Maya regarded the woman with the notebook. "You're right. While I will teach you the seals and process for the following spells, you cannot use them if you haven’t yet opened the first Gate, huh? Well, it would be a bit hard to open the Gate right now, but if you want to open it after this demonstration, come talk to me about it, and I’ll help you with that. You’ll have to make the journey to a shrine on the outskirts of the city, but since I’ll be accompanying you, it won’t be too hard," Maya explained with the rare sort of patience she only showed when teaching magic.

"Anyway, so… I’m going to start with the elemental magic of the first Gate. This is pretty simple stuff and doesn’t take much, so you shouldn’t fail too spectacularly at this.

Okay, first I have to prepare the objects. Give me a moment… Manu, Call Flora." A small number of vines suddenly broke through the pavement in front of her feet, small blue flowers unfurling at their tips. " Manu, Dehydrate." Instantly, the plants shriveled up into dry husks. "Manu, Ignite." As Maya spoke the last syllable, the dead plants suddenly flared up in flames.

"You’ve got a fire going, now! The spell I’m going to show you is “Douse”—it’s a water elemental spell that’s handy for putting out small fires. All it does is create a limited amount of water in the air, which you can manipulate for a short amount of time and throw onto the fire."

"Okay, so you have to draw the seal." She turned back to the materials at the base of the statue and picked up a piece of paper and stick of chalk. "Make the strokes bold and confident. If they’re chicken scratch, the seal won’t work," she explained as she flattened the paper and made brisk lines on it with the chalk.



"Then, you concentrate on the seal, focus all your energy on it, and say, “Manu, Douse.” A ball of water formed in the air in front of Maya, and she regarded it with a pleased smile. "Okay, so you gotta throw it onto the fire quickly before it--" Maya cut off, jumping back as the water suddenly splashed to the ground.

"… Right, so that’s what happens when you don’t use it immediately." Maya took another sheet of paper and quickly drew another seal. "Manu, Douse." The ball of water formed again, but this time it splashed onto the fire and put it out.

"Well there you have it, huh? That was a water elemental spell from the first Gate. Any questions? I'll move onto the other three elements, and then finish up with a simple animation spell."

Nonia glanced around her, frowning deeply at the woman with paper and then at her boyfriend for good measure. Stupid prepared people. She ran her hands along her person, a casual sort of search for a pen or paper, both of which she appeared not to have brought along.

Well.

"You better be paying attention to this all, kiddo."

Ceasar offered his guardian a look of distain. Of course, he was paying attention! Someone had almost gotten drenched. This was interesting.

"Ahh," Tobias breathed, expressing his amazement. "Do you use this for showers? I think it would save a lot of time!"

He turned towards Vira and nodded. "I guess that makes sense. I wonder where money comes from. You find rocks on the ground all the time but never money!”

"Oh, not much of a magic user yourself, eh? Well, I'm brand new to it too. I'm thinking about going with the lady to open my first gate this afternooon, perhaps you'd like to come too?"

Nayell smiled at Jafar politely.

"Besides, the more the merrier..."

Maya:

"The next spell I'm going to demonstrate is a wind-type spell," Maya explained, flipped the paper with the fire seal over, and drew the next seal with elegant, flowing lines.



"Just say, "Manu, Breeze", and voila..." At first, a nearly intangible air current stirred a lock of the woman's hair, but it quickly picked up into a strong gust of wind. Maya raised an arm to shield her eyes from the kicked-up dust, but the wind quickly died down back into nothing. "Well, it's name is kind of misleadingly mild, huh?" Maya snorted.

Maya glanced down at Tobias, "Well, I guess it can seem pretty hard to remember the seals when you're just starting out, huh? But you get used to it." She smirked. "The connection between you and the seal you want to use is something special and intangible, and it gets to the point that you can recall any seal you need, whenever you need it. Magic in Edonisu runs deep and is often inexplicable, you know, even to a High Mage like me." Maya laughed and shook her head self-depreciatingly before continuing.

"Well, here's the last elemental spell. It's an earth type, and what it does is extract valuable minerals or objects from a clump of dirt," Maya laughed. "It might not seem very useful, but people who will be doing alchemy or smithing will find this spell very useful when looking for materials for their creations."

"But before I demonstrate the spell, we need some dirt, huh? Daara, Create Earth." There was an invisible disturbance in the air as energy gathered at Maya's feet, soil and rocks manifesting suddenly out of thin air. Maya took a fresh sheet of paper from the pile and kneeled down to draw the seal.



"Manu, Purify Earth," she said calmly, and the pile of dirt at her feet began slowly seperating into two. "This half is all valuable minerals--" Maya pointed at the one on the left. "--While this one is useless dirt," she said, pointing to the one on the right.

Maya:

"Vira, dirt is useless. Well, unless you're planting something, but why do you need that kind of hassle when you can just summon your plants?" Maya raised her eyebrow.

"Anyway..." Maya hummed under her breath, looking at the gathered people. "You guys look pretty bored, huh? I guess I'll finish up with this one and then give you guys the application for the magic guild, for whoever wants to join."

"Daara, Create Earth," Maya said once more, and a medium-sized rock manifested a few metres away. "This spell is an animation spell, and what it does is attract an object to you from a fair distance. You can't use it unless the object it in your vision, however." She took the last blank sheet of paper from the pile and drew the seal.



"Manu, Attract Object," she spoke. The rock twitched slightly before rocketing towards Maya, right into her outstretched hand. "Pretty cool, huh? Be careful not to get hit in the face when you call something, though."

"Well, that's it for the spells. Here are the forms and a few pens. Whoever is interested in joining the magic guild, just fill them out and hand them in to me," the woman explained, picking up a small pile of papers from the base of the statue along with some pens. "Here," she said, holding the items out to the group. "Any of you interested?"
