No, Miranda stated that. I agree, to a point. But I also beleive that responcibilty of sex should be taught, not just responcibility during sex. I honostly don't beleive the school should be teaching sex ed, but its the only alternative because many parents refuse to do it. I'm glad my mom gave me the talk before my middle school sex-ed classes. I'm also glad I refused to go to sex ed the fifth time I was suppoed to take it. (My family moved around quite a bit during my middle school years, so I ended up tackign several sex ed classes for osme odd reason. I refused to go to the last because I had had enough.)

I agree that parents really should be the ones teaching their children about sex, especially the ethics of sex. Though health classes should go over the biology of sex, including STDs (Don't you think learning about STDs on a biological level would help convince kids to be more responsible in their choices? I do.), and birth control. If most parents would tell their children about sex, this really would have never become an issue.

But when the only sex education comes from the schools, I don't think that personal moral views should be included. While stressing abstinance as the only way to be completely safe from STDs and pregnancy, children shouldn't be taught views like that sex should be saved until marriage (as I myself was taught in abstinence only education) or that sex is bad or dirty. I'm not saying that you wish for children to be taught such things, I just wanted to make clear that I think they shouldn't.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 19, 2006 2:50 pm

You could say I did have a sixth time with sex ed, but I don't count it because of the way it was taught. During human biology class in my high school (a christian school mind you...) our science teacher gave us a lecture about human reproduction, when human development and life begins, counciling on STDs, what they are, how they work, what dangers they risk. The book was written for christian schools so i was actualy surprised how detailed it was. I also beleived christian schools to be paranoid about the subject.

Not quite, to state such a thing would be arrogant if there was no provokation of the comment. However if a person was to say "I'm doing better than you are." and then you were to say "No, I know my material better and I will do better than you." is not arrogant. If they were to say "Even if you studied it as much as me, I would still do better than you." would also be arrogant. However to say that you would do better than a person in something you are more studied than them in, in response to them asserting that they are doing better than you are, is not arrogant.

I never claimed that I was better than him, I said that I was better than him in a certain area. There's a difference. If a student challenges a teacher in their subject and the teacher said the same thing it would once again, not be arrogant. It would be asserting confidence, because the teacher knows that they know more about the subject than the student.
