By, for example, outlawing swastikas- the people they'd be attracting are only those who would be turned away from ideology by something as superficial as imagery. Not people I'd want on my side. Give up too many ideals in order to appeal to the masses, and all you're going to do is weaken yourself from the inside, eventually losing the integrity of the beliefs you started out to support.

That is, shouldn't fascists be more fond of the Roman Empire than the Third Reich?

Same difference, in this matter. Rome symbolized a people united under a largely superficial nationality, a superior culture that civilized the lands it conquered, with organized and powerful armies under a single Emperor, while leaving a vibrant market in place, in order to best exploit the availability of resources created. This seems like something national socialists could appreciate.
