you ARE pro choice, what are you talking about?

and we're only bashing this one reject for being so brash. you put something this blatant and stupid out there, someone is going to pick up on it.

I'm not pro-choice, I'm on the fence. It's stuff like this childishness that makes me want to stay there. Whoever made up that signiature image feels very emotional about pro-lifers calling her this, that and the next thing for doing what she believes is her right, and the best decision for her, and all you people can do is point and laugh at it.

Same thing happens in the pro-choice guild with foetuses. They happily treat the subject like nothing; 'It's a clump of cells' etc. and I only think 'That's disgusting. They deserve respect'.

When you've been in a position to consider an abortion, and you've had someone in your face trying to sway your decision, you come back and say they're being too rash, because I for one can't blame them for being that way.

If a pro-lifer had made a similar signiature about pro-choicers having a go at her, would you find it so funny? Oh, wait, no, you don't see 'choicers trying to persuade people to have abortions, do you? (I'm not talking about abortionists, I'm talking about people like us).

Try seeing it from someone else's point of view. As I said, I'm not pro-choice - I'm on the fence - but I can see where the 'choicers are coming from, even if I don't agree with them.

She has a point, but besides that signature, they sure do have a lot of this 'emotional outpouring' going on...

stare And I thought the Pro-Choice side were bad with bashing foetuses for a laugh.
We're not bashing anyone, certainly not for a laugh, we are criticizing a signature that paints an unflattering and downright wrong image of Pro-Lifers in general. If, in the process, we have a few laughs, who are you to judge? But, in fact, the first few posts were outrage and anger, and the joking posts were there to lighten up the mood.

Also, I fail to see the comparison of bashing fetuses in general, innocent beings that cannot defend themselves from criticism and have done nothing to deserve it, to "bashing" a single Pro-Choicer on specific issues s/he brought up in a banner that is bashing us.

In fact, let's do a structured critique:

Quote:
(Big)Tell her. You know you want to.(/big)

Right here we see the first problem. The image is, albeit in an obviously sarcastic way, implying that the following -is- how all Pro-Lifers feel about women.

Quote:
Sure, call her a (red)WHORE(/red).

The creator is assuming that Pro-Lifers think of women who get abortions as whores. True, some do. Some would call a woman who's gotten an abortion a whore. However, the Pro-Life movement as a whole does not deserve to be lumped in with these immature name callers. We prefer to use the term "Prostitute."

But seriously, I do not look down on women who have abortions as "whores" or "sluts" or even as murderers. Because, even though I do believe they have committed a "crime" which is equivalent to murder, they do not know what they are doing, so I forgive them. More than anything else, I feel pity for them, because they have done a horrible thing and don't even know it. And someday it might hit them just what a horrible thing they've done. (Whether they want my pity or not is irrelevant.)

Quote:
Tell her that you trust her to get into debt with her credit cards but not with her (green)UTERUS(/green).
...What? What does trust have to do with getting into debt? I trust that everyone has the capability of getting into debt. Hell, I have the capability, if not the will. Beyond this, however, I trust every woman with her uterus. Which is why I trust them to protect the sancity of their uteruses (Uterii?), by not painting the walls with the blood of innocents.

Assuming, however, that they are saying that a woman who remains pregnant against her will will rack up bills because of the kid, first of all, she did

A grammatical critique: The phrasing makes it sound like the writer is saying "You trust her to get into debt with her credit cards, but not to get into debt with her uterus." Which sounds kind of stupid, as the only way she would conceivably (No pun intended) get into debt with her uterus would be by having and raising a kid.

And seriously, why the hell is "UTERUS" green? Every other accented word is red! Of course, given that the uterus is where the fetus is, and abortion providers charge money... But that only makes sense if a Pro-Lifer had done it.

Quote:
Tell her that, because of one night, she deserves a (red)LIFETIME(/red) of raising a child she doesn't want.

This implies that the Pro-Life position is "You made the bed now lay in it," or, more appropriately, "If you do the crime, do the time." We do. Not. See. Pregnancy. As. Punishment. At least not most of us. We believe that the fetus is a human being deserving his or her right to life as much as the rest of us do. We do use the argument of, "Well you chose to have sex," but it is not our base argument; It's more a counter of the ridiculous implications by many Pro-Choicers that they did nothing to place the child there. Obviously they don't mean exactly that, but many Pro-Choicers seem to say, "I did everything I could to keep this from happening, so I am not responsible for it."

Look, in the real world, if you do everything you can to keep something from happening but it still happens? That doesn't absolve you of responsibility. And you sure as hell can't just kill it and move on. I'm trying to think of a good example, but there really isn't a real-world example to compare to pregnancy.

Quote:
Or maybe just nine months of (red)DISCRIMINATION(/red) and risk of (red)MURDER(/red) is enough for you.
Discrimination, I understand. However, as a Pro-Lifer, I want to work at eliminating discrimination of pregnant women. And, in fact, it seems to me that it is more anti-choice to say, "Abortion should be legal because pregnant women are discriminated! Women have to have an abortion so that men will respect them in the workplace!" As Kate has said, it's ridiculous that women should have to have surgery to make them equal to men.

For the second part, I had not heard that pregnant women were more susceptible to murder. Where is that coming from?

Another grammar nit-pick: Everyone has a risk of murder, and everyone is discriminated against by someone. Perhaps they should say -increased- discrimination and risk of murder?

Quote:
It's still more than she wants.

...Huh? This sentence doesn't even make sense to me. What is more than she wants? Increased risk of murder? Really? She didn't want that? It seems like the whole thing makes more sense without this sentence.

Quote:
But who cares? It's not like she was (red)RAPED(/red), or forgot that taking the pill with certain medicines makes it fail, or the (red)CONDOMS(/red) broke.

A) Rape accounts for only a tiny percentage of abortions. And regardless of that, as I said, pregnancy is not a punishment for sex. Abortion is wrong because the child is a -child,- not because their mother had sex.

B) So the child should die because the mother was stupid/forgetful/lazy, and didn't bother to read up on the drug they are taking?

I'm watching Scrubs right now which made me wonder; Would this argument work for a doctor? "Oh, I forgot that aspirin kills people with asthma. My bad! I'm not responsible for that."

C) Why is condoms plural? Are multiple condoms being used? I thought that increased the chance of ripping one. Maybe I'm confused. But either way, again, the child should not be punished because of a slip up or a twist of fate.

Quote:
And she had Plan B, right? That medicine that almost (red)NOBODY(/red) can get their hands on in time because Wal-Mart and other pharmacists (red)REFUSE(/red) to even let women take the perscription elsewhere.

For one thing, I don't believe that Plan B is alright because it can cause a spontaneous abortion. However, I'd rather it be legal than abortion be legal.

Second, the solution should be to make it more accessible, not leave abortion legal.

And it's not a medicine. It's a drug. There's a difference. Medicine heals people. Plan B, whether it kills someone or not, certainly isn't healing anyone.

Lastly, as Zin noted, "prescription" is spelled wrong.

Quote:
But who cares, it's (red)LEGAL(/red), what more do they want?

Also doesn't make sense. Is the writer saying that Plan B is legal, and we think that should be enough? Because personally I think that's too much. And even if it's not, just because the woman doesn't have access to a legal way of preventing pregnancy does not mean that she has the right to KILL HER CHILD. Anyone feel like I'm starting to sound like a broken record? Because I do.

Quote:
And what's $100,000 over 18 years compared to a (red)SCREAMING(/red) ball of "You ******** up, b***h?"

As divine implied brilliantly, what a wonderful way to put having children.

And, again, perhaps we should work more on pregnancy and birth, by young, single, working, student, etc. mothers being an acceptable thing, rather than allowing them to kill and make the problem "go away."

Quote:
Be Pro-Woman. Be Pro-Choice.

And to close it all off, all Pro-Lifers are misogynists. Wonderful. An argument easily countered by the fact that, oh, at least half of the Pro-Lifers I know are women, and I know more Pro-Life men who absolutely respect women in everything than I do Pro-Choice men who absolutely respect women. I mean, to put it to you straight, who do you think is more likely to respect the fact that a woman doesn't want to have sex, and wait for her? By this, I mean as opposed to bothering her about it until she gives in, rather than outright raping her. I'm not saying that all Pro-Choice men are going to be on the one end, and all Pro-Life men on the other, but which side do you think is more likely to be that way? The one where they are okay with you killing anything that is created? Or the one where they believe that life is sacred, and should be protected?

(And I chose "There is no disagree option" just because the phrasing amused me. whee )

Diddo. I've seen what heart felt out pooring looks like. This signature is riddled with sarcasm, hate, ignorance, and idiocy. So, of coarce I'm gogin to laugh at it. Because, I'm not laughing at any one, I'm laughing at the content. Laughing at some ones work is not the same as laughing at them, especialy when some of us have seen this persosn posts and know exactly how well thought out they can actualy be.

A corollary:

Unless I'm mistaken, all drugs that interact with birth control are prescription-only, except for St. John's Wort. (Which I believe should be prescription-only. stare )

This means that if a woman taking hormonal birth control (specifically, a regimen with estradiol) ends up also taking a drug that lessens its efficacy, and was never reminded of this interaction,

1. The prescribing physician failed to inform her, and

2. The pharmacist failed to inform her.

Both put themselves at risk for a malpractice lawsuit.

I've never heard of an occurance, but I can see someone suing for the cost of an abortion if they were not told of the interaction.

If you forget a fact that could change your life something like a week after you were told, well, you need to be on yet another drug because your memory is shot to hell.

So there goes their little argument that women can "forget" that a drug interaction could result in pregnancy. 4laugh

i see it from their viewpoint- it is a woman's body and thus her choicewhat goes in in it. however, they forget the fact that this "it" is a living human who will, if let to grow, will think, feel and love like the rest of us. it deserves a chance at life, at the very least.

the person who owned this signature was quite brash and combatative, acting like an ignorant fool, as has been explained and proven countless timesi n this thread. your acceptence of her ignorant, brash rant is rather disturbing

The Pro-choicers did that in their guild with a signature we made, except there was nothing to debunk because it had a collage of the women in here and said "The Pro-Life Guild: Because our women are hotter than yours" and it got pretty nasty, they even called the women whores (or sluts, don't remember,) like the person who made the signature says we call them. 3nodding I think it's fine to have fun.

also, i would like everyone to know, i can't wait to get married. i hope to have two balls of "you ******** up, b***h", a boy and a girl.

xd This made me smile!

And what places do they discriminate against pregnant women? I don't do that. My teacher's going to have a baby in March so her stomach's showing, she's married but all it is is a small human living in there. ^ ^ Kind of gross when you think about the umbilical cord and the period blood, but when I see a pregnant woman I go "Awwww!" not "YOU NASTY b***h!"

It depends what age you are/how young you look, not really where you are (unless you're in school, THEN you'd probably be dirty-looked right out of the building every day).

A friend of mine was simply taking her baby cousin for a walk in his pushchair, and the number of dirty looks she got was ridiculous. I was that tempted to give the dirty-lookers a piece of my mind, but my friend stopped me, bah.

I didn't see this before! whee That's just wrog, too bad your friend stopped you. If they're young, they're raising a baby, why should they deserve nasty looks?
PostPosted: Sun Feb 18, 2007 4:42 pm

I was seriously told in a debate before that an orange is actually a vegetable. In a rather bitchy way, too. That's where that joke comes from.

Of course, it's rather different if you weren't around. There was a time when every word any of us who had ever posted in the guild uttered anywhere on Gaia was picked apart. Oh right, and we were sluts too (I joined too late to be a slut though, so hahaha, you sluts! You know who you are.... stare ). My favorite thread in the pro-choice guild remains I.Am and Lymelady. I just like being a misogynistic star, I suppose. The point is, everything was taken out of context. A young mother who doesn't post here anymore had her words misquoted to make it sound like she didn't care about her children at all, but she had a sick and twisted love of being pregnant (because anyone who enjoys any element of pregnancy must either be sick and twisted or under the influence of a man! rolleyes ).

The oldbies here know a lot of the people who use signatures like that from way back, and we know exactly what they mean by it. They aren't emotional outlet because we were calling her names. It was because Miranda used a signature that was very feminist while remaining prolife and that offended them, because everyone who is prolife is a misogynist.

If this had been a smear on pro-choicers that painted them in a negative light and thought of them in a worst possible way, saying they liked to kill babies and such, I can guarantee you wouldn't be defending it as an emotional outlet of someone who felt it was true, you would be posting an article about it and going, "It's sick and wrong! They don't really believe in killing babies! stare " Yet, when it's something labeling us misogynists, you defend it and go, "Well that's how they feel!" This might explain why some people see you as pro-choice...you constantly defend the pro-choice side and condemn the pro-life side. What are we supposed to think?

Do you expect us to say, "Oh, well, it's alright if they say we hate women and make a signature with all of these things that are completely untrue, because you know, despite the many times we've debated with her and shown her our side without calling her or any other woman nasty names, she feels this way, and if she wants to tell the whole world this is how we are, well we should lay back and take it like good little submissive Christians!"

I'm sorry. I'm through with the submissive. It got me into a lot of trouble before. Now? I stand up for myself. And if I think that something is pretty damn stupid, given the fact that the sig creator KNOWS that this ISN'T what we think, then hell will freeze over before I lie and say, "Oh it's a masterpiece!" It's ignorant BS and I'm calling it the same way I call it when people on our side make inflamatory statements about them.

Tell her. You know you want to.

Sure, call her a WHORE. Tell her that you trust her to get into debt with her credit cards but not with her UTERUS. Tell her that because of one night she deserves a LIFETIME of raising a child she doesn't want. Or maybe just nine months of increased DISCRIMINATION and increased risk of MURDER is enough for you. It's still more than she wants.

But who cares? It's not like she was RAPED, or she forgot that taking the pill with certain medications makes it fail, or the CONDOMS broke. And she had Plan B, right? The medicine that almost NOBODY can get their hands on because Wal-Mart and other pharmacists REFUSE to even let women take the perscription elsewhere. But who cares, it's LEGAL, what more do they want? And what's $100,000 a year for the next 18 years compared to a SCREAMING ball of 'You ******** up, b***h'?

BE PRO-WOMAN. BE PRO-CHOICE.

Ignoring our views on the subject and trying to make sense of the signiature. Trying to explain what I've interpreted it as. I don't care if we don't agree with her, I want to try and see what she's thinking.

I've heard of plenty of women going for abortions being called whores, because they are tarred with the brush of 'They must have been promiscuous' or 'They can't have been using protection' or even just 'They were having sex without wanting a baby: what a whore'. I'm not saying this is commonplace, but such views do exist. Women who choose abortion have been called plenty worse by people alledgedly on our side. A woman has every choice when it comes to her own money, but not when it comes to deciding when she wants a child (as far as the preventative method of abortion goes). She should not be allowed to make such a decision. Pro-Choicers believe she should be allowed this decision, hence their anger at this; a woman is trusted with money, but not with her body.

Depending on how old the pregnant girl/woman is, or how young she looks, she can be discriminated against. I've known plenty of my friends with younger relatives to be given dirty looks, or even derogatory comments, when they are with their young relatives without any other, older woman, or the child's/children's mother. I'm assuming this is what the writer means about discrimination, because if such discrimination exists for younger people seen with young children or babies, the same can most likely be said for young or young-looking pregnant women. I'm not sure whether discrimination exists for pregnant women in general, but people have been discriminated against for stupider reasons, so personally I wouldn't put it past humanity to stoop to this level.

I'm not sure what the increased risk of murder is referring to. At first I thought it was referring to the pregnant woman herself, but as I haven't heard of many pregnant women going on killing-sprees, I would have to assume that it means there's more chance of the pregnant woman being murdered. Whether this can be proven or not, I don't know, and I'm not sure how to go about investigating such a thing. I suppose this could have been one of the things mentioned to be debunked, but I really don't know.

The writer next refers to Pro-Life (or merely people who refer to themselves as Pro-Life; I'm not 100% sure whether all Pro-Lifers share this sentiment) that rape is not an excuse for abortion, so it's irrelevent. Same goes for whether the woman has used protection, as I have seen many people - who call themselves Pro-Life - state that it's the woman's fault for getting pregnant, and ignore the fact that contraception can fail; pregnancy would not be directly her fault, as such.

Then there's Plan B, which seems to be a touchy subject. As far as I can tell, since I haven't heard the term in the UK so much, it's a pill taken to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus, reducing sperm viability and penetration (actually, now that I've described it, I don't see what the fuss is about, since it seems to merely stop sperm, but I digress). From what I have read, Plan B is a preventative that does not seem to be based on harming an already-fertilised egg, although I may have misunderstood the information - so if anyone wants to correct me, feel free (as in all of this little essay). Anyway, although this is a contraceptive and would prevent any unwanted preganncy, it's not easily available and anyone not desiring to become pregnant have no easy access. Even so, if these people become pregnant, they can be told the same as above; that it's their own fault, that they're [insert derogative here], and that they should suck up and deal with the consequences, even though they tried their best to prevent such consequences.

I can only assume that the price over 18 years is referring to the cost of raising a child. They are weighing this up against an apparently hypothetical situation of the afer-effects of an abortion; someone telling them that they have made a grave mistake, or perhaps a gut feeling of having made a mistake, or a combination of the two. Maybe they just liked the phrase 'screaming ball of' and wanted to use it somewhere.

Well, that's what I was thinking when I read the signiature. I can understand where they're coming from, although they could have put it in a less hysterical way (I don't quite understand the reason for capitalising certain words much, other than to present them as main points and/or to make it stand out instead of looking like a block of text).

I respect your thoughts, but I disagree considering the time that sig came out and who made it. I understand exactly where they're coming from. It's not like I was born pro-life, or I live in a bubble that consists of church and my pro-life friends. Heck, my family is for the most part pro-choice. I'd never be able to tell them my career plans. But the person who made this KNEW that's not what all pro-life people think, and by saying, "Be pro-woman. Be pro-choice," it is lumping us all together as people who are anti-woman.

Also, big misconception about Plan B is that it only prevents fertilization. If you believe life should be protected from conception, it's as bad as abortion. If not, no problem. It's not an abortion because it prevents pregnancy, but, if it fails to keep conception from happening, it prevents pregnancy by making it so the uterus lining thins...basically induces a period...thus making implantation almost impossible. I say almost because it doesn't always work.

If you believe life should be protected from conception, then EC rids the body of conceived humans and therefore is as bad as abortion. If you believe life should be protected later on, then EC rids the body of conceived humans but not human beings so it's all good...or else you don't know that EC functions in a way that makes a uterus inhospitable to a blastocyst.

Anyway, that's what people get upset over with Plan B. It's a form of EC that does prevent implantation of an already developing human.

P.S. Lorysa: We weren't saints either, but yeah. It wasn't such a fun time. I think that thread still exists somewhere, but I'm exhausted from the flight so I won't go look it up. I like being healthy.
