Scarlett nodded at Pele and put the hairpin underneath the quill pen, created a sort of triangle. It wasn't a really good still life, but it would work. There weren't a lot of colors either, that was okay. Then she looked at Averill, and then at the paints. The first moment the opportunity rose, she was throwing those in the trash. She could always pay Averill back later. There were perks to having a credit card, after all.
Scarlett distributed paper and pencils to Pele and Averill, and then sat down. She drew something real quick in her sketchbook and held it up: a rough doodle of Pele, Averill and herself sitting around the table drawing. Chibi-Pele's sketchbook showed a doodle of the candle-quill-hairpin set up. She really hoped they understood, she didn't really want to talk around them just yet.

Averill Hammershod Averill nodded. Scarletts instructional diagram seemed pretty clear to him. He put his head down and tried to paint, but found he wasn't being accurate, so he kept looking up to double check. It was annoyingly slow. At one stage, he tried to just keep looking at the still life and paint without looking closely at what he was doing. He felt it worked really well, until he looked down and saw that the shapes were all over the place. From that point on, he couldn't remember which grey or black blob was which, and the painting kinda into unrecognizable disrepair. He sat there, making a scrunchyface of annoyance and looking between his painting and the still life that had been set up. His work was representative at best. "I dont get it. I mean, its essentially like we're doing a diagram, right?" He exclaimed to nobody in particular. "Except without lines, and not using pencils, and with more focus on colours... and... hm...probably trying to paint those candles as unpacked flat shapes over to the right was a bad idea..." His adherence to engineering drawing traditions had meant he'd tried to do a bunch of different views of the same collection of objects, which just ended up looking like strangely shaped cream and grey and black blobs off to the side of the main three-quarters view. Wind of Knowledge We could make it stay >:L Siyaahi I bet Gage is a little....rusty... at sports xD

With most of the color theory tucked into Pele's brain, she went about dragging over warm colors. She didn't seem too worried about the mess of red and brown that was slowly gathering onto her paper; just hummed the tune of some dwarven folksong underneath her breath and moved the brush around.
It seemed that every time the mess of paint on Pele's paper began to actually look like something, she changed her mind and painted something else. It went from an explosion to a fire back to an explosion again, and had somewhere along the way become an erupting volcano.
She continued painting as Averill spoke, setting down her brush after she had finished a particular nasty stroke of gray. The paper had become heavy with paint, and while there seemed to be no sense of order to how Pele was doing things the volcano was actually looking pretty alright.
Pele leaned over to peek at what Averill was doing. "Looks like a buncha blobs," She commented. Her face broke out into a grin.
"Neat!"

Averill Hammershod Averill laughed awkwardly at Peles comment, and nodded, scratching a blonde sideburn. He put his paintbrush down, deciding he was done with his painting. There was no way doing more things to it could make it better, in his mind- additions seemed to only make it more abstract. "Heh, yeaaah, it kinda IS a buncha blobs." He agreed, and peered over at her work. "Hey! Waita minute-" He looked up at the still life setup and down at the volcano. "Thats not anything like what we're looking at either!" He exclaimed, grinning. Even though it wasn't what was prescribed, it looked a lot more fun- the paint thickness practically turned it into a 3D image. He was tempted to poke it, to feel the texture, but that was probably not the polite thing to do to other peoples paintings. "Did you paint that from your mind?" He asked Pele, clearly impressed. Siyaahi You could say I really grind your gears

With the other two situated, Scarlett sat down and started to sketch. The rough sketch was done in a few minutes; at this point it was only too easy for her. She started painting, absently mixing her paint to make just the right colors for highlights and shadows. It was pretty easy with the stuff in front of her, but it was too... dull, so she substituted a few colors.
She had just finished painting the second candle a vibrant orange when Averill began to mutter. Deciding that her own art could wait, Scarlett got up to look over the shoulders of Averill and Pele to see how they were doing. Averill had come up with something... interesting, to say the least. Pele had ignored the still life completely, it seemed, and done her own thing. There wasn't anything wrong with that, of course, but if Pele had never intended to follow the still life then Scarlett wondered why she'd set it up in the first place. The biggest issue she had with Pele's art was how thick she'd laid on the paint; if she wasn't too careful it wouldn't dry properly.
Actually, Scarlett had her doubts that it would dry properly at this point anyway. Unsure of what else to do, Scarlett just gave them both a nod and sat down to finish her own painting. It would be good practice for the massive canvas she was working on in the Lucian dorms...

Pele smiled proudly at Averill's comment, laying on another swipe of red paint onto the paper. "Yup, straight from memory!" She affirmed, edging the brush into the brown so her next swipe included the color.
"Might as well have fun if we're going to be painting, right?" Pele glanced down at the paper in front of her, and stuck her finger into the paint. A thick glob stuck onto her skin, and she smiled at it a bit.

Averill Hammershod As Scarlett didn't say anything, Averill didn't say anything in response. She just looked and probably silently judged, so it was easier to pretend it wasn't happening. "Is that a volcano near your home? Or is it your home?" He inquired about Peles painting. He thought volcano-cities were pretty awesome, though he'd never seen or been to one. The closest he'd come to actual molten rock was the smelters, and that was hardly natural at all. The only naturally heated rocks he encountered were some of the slowly-cooling lumps of granite which heated some tunnels in New Zealand undermountains. When she poked her painting Averill was super surprised, and shot a quick cautious glance at their silent art 'tutor' to see if she had a reaction. "Aren't you supposed to use a paintbrush though?"Wind of Knowledge ((So do you guys want to end scene in the next 3 posts?))

Averill Hammershod It seemed as though the reactions of the other two girls took months to eventuate. Averill scratched his sideburns nervously- the actual complete silence was weird, from Pele, at least. His eyes darted between the two girls and he stepped back over to his own painting. Have I done something wrong? He wondered, and decided that if it was something completely taboo they would have at least yelled at him. Perhaps the muffling spell is acting up..."Well, uh, thanks for letting us use your paints Scarlett. Cool picture Pele." He summarized, giving each of them a polite nod and a smile "I've got study to do, so I'll be going now."He rolled up his painting, while it was still wet, and there was a slight squishing of paint. None oozed out the edges, because he hadn't painted thickly or close enough for the edges for that to happen. The awkward half-dwarf shoved the piece of paper back into his bag and was out the door in the next three seconds, leaving the two girls there together. ((End scene, I guess.
