Kauro looked back up at him. Here was a look of confusion on his face. "Our...?" He fell silent for a moment as he thought. This had become another issue for him. At times even thoughts would slip away in a matter of seconds. "I do... I remember THAT promise for one reason or another. It seems sad though because even if I did remember then such things are forbidden. Not only because I am a prince but also because I am a man. And yet in my own eyes I am not much of a man either. I can give children. My weak body will not permit it. It is for that reason that I have yet to marry. Just think of it. A king who will have no heirs. If I became king our family line would end there." ((Sorry I took so long to post. I didn't get the notice that there was a reply and have been a bit busy with work and school. College sucks.))

Coric blinked, noticing the far-off look Kauro had for a few moments. Huh ... wouldn't be that easy, huh? Well ... that was okay (he told himself), this just gave him a chance to become the prince's friend all over again. While trying to meet the captain's standards and become a knight. Not to mention visit his parents every so often. And training. He couldn't get far without good old sweat and maybe even a little blood. Perhaps ... it would be a bit hard to do all of that ... But that didn't mean he wouldn't try!
Putting on a small but real smile, Coric then blinked. "You can't?" But ... it wasn't like there were any other heirs. Were there? He would have to ask around later, it would be rude to give Kauro the third degree right now. "Ah, but never mind. You're a man alright, even if you can't. Besides, even with a weak body and bad memory, you can still have a good mind and sound judgment. There's no reason to give yourself so little credit; if I didn't remember much I'd be no good for anything," Coric laughed, trying to lighten the mood a bit. "Ya see, I'm kinda as thick as a brick, if you know what I mean. The only thing I'm any good for is ... well, hopefully will be, to protect you." But the hopeful soldier then looked a little flustered, not sure how Kauro would take that kind of off-hand talking. "Y-You were resting before I came in, right? I don't want to bother you, if you're tired."

Kaoru listened to the other. He couldn't help but smile. No one else really bothered to talk to him in a normal manner. Always with the formalities. "No. If I have nothing to do I always stay in here. I was resting before because I felt as if I had gotten no sleep the night before. Before you came in however I was only reading." Kaoru thought for a moment again and then smiled at the other. "Would you like to see the castle? It will probably look different to you now because a lot of things have been replace and added."

Coric smiled back, nodding with enthusiasm. "Sure! If you say you're up for it, I'd loved to be shown around." He offered a hand to help the prince hop out of bed, not even thinking about it. As a kid, he'd kinda liked playing the 'gallant knight' a bit, even if he'd still largely talked and acted like Kaoru was a normal person.

Kaoru smiled at the other and allowed him to take his hand. He stood slowly and then walked out of the room with his forgotten friend behind him. "We'll go outside first. I feel like I need some fresh air anyway." He walked with the other all the way down. They took the same route that Raven had taken to bring Coric up to the prince. Once in the grand hall they attracted the attention of several of the maids. None knew that Coric was given special permission to see Kaoru so it was a suspicious sight. Kaoru paid them no mind however and simply continued on outside with the other.

Following Kaoru like a well-armored shadow, Coric smiled nervously at all the ... looks, he got. But didn't pause, because he didn't want the prince to leave him behind, as the other clearly didn't care at all about the looks the maids gave them. Once outside on the main grounds though ... the redhead looked around with wide eyes ... and a big smile. The first thing he noticed ... "Wow! The bush mage grew into a real and proper hedge maze, huh?" he said conversationally, looking at the massive leafy 'walls' of the maze, hands on his hips.

Kaoru nodded as he gazed at it himself. "A lot of the workers tend to get lost in there from time to time. It is actually much bigger than we planned for it to be." He looked back at the other and smiled gently. You recall when it was smaller though. Did we ever play there?"

"They do, do they? Well, good thing my dad told me a trick for getting out of mazes then," Coric said, before smiling at the question Kaoru asked of him. "Yeah, yeah we did. Only once. And we got into a hell of a lot of trouble for it." Laughing, the redhead looked back at the tall green walls, remembering when they were more child-sized. "You see, I wanted to test out the maze. So, you and I went in ... and promptly got lost. I kept telling you I wasn't lost, even though I'm pretty sure you could tell we were ... but, long story short, we were stuck in the hedges until dinner time. When we eventually found our way out."

Kaoru chuckled having guessed that they would have gotten lost. "That sounds like it had been fun though. I've gone in a few times before. There is a lovely fountain at the center of that maze now. But I have a place that is far lovelier than this maze or even this entire castle. If you... Become my knight... Then I promise I will take you there. Okay? That will be your reward. And... I will grant you any one wish. But you have to become a true royal knight and earn your opportunity to be my guardian." Kaoru looked up at the sky with a smile on his face. If what Coric had said was true then Kaoru wanted him to become his knight. Perhaps if they were together again then he would remember.

Coric grinned, putting his arm around the other. "Well then, I'll just do my best. But I hope you remember this, 'cause I'll definitely become a royal knight; just you wait and see." The redhead looked up as well, but frowned, seeing it was getting pretty dark. He'd have to head back home ... and try to impress the captain in the morning.

"I know. I will remember for sure." Kaoru seemed happy then but suddenly a thought that came to him changed his expression and tone. "But... Please hurry won't you?" There was something he had been made aware of that not too many others knew. Along with his illness there was a possibility of a sudden, unexpected death. But he would speak no word of this to Coric.

Coric's happy grin turned into a more serious look at Kaoru's change in mood. He didn't know why the other wanted him to hurry, but ... "Hey, I've been training for most of my life for this. I'm not going to drag my feet now that I'm in the home stretch." He reached out, lightly stroking the blond's smooth cheek. "You can count on me." Reluctantly, he started walking back towards the castle gates. But tomorrow ... tomorrow, for sure, he would show up bright and early, and ready to face whatever the captain had to throw at him. Tests, training, work, whatever Coric had to do the prove himself.

Kaoru blushed lightly as the other touched his cheek. But he said nothing. He only smiled and watched as the other left. If he is the one, Kaoru thought, then I know he'll fulfill that promise. Kaoru headed back inside seeing as the sun was now setting. It was always such a pain to deal with dinner time since he had to change into an entire new outfit just to eat and then he wasn't sure what would be asked of him.

Riding on his horse, Coric soon returned home. "Mom, Da," he called out, walking inside once he steed was settled in the stable, "I'm home!" Pretty soon he was at the dinner table, recounting what happened (well, the important parts) and his plans to get started tomorrow. With the Queens recommendation, the captain was sure to give him a chance, at least.

Dinner was as Kaoru had imagine. Boring and pointless. All the formalities that is. But he was expected to act like a true prince and so he did and put up with it all until it was time for him to go to bed. He didn't understand why his family was so overprotective. Even his great grandmother who had the same illness was not looked after so much. Then again she also knew well how to protect herself and had the skills to do so. Kaoru couldn't even ride a horse properly. His fighting skills were amateur at best When morning came again Kaoru did not awaken early. He slept for quite some time and no one was allowed to disturb him. The captain was given notice that a young man was going to be arriving to be tested. The queen had already given her recommendation and though he trusted her judgement he was still obligated to do his job and do it well. He wasn't harsh ever. But he was strict and he knew how to spot skill and potential when he saw it.
