Dawn looked at the technology with caution. "I don't fully agree with those things. The scanners send out waves, collecting the data.. I don't know, it's some of the newer technology. A lot of it hasn't had long term testing and I think the electric waves it sends out affect the Pokemon.. I always feel bad when use my Pokedex..."
She let out a sigh.
"But, as researchers, it's part of our job, isn't it?"
She looked at him with a sudden realization.
"Oh that's right, I didn't tell you, I'm a pokemon researcher. Toby and I were studying Pokemon for a while and decided it was time to have some of our own. I'm still in the researching feild, but Toby's now into Training. We're on our way over to the next town to battle the Gym Leader. Hoping to catch a few new friends along the way." She smiled.

Toby watches closely as Harvey demonstrates the devices. "Hey that's kinda cool. Though personally I prefer studying and relying on this-" Reaching a hand up he taps his temple. "Instead of this." Tapping the pocket which his pokedex pokes out of.
Toby can't help but straighten himself up slightly when his name is mentioned. "That's right, I've been studying training techniques for years and now that I'm finally in the field I'm going to become the best. Isn't that right Shellshock?" Turning to look over his shoulder at the squirtle the two nod at each other. "Squirtle!" Reaching back Toby feels around for the release for the straps. "Hey Shellshock, why don't you get down so they can see you." Unhooking the straps the blue pokemon drops to the ground, his arms and legs popping out of his shell just before landing on all fours. Getting up he walk around Toby's legs, finding himself only a couple strides away from Lavatar. The two catch eyes and begin to size each other up. Looking down Toby chuckles slightly. "Looks like we have a bit of a rivalry starting here.

Harvey glances down at the pair of pokemon, smiling slightly. "Heh, it'll be good for him. He's never had many friends. Let alone a rival." He then turns back to the pair. "Alright, first off, I've personally almost completely disproved the wave radiation myths. You can probably find my theorums in some of the more recent books. It's perfectly harmless! S'like taking a photo. But in 3D." He grins, turning to Toby. "And it's more useful than just that. S'not worth relying on completely, it's still partially experimental... But it's alot easier than carrying a stack of books, a phone, a barometer... You get my point. Hehe." He chuckles a little, smiling at the pair, then stops abruptly. "Oh, right, you said you were heading into town! And here I am slowing you down! Ehehe... Actually..." He smiles halfheartedly. Any chance I could come with? I been on the road a while, and it'd be nice to see a real bed again..."

Shamus gave the Larvitar another skeptical look and then came infront of Dawn. Looking up at her, Dawn couldn't resist picking him up. She held him close and listened to Harvey justifying his technology. She shrugged in response and fed a piece of pokemon food to her Charmander.
When Harvey asks to tag along Dawn smiles and looks at Toby.
"I have no problem with you tagging along. How about you Toby? Oh... We might go off the trail every once and a while though on the way, to look for Pokemon...."
Shamus looked down at Larvitar with a warning look and then snuggled his face affectionately into Dawn.

Toby shrugs a bit as he considers the concept of traveling with the trainer. "Hmmm, I guess it couldn't hurt..." After a moments pause he holds out his hand towards Harvey. "Welcome to the group Harvey."
After a minute or two more of talking Toby broke out his map. "Lets seee here.... We have two options to get to Pewter City. We can either follow the path all the way around as it curves from North to East. Oooor." As he speaks he uses a finger to point out the route he was talking about. Shellshock, now back in his harness, was looking over Toby's shoulder eagerly. "We could try cutting a straight path through the forest. It gets pretty dense but we could probably make it Pewter city by tonight. Plus we have a high chance of finding some pokemon while we're at it." After looking around to make sure everyone had followed along he folds up the map. "I'm all for the forest as long as you guys are. What about you Shellshock?" The Squirtle on his back gives a confident nod before smiling broadly. "Squirtle!"

Dawn and Shamus both looked at the two excitedly. "Forest suits me just fine!"
"Charmander!"
She looked out in the direction of Pewter City.
"I'm thinking I might actually challenge the Gym Leader too, Toby."
She smiled and looked up at the sky. A couple pidgey's flew high overhead into the other trees. She then looked at Harvey. "Well, what do you say?! Ready to go find some more Pokemon?! Oh, Toby! Is there a river or anything in the area??"

"Forest, eh? Works for me. What about you, buddy?" He kneels down next to his rocky friend, who ponders for a moment, then nods agreement. "Larrr. Lar lar." "Heh, awesome. Looks like it's a go then." He gives a thumbs up, smiling excitedly. "So what are we waiting for? Let's get a move on!" He hops to his feet, adjusting his pack, and presses a few buttons on his datapad, issuing another small scan of the surrounding area.

Toby smiles once everyone is in agreement and nods in the direction of the city. "Well then lets be off." Shifting the duffel bag at his side to a more comfortable spot he takes the lead.
The light shade of the forest was a refreshing change from the bright noon time sun. Taking a deep breath he closes his eyes enjoying the soft sounds of the forest around him. Taking a few longer strides he lengthens the gap between himself and the other trainers. Once he's far enough away he turns to talk quietly to Shellshock. "Hey buddy, our first gym is going to be our big debut. And I'll be rock pokemon, right up your isle." The squirtle on his back smiles, a competitive fire in his eyes that is reflected in Toby's. "Squir, squirtle squirtle squir. Squirtle!" "Exactly."

As they continued on through the forest they looked around for pokemon.
They were out there, you could hear them in the distance. Dawn saw a caterpie at one point but it was really high up in the trees and she didn't bother to tell anyone. It wasn't long before she could smell some moist land..an almost swampy smell.
"You guys smell that??"
She walked off to the left, and noticed the soil was much more alive and moist. As she kept going, she noticed a small clearing up ahead, with a bunch of cattails growing in the way.
"It's the pond on the map! Perfect! I wanted a water pokemon!"
She walked along it until the cattails thinned out and it was a bit more rocky. She could hear a few poliwag run into the water.
Finally up ahead on some rocks was a lonely poliwag.
"Ready Shamus?!?"
"Charmander!!"
"Go get him!"
Shamus hurried towards the Pokemon, who instantly dashed into the water. Shamus went to go after him and then stopped suddenly, realizing how much deeper the water was getting.
"Yeah, watch that tail buddy!! Hmm... this is going to be difficult! All the water pokemon are in the middle of the pond.. and I only have a fire pokemon."
Dawn watched as Shamus tried to chase a couple Goldeen who weren't taking any chances. They swam off to the middle too. The only thing that hadn't taken off were a couple Magikarp. Infact, Shamus could walk right up to them, and they'd swim around his toes.
"Hey Shamus... use Scratch on him and get him out of the water!"
Shamus took a big swipe and knocked a Magikarp out of the pond and onto the rocks. It flapped around and didn't bother attacking back. "Shamus, use Scratch again!!!"
The charmander took another few huge scratches at the Magikarp. It looked like it was trying to use splash, but there was no water! It would twist its body up in the air, which only resulted in lightly brushing Shamus' face with it's tail. Then it tried to jump into Shamus, which just looked even more rediculous. "Karp!!... karrrp!"
"Char???" Shamus looked at Dawn with confusion, who was busy trying not to laugh at the situation. "Keep using Scratch buddy, Come on! Let's do this!! It's ours!!!!"
Shamus' face filled with determination as he plunged into his attack and started hacking away at the defensless Magikarp.
"Alright! Hold up! Whoa whoa whoa! Stop!"
Shamus looked back at Dawn.
"Ok, here we go!!!"
Dawn took a Pokeball off her belt, enlarged it, and threw it at the Magikarp. "You're Mine!!!" It sucked the Pokemon in and Giggled back and forth. Then soon after, the red flashing light turned grey, and it was caught. Dawn stood there, shocked for a couple minutes, and then cheered.
"WE DID IT!!! YAY!!!" She ran up, grabbed the Pokeball, and gave Shamus a hug. "Great Job Shamus!! We got him!!!!"
"Charmander!!!!"

Harvey walks into the clearing just in time to see Dawn make her catch. "Hey! A Magikarp! Not too shabby. For a fish." He grins, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Raise it right, and you might get some use out of him. Hehehe." He beams, making his way towards the pond. He kneels at the water's edge, watching the Poliwag swim amid the weeds. "Cute little guys, aren't they? Larvitar, c'mere and take a look!" Until now, the little pokemon had been nonchalantly pacing around the clearing, but jumped at the suggestion. Slowly and cautiously, he makes his way to the water's edge. "Nothing to worry about, buddy. Just a little water."

Toby, being the last one into the clearing rolls his eyes at Harvey congratulates Dawn endlessly. "It was a good catch Dawn, good job to you too Shamus." Looking over at Lavitar he smiles slightly. "You know, not the best idea for a rock pokemon. If he wants a shot at a water pokemon Shellshock and I can flush some out for you." Getting the hint Shellshock undoes the straps and hits the ground running. "Squirtle squir!" It had been a long time since he had been able to swim, making him literally jump at the chance to partake of it again. Diving into the water with a small splash Shellshock begins swimming around, scoping out various pokemon.

At the mention of flushing one out, the Larvitar's eyes bolt open. He runs backwards, sitting behind a small rock. "Hey, it's alright, dude! Ahh, fine, be that way." Harvey sighs sadly, then walks past Larvitar, patting him on the head, then stops at Toby's side. "He's been afraid of water for a while. Had a bit of a... 'mishap' a few months back. Seaking leapt into our boat and knocked him overboard. Took everything I had to get him out." He shakes his head sadly. "Don't blame him, really. Been trying to get him more comfortable with it ever since, but it'll take time." Looking up at him, he smiles. "How long did you say you've had that Squirtle?"

Toby laughs as Lavitar flees from the waters edge and hides. Looking up at Harvey as he approaches he listens intently to the trainer's story. "I can see how that might be traumatizing for a rock type..." Toby frowns for a second before answering Harvey's question, his frown turning into a smile. "Who Shellshock? I've had him for only a week or two now. Dawn and I spent a bit of time preparing for our trip before leaving our town. Been on the road for about half a week now... Say, Shellshock n' I might be able to help you and Lavitar with the whole fear of water. I mean you're going to have to take on water types at some point especially if you wana beat the Cerulean Gym." Toby looks back at the water as his squirtle suddenly rockets out of the water, hanging in the air for a second before diving back in.

Dawn smiled as she was congratulateded and watched Harvey beckon Larvitar to the water. As Toby and him talked, she looked at her newly filled Pokeball with pride. She touched the grey button and released him into the water. The Magikarp faced her in the water looking happy.
"Welcome to the team" Dawn smiled. She took off her hikerboots and socks and rolled her pants up her legs. Stepping into the water, she pet her Magikarp and checked his health over. Looking over at the Larvitar, she saw how terrified he looked when ShellShock shot off into the water.
"See buddy? It's okay... just take your time with it. Shamus get's a little nervous about water too. But if it's shallow he has no problem, right Shamus?"
Shamus was trying to look over the Magikarp's health with Dawn, though he really didn't know what to do, he just pretended to help her. Hearing her words, he looked up happily and then walked over to Larvitar and held out a hand. "Charmander..."
Dawn smiled at the way he tried to help. "It's all on your terms Larvitar. No one's forcing you! But I hope you give it a try...there are so many great things about water..."
She scrubbed her Magikarp and looked at his eyes. "Right?"
"Magikarrrrrrrpp" He said happily.
Dawn looked up at the squirtle swimming around the pond and then looked at Toby. "So, Toby, you catching a water Pokemon while we're here? We should probably head out soon if we're going to make it to the city by sundown. Especially since there's so many other Pokemon I might want to catch around here!"
She looked at the surrounding forest with ambition. "I wonder what we'll find..."

Larvitar looks at Shamus' hand warily, weighing his options. At great length, he takes it, still looking a bit nervous. "Larr... lar lar." Harvey smiles at the pair, turning back to Toby. "It's not really the pokemon he has problems with. Just... bodies of water." He scratches the back of his head absentmindedly. "Won't even go near a boat anymore unless I get him on it while he's asleep. But sure, we could do with a bit of a refresher. Heh. Refresher. Water." He laughs awkwardly at his own little joke. "Alright, I'm sorry, that was lame. Hehe."
