A lot of people tell me they want things made and I say, "Sure, buy the yarn or give me money to buy it," but that never happens. My mom is always asking me to make stuff for her or give her stuff that I made for me (my Ribbed Lace Bolero ended up like that).

I'd like to do commissions one day, and I might, but a lot of people unfamiliar with fiber-arts don't understand why higher grade yarn is so much more expensive than the stuff at Wal-Mart, when less is in the skein.

I've had that problem with people too. It takes a lot of explaining to tell them why they would be better off if they paid even a little more for something of better quality, and then I get this blank look. Sometimes I get through (at least to an extent) but not always. And it irritates me. Grr.

Yes. It's great coming from friends because I see them wear it.
I like their ideas. One wanted a kitty hat and it was a fun experience. I still have the pattern.

Some friends don't want to buy or pay more than 5 bucks on something that takes up 8 hours or so to do. talk2hand A friend wanted me to make her a bag. Sure 20 bucks right? "NO I can crochet, it's not that hard." HAHA go right ahead make the damn bag yourself mad

The rule I usually use with coworkers is for them to purchase the yarn or any pattern necessary, and then I get to keep the pattern and any leftover yarn for myself as 'payment'. Usually the stuff they want isn't too crazy or time consuming, so it seems fair enough to me.

I do agree tho' that some people seem to forget that they're not just paying for the materials, but that there's also someone's time going into it. I mean, just think about if you wanted to charge even minimum wage for the time it takes to knit an average scarf. $20 for a bag then is pretty inexpensive. smile

I get commissioned to make cute monster dolls. Which are made from fabric. I also have been commissioned to make Scarfs. Each time someone sees a gift I make for a friend I get asked to make one for there child. I have been thinking for a while to make stuff for the farmers market or start a web page... First I need to stock up on a bunch of stuff... and not instantly give it away.

One of my coworkers is commissioning me to do a knitted hoodie. What's so special about that? he wants the batman logo on the front, and I'm thinking about doing bat ears and a mask on the hood. ^_^ We'll see how it goes.
