The battle is very dependent on learned Gambits... automated commands to give to your other 3 members to follow sorted by priority. I've yet to use them, but I think in the future we'll see many threads asking "What's your ultimate Gambit setup?"... which will be annoying. Anyway, gambits are learned through a License Grid along with skills and other things.
And finally, "Limit Breaks" (they're not really called that) are equipable. I don't know how they work yet.
It sounds like you don't have a lot of control in the battle.

When Square acquired Enix. They just published Grandia III while Game Arts developed it. Grandia II was published by Enix in Japan, and was translated and ported to PC by Ubisoft. And finally, Grandia I was published by SCEA and Ubisoft.
