I guess this could clear my confusing brain somehow. xd I've been trying to figure out what that meant too, & I was guessing Tachi was the dominant one & Neko was the submissive one.
Ah, either way, I still see myself as a neko. X3

Seiko Kaze kageling Well, if you read the stuff that Erehar provided, that states that "tachi" and "neko" are used for more than just shoujo-ai relationships--they apply to shounen-ai relationships, as well. That suggests that it's not the "butch" and "femme" look, although it could still be.
Tachi= (Meaning Top) The more dominant role in a homosexual relationship. Can also be used to refer to a 'butch'.
Neko= (Meaning Bottom) The more submissive role in a homosexual relationship. Can also refer to a 'lipstick lesbian'.
Hm... I dunno what are the English terms for gay guys who are more girly or masculine, or else I would've added them in as well.

Wow... so that means I'm a neko too by your definition. sweatdrop xd Though I looked the terms up online and all state that the term does indeed mean the more 'dominant' person in the relationship. Nothing about the appearances of a neko or tachi. The only difference I really found was that one site said that Tachi was a term used for the dominant male in a gay relationship. >__o
*is confused now* @___o; That DOES make more sense, though. After all, a 'seme' is definitely the dominant male part of a male/male relationship and an 'uke' is definitely the submissive part. It has nothing to do with their looks... (after all, Eri Yuki from Gravitation has REALLY feminine eyes!) I read on a Gay/Lesbian Support website that the correct terms are for the dominence/submissive aspects of the relationship too. I'll see if I can list the source. heart

So how does this all explain titles like 'Revolutionary Girl Utena'? Utena is, indeed, a Tachi, but she is neither more or less dominant that Anthy, who is a Neko.

But, Utena is tomboyish without being butch. At all. She's still a pretty girly girl, for all her boy's uniform, a**-kicking, sword-wielding antics. The difference is that her personality and tomboyish directness makes people view her as the more dominant person in the relationship, even if she's not (relative to her "partner").
Anthy likewise displays a very submissive personality, even though she also holds no actual submissive role in their relationship. Think about the synonymous "seme" and "uke" terms in yaoi--the one who's more submissive, even if he's fairly masculine (Edward Elric) becomes the "uke" in a relationship (let's say Roy x Ed) because he's more likely to be submissive. It doesn't have anything to do with his masculinity/femininity. Despite the longish hair, he's as male as you get.
