Val smiled "very well. To be honest, I wasn't looking forward to sleeping on a sofa anyway." he said with a laugh. Val crawled into the bed with Ayame and curled up behind her with his arms wrapped around her waist. He kissed the top of her head and whispered "good night Ayame'ka"

Val woke up with Ayame in his arms and couldn't help but smile at how peaceful she looked. He looked out the window and noticed it was still dark out and wondered what woke him when he noticed a small, shadowy, figure standing in the corner watching them with obvious hate in it's glowing white eyes. The figure stepped out into the dim light from the window "you bloody b*****d." the goblin-like creature said, pointing a finger at Val. "I 'ad it all work out. I was gonna be the new lord of darkness, and you 'ad to bugga it all up by quitin'!" it yelled at him. Val lept to his feet and stood between the Darkling and Ayame "Who are you?" Val demanded. " 'Oo am I? I'm nobody now thanks to you!" it took a step closer "The Darkness is gone now, it was destroyed along with me only chance at real power. Now I'm 'ere to KILL YOU!" as it screamed those last two words, it leaped at Val. The Darklings needle sharp teeth sank into Val's shoulder as grappled on to Val

as the beam of light struck the Darkling, it shrieked and fell off Val, clutching it face as smoke tendrils rose from between it's fingers. Val rushed up to the Darkling and pulled a dagger from his belt and slammed it into it's chest up to the hilt and twisted. The Darkling grabbed Val's wrist and sneered at him with it's half melted face. "oh, no. you ain't gettin' rid o' me tha' easy" and jabbed it's claws into Val's wound. The skin around the Darklings fingers suddenly turned pitch back and began to spread from his shoulder. "you'll never go back to the light now Val, the darkness is in yer blood, now an' forever." The darkling cackled until, with a shuddering wheeze, it went limp and slowly disintegrated into nothing. Val fell back with a scream as the shadow-blight spread across his body, burning where the light touched it

Val was gasping for air as the shadow-blight crawled up his neck and over his face. Out of reflex, Val called the shadows to him and covered himself in his mask, trench coat, and gloves. Val looked at Ayame with tears in his eyes are they finally lost their color and went back the the glowing white they were before. "My powers... they're back..." he said in a trembling voice
