"--ended up in Council custody and are nothing more than the CEE's lapdogs at this point," Thor finished with a snort of disdain. "Disgusting, really. I would've fought more." He paused to finish the last line of calculations and set down the marker at last, stepping away from the board. "Perhaps we should capture them and bring them back to headquarters. Let the First Unit deal with them."

Tyme immediately came forward and picked up the marker, scanning over the board for mistakes. "And grant them an easy death? That doesn't sound like you, Thor. Let them suffer with the rest. Dying with Council trash - a perfect end for the scum that survived that sorry excuse of a unit." They erased a few numbers and wrote in new ones before returning to scanning the board with intent eyes.

"Mm," Thor agreed, watching Tyme work. "But as I was saying, it's difficult to gather information on. I doubt most of the students even know it exists, and the ones that do aren't talking." He reached out and grabbed Tyme's wrist to prevent them from erasing a number. "I said account for the missing pieces, not the ones we already have."

"For god's sake, Thor, get to the point. And I know what I'm doing," Tyme snapped, shaking Thor free, but they didn't erase the number they were going to. Instead, they erased a number next to it and wrote in a new symbol. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Tyme froze and looked at Thor. "Impossible," they whispered. "You can't get pure taint without extracting it, unless... oh, gods no, you aren't saying..."

Tyme nodded. "The hardiest of test subjects could only survive sixty-three percent coverage and conversion. Appendages began to wear away after that, as did the subjects' mental states." Their brow furrowed. "I had to kill the ones that became violent. Subject 38 threw me through an observation window." They looked up at Thor and set down the marker. "But you're suggesting something else. You're suggesting... no. One hundred percent?"

"Coverage and conversion," Thor confirmed, nodding. "That's the only explanation I can come up with that makes the whole story make sense. I'll need to do further investigation, of course, but if it's true then the vial might just exist, and if it does, Leah or I will find it." He checked his watch. "I need to go. There will be dinner in an hour and it will look suspicious if I am not there. Fill Gisa in for me when she gets back."
Before Tyme could say another word, Thor swept out of the room, and out of the building.

Tyme stood there, watching the open doorway, for a long time. And then they too left the room, snapping the lights off and locking the door behind them.
One hundred percent coverage and conversion. No wonder Ezrael's team had such a miserable failure. Tyme had never heard of someone making it to that state in one piece, physically or otherwise. It had to have been because of Lara; that powerful elf knew things. Old things. Tyme had heard of her, how terrifying she was when she truly wanted to be.
And now she was dead because she had had a bit of guilt about dragging an innocent into Pact business. What a stupid woman.
"No wonder that team fell apart," Tyme muttered as they let themselves into 412. "Far too much compassion for their own good."

Gisa was staring at a particular spot on the table with unusual intensity. She had made a circle out of string and an X in the center from tape. "Come on," she murmured, glancing at the time. "What the hell is taking so long?"
