I'm so glad things went well for you! It's good to have someone to share the weight of your identity with.
You're making perfect sense. Oftentimes, we will limit our own wishes and desires based on what we think society wants from us. It's a natural inclination to fit in as a social animal. Since you have always been aware that dating a guy would cause complications with the social order you live in, you have naturally avoided that, whether or not it was your true wish to do so, and since you've never explored that aspect of yourself, you don't know how deep it goes.
I used to have the same problem with my spirituality. I've always been a Pagan at heart, but it wasn't until I moved out of the bible belt that I realized that.
